Men’s Golf: The Wisconsin men’s golf team ended the 2002 Big Ten Championship in 11th place after posting a final-round 301 to finish with a 72-hole total of 1203.
Junior Joel Rechlicz led the Badgers with an 8-over 76-71-75-74 — 296 to finish tied for 27th. Freshman Kevin Tassistro carded a final-round 76 to finish at 304 and move into a tie for 45th, while classmate Dylan Esterling finished a shot back at 305 to tie for 47th. Junior Jon Turcott ended in 53rd with a 307.
Freshman Michael Baldwin carded three birdies Sunday en route to the low final round for the Badgers with a 1-over 73 to finish in 54th with a 308.
Minnesota jumped up from third place to capture the team title with an even-par 1152 at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course. The Gophers were the only school to break par during the final round, posting a 3-under 285. Purdue, the leader heading into the final round, posted an 8-over 296 to fall into a tie with Illinois for second at 1157.
Eric Jorgensen of Michigan State ended the tournament with back-to-back 69s to grab the individual title by two shots with an 8-under-par 280. Scott Harrington of Northwestern finished second with a 282 after firing a final-round 6-under 66.
Women’s openweight crew: The Wisconsin women’s openweight crew finished fourth at the Big Ten Rowing Championships for the third consecutive year Saturday.
The Badgers earned 80 points to edge fifth-place Minnesota by two points. Ohio State broke Michigan’s two-year hold on the league title with four race wins and a 138-point performance. Michigan finished second with 124 points, while Michigan State was third with 109 points. Iowa and Indiana took sixth and seventh, respectively.
Wisconsin took one of the six races competed, winning the second novice eight. The No. 1 seed in the event, Wisconsin won by just over five seconds with a time of 7:02.6. Iowa finished second in 7:07.7.
The Badgers were second in the varsity four to Michigan State, the only school other than Wisconsin and Ohio State to win an event. The Spartans clocked a 7:25.9 to nose past Wisconsin, which finished in 7:26.6.
In the premier event, the varsity eight, the Badgers finished second in the petite final and sixth overall in 6:39.9. Ohio State won the grand final of the varsity eight in 6:29.5, while Iowa finished fifth and won the petite final in 6:36.8.
In other races, the Badgers finished third in the novice eight, fourth in the second varsity eight and fifth in the second varsity four.
Men’s Crew: The fifth-ranked Wisconsin varsity eight men’s crew won its fourth Cochrane Cup in five years when it reclaimed the trophy with a win over No. 10 Dartmouth on the Connecticut River, Saturday.
The Badger varsity eight, into a headwind that created challenging conditions, finished in 5:31.6. Dartmouth finished 10 seconds behind with a time of 5:41.9.
The Badgers also won the second varsity eight, clocking a 6:02.2. Wisconsin fell behind at the start of the race, but pulled into the lead at 500 meters. UW then went the distance with the lead to defeat the Big Green. Dartmouth crossed the line in 6:04.1.
Wisconsin also raced its freshman eight crew, against both Dartmouth and MIT. Dartmouth grabbed a boat-length lead by the midpoint of the race and went on for the win in 5:46.7. Wisconsin was second in 5:51.2, with MIT third in 6:10.3.
