Sellery’s own Blue Room Hero rocks Madison

With all of the bands out there to listen to, you might ask: why Blue Room Hero? Well, take it from them — come and listen to their band because their shows are never exactly the same, and they love to make their fans smile. What more could you ask for in a band?

For all of you out there who haven’t heard of Blue Room Hero, here is your chance to learn about a great band and great guys. The members of the band are Jason Napp (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard), Mike Neeb (bass, vocals) and Doug Hill (percussion, cello, vocals). Mike and Jason played together long before college in a little town north of Madison called Westfield. Jason and Mike both went to different colleges their freshman year, but when Jason transferred to Madison from Stevens Point, the band began.

Not only was Sellery voted the best dorm on campus this year; it was also the starting point for Blue Room Hero. Doug moved from Oak Park, Ill., and met his new roommate, Jason. Without Sellery and random roommate placement, this band would never have begun.

Since everyone always wants to know the meaning behind things now, it was only natural to find out where the name came from. According to the guys, when they first started playing together, Mike had to drive up from Milwaukee and the only place they had to practice was in the basement of Sellery: in a bathroom.

Blue Room is a joke about that bathroom. And the Hero comes from the janitor who rescued them from starvation when they once locked themselves inside. Of course, this could all be made up because not only are these guys talented musicians, but they have quite the sense of humor as well.

And what kind of music does Blue Room Hero play? According to Doug, the music has a “Midwest, Sublime feel to it.” Every show that they put on is different from the last, since they have about 30 original songs and manage to cover a few popular favorites as well.

Their first album, which can be purchased at the Den in University Square or at the band’s website, www.blueroomhero.com, is titled Off the Click. It has a great sound to it, and all of the songs are Hero originals.

“Bet Any” is a popular favorite with fans because the lyrics are catchy and the rhythm could force anyone to dance. From the first track to the last, the beats will have any listener tapping his or her foot and trying not to break into instant dance, which the guys say is what makes them keep playing. The fans are the important aspect of the group, and BRH makes music to keep them happy.

If you are looking to catch some great music, come out and hear Blue Room Hero. They will be playing tonight at 10 p.m. with The Debut (a group that is, according to Doug, “a damn good rock ‘n’ roll band!”). The show is at The Corral Room (below the Tornado Club) at 116 S. Hamilton St. If you still can’t get enough of these guys, you can catch them in Oshkosh this weekend at The Lounge (Saturday) and Fratello’s (Sunday), at The Annex on April 24 and then at the Mifflin Street Block Party at a yet-to-be-determined location.

Also, for everyone looking to hear some great music and help raise awareness of AIDS, Blue Room Hero will play a benefit show on April 28 at The Majestic. The show is for ages 18 and over, and for those of you who are legal, the cover is $7 for entry and one free drink and $13 for entry and all-you-can-drink. So, if you are looking for a break from studying and are in the mood to hear some great music, check out Blue Room Hero and The Debut tonight.
