ST. PAUL, Minn. - Nearly 1,000 protesters are currently marching toward the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, the site of the 2008 Republican National Convention.
Yelling ‘healthcare is a human right, for this I will stand and fight’ while moving down University Ave. toward the arena, the Poor People Economic Rights Campaign are marching for education rights, healthcare for all and troop withdrawal from Iraq.
As the protesters reached the Minnesota State Capitol building, hundreds of additional protesters joined the march toward the Xcel Center.
Police presence is high around the march and have not yet tried to stop the crowds.
On Sept. 1, the first day of the convention, thousands marched through St. Paul in protest. Dozens started violently protesting, causing damage to area businesses. Nearly 300 individuals were arrested on the first day alone.
The RNC made a few last-minute changes before the convention started yesterday in respect of individuals affected by Hurricane Gustav on the Gulf Coast. Changes included the cancellation of appearance from both President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
President Bush is expected to address the convention tonight via satellite.
U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will accept his nomination as the Republican nominee on Thursday.
