“Goodbye 20th Century”
It’s hard to tell if the title of this show reflects a reverence for modern music’s debut century or if it’s merely an ode to good things to come. Station vet JP breaks down all your favorite jazz, no wave and post rock of the past, present and future (girl’s got a nose for what’s next, and with hot contacts to boot). Featured soundscapes: Tortoise, Ken Vandermark, Sun Ra, Mekons, Television, The Sea and Cake.
“The Drive”
DJ Steve Sleeve plays in a local band and likes to support local artists, including himself, on the station’s most versed indie-rock show. All kidding aside, this is one flavor show that delves into the tricky nuances the genre has bred, including occasional flourishes of long-forgotten Twin Cities ensembles. Featured soundscapes: Hüsker Dü, The Stereo, The Shins, Sloan, Ween, Kleenex Girl Wonder, The Replacements.
“PBR”
Dawn and Nicole both bask in the Chicago scene during their summers off and bring Windy City metal/punk to life during their two-year-old show. It is important to note that DJ Dawn Diggidy worked for the UW Telefund and thus knows how to bust some verse under pressure. Frequent guest house DJs make this a show that redefines the term “format.” Featured soundscapes: Bis, Die Mother F*cker Die, Detachment Kit, Sonic Youth.
“Conniption Fit”
Janelle and Vance quarrel like a married couple during their long-running program. Actually, they take turns knocking each other out, which makes for some memorable radio. It’s all good, though, because both know tons about tons and play a tasteful mélange of new wave, synth-punk and screamo. Featured soundscapes: The Faint, Blood Brothers, Pig Destroyer, Suicide.
“Beats, Rhymes and Hype”
Emcees Bard and Finan took the show’s name from a long-running Herald column and ran with it. Combining both underground and mainstream Left Coast acts with a few of those Right Coasters that don?t annoy them too much, the duo likes to think the show helps people a great deal — mostly the people stuck in that herbaceous Ja Rule rut. Featured soundscapes: J-Live, Unspoken Heard, Nappy Roots, Gangstarr, Common Sense, Kurious George, Mobb Deep.
