Madison police are investigating the homicide of a 21-year-old University of Wisconsin student at 517 W. Doty St. Wednesday afternoon.
At a press conference late this afternoon, Dane County Coroner John Stanley identified the victim as Brittany Sue Zimmermann, a junior originally from Marshfield.
Madison Police Chief Noble Wray said there have no information about a suspect at this point, and the killer is still at large.
MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said a 911 call at about 1 p.m. brought police to the scene, where they found the body of the young woman. A full investigation is underway.
DeSpain said police are “asking for anyone who might have seen anybody running through this area around 1:00, someone who might have been in this general proximity, to please call our CrimeStoppers line.”
That line can be reached at 608-266-6014.
DeSpain said police are investigating whether the death is related to a call police received around the same time about an incident on West Washington Ave.
MPD has brought in a mobile command post and blocked off Doty Street between South Bassett and South Bedford streets.
“The nature of this investigation would make us think perhaps we’re dealing with something suspicious,” DeSpain said.
He said no one has been taken into custody related to the incident.
University of Wisconsin fifth-year students Ben Heiser and Ryan Schmidt said they heard violent yelling and noise on the street around midnight last night from their residences at 502 W. Doty. St.
“We didn’t really think anything of it,” Heiser said.
While Wednesday’s incident is still under investigation, City Council President Mike Verveer, District 4, said a UW student has not been murdered on campus since 1996.
