University of Wisconsin campus officials announced Wednesday afternoon the cancellation of all afternoon and evening classes.

Officials said some campus operations will continue including Recreational Sports events and some libraries.
The university also relayed a message from Madison Metro that all buses, including those that serve the campus will discontinue operation at 7 p.m.

UW spokesperson John Lucas said in a statement that all passengers should leave as early as possible to ensure they are able to make the last trips.

“Most buses are currently experiencing a 5-20 minute delay,” Lucas said.

Campus staff was also warned by Lucas in the statement that they should use their discretion regarding safety but would be “required to use accrued holiday, vacation or compensation time to cover any
absences.”

UW rarely shuts down, only doing so on two occasions since 1990. The most recent occurrence was two years ago today, when the university canceled late afternoon and evening classes due to heavy snow and severe weather threatening during rush hour.
