MILWAUKEE (AP) — More than 71,000 children and parents in Wisconsin obtained health insurance during a six-week period early this year as the state consolidated and simplified the health programs that provide coverage for low-income families.
The initiative, called BadgerCare Plus, consolidated the state’s Medicaid, Healthy Start and BadgerCare programs for low-income families and simplified enrollment.
The new program also enables families whose children were not eligible for existing state programs to buy health insurance through the state. The cost ranges from $10 to $90.74 a month for each child depending on family income.
The cost is subsidized by the state for children in families with incomes from 200 percent to 300 percent of the federal poverty level.
Enrollment in state health programs now under BadgerCare Plus on Jan. 11 was listed as 483,919, but it increased to 555,373 Feb. 29, the latest figures available.
