MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson didn’t use Governor Tim Pawlenty’s name when describing the ideal Republican vice presidential candidate.

But he left little doubt that Pawlenty would be on his short list when speaking to a conference on picking vice-presidential candidates at the University of Minnesota.

Thompson said on Monday the presumptive Republican candidate, Senator John McCain, needs a younger running mate. Pawlenty is 47.

Thompson says the three most important states in this year’s election will be Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. Pawlenty is only Republican governor in those states.

Thompson also says McCain’s vice president must appeal to the Republican base. Pawlenty has an anti-tax, anti-abortion and pro-gun rights record.

It’s not the first time that Pawlenty’s name has come up as a potential vice presidential candidate. He’s co-chair of McCain’s national campaign.

Pawlenty has consistently downplayed speculation that he’s seeking higher office.
