The Madison City Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night aimed to protect tenants from being frivolously overcharged by landlords.
Ald. Eli Judge, District 8, proposed the ordinance which passed with complete consent from council members.
Downtown landlords will now be required to show photographic documentation of damages charged to tenants at the end of their lease.
Five University of Wisconsin students spoke directly to the council, urging them to pass the ordinance.
“The photo ordinance strikes at the heart of one of the most important issues the city deals with: tenant rights,” Judge said Monday. “There have been some infringements in those rights.
Both students and property owners have noticed violations. Judge’s father flew in from Illinois to attend the meeting and see his son’s ordinance pass, a very rare occurrence for the city council.
