The temperature swing and bitterly cold temperatures Wednesday morning prompted Madison Metropolitan School District officials to close local schools this morning.
While dozens of other school districts shut down due to the cold, University of Wisconsin students are asked to dress warmly and brave the elements, as campus operations remain open and fully running.
UW rarely cancels classes with a winter snowstorm canceling afternoon classes in the winter of 2005.
With temperatures around ten degrees below zero and wind chills about 30 below, a wind chill warning remains in effect throughout the day today.
Some Madison Metro bus routes are running 15 to 30 minutes behind schedule as well.
According to The Capital Times, this is only the second time Madison schools have closed in the past 14 years.
