Despite heavy snow, howling winds and icy sidewalks, the University of Wisconsin remains open for business Wednesday.
UW did not follow the lead of area school districts, including the Madison Metropolitan School District, that decided to close Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service predicts a storm total of about 8-9 inches with snow continuing through the morning and early afternoon hours.
The university issued a statement Wednesday morning advising students who feel conditions are unsafe to travel in to contact professors about making up missed class. Professors are also asked to remain flexible with the blizzard-like weather conditions outside.
UW rarely shuts down, only doing so on two occasions since 1990. The most recent occurrence was two years ago today, when the university canceled late afternoon and evening classes due to heavy snow and severe weather threatening during rush hour.
