University of Wisconsin athletics are on the cusp of regular season championships, playoffs and a potential last place finish. Here’s the lowdown for the Badgers this week.
1. Live look-in at the men’s basketball team and the rest of the Big Ten
(The Badgers are DeAndre Jordan and Brandon Knight represents the other 13 Big Ten teams.)
The men’s basketball team continues its hot streak through conference play, winning its last 10 games and doing it by 10 points or more in eight of those contests. Tuesday night against No. 24 Maryland, the Badgers have a chance to clinch at least a share of the regular season Big Ten title for the first time since 2008.
Wisconsin currently has a three-game lead over the three second-place teams (Maryland, Purdue and Michigan State) that are all 10-4 in Big Ten play.
Last week, the Badgers defeated Penn State on the road and Minnesota at home. The Badgers play at Maryland Tuesday and host Michigan State Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the final home game of the season.
2. Farewell seniors
Sunday’s matchup against Michigan State will be Senior Day for the men’s basketball team, and the final time they take the Kohl Center court as Badgers.
Seniors Josh Gasser, Frank Kaminksy, Traevon Jackson and Duje Dukan will be honored for their time with UW.
Gasser, who leads the Badgers for most career starts, joined an exclusive club Saturday after scoring his 1,000th point, becoming just the second Wisconsin player other than Michael Finley to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 250 assists in his career.
3. The Return of Traevon?
Traevon Jackson told reporters Sunday afternoon that he would play Sunday against Michigan State and travel with the team to Maryland. However, a UW official said Jackson has not been cleared to play by the team’s training staff. Jackson also hasn’t practiced yet.
That leads to the question of who will start once Jackson eventually returns. Sophomore Bronson Koening, Jackson’s replacement in the starting lineup, has averaged 7.7 points per game since becoming a starter, and scored a career-high 17 points against Minnesota.
4. Women’s hockey enters postseason play
The Badgers enter the WCHA playoffs as the two-seed and will take on seventh-seeded St. Cloud State in the first-round.
The Huskies and the Badgers came off a series against each other just this past weekend. The Huskies won the first game 2-1, despite the Badgers putting 53 shots on goal, and Wisconsin took the second, winning 5-0.
The Badgers won three of the four matchups against St. Cloud State during the regular season, outscoring the Huskies 13-2. In UW’s three wins, the scoring margin was 12-0.
The best-of-three series starts Friday, Feb. 27 at LaBahn Arena, with the second game the next night. If necessary, the third game would be Sunday. All start times are 7 p.m.
Additionally, head coach Mark Johnson and the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team celebrated the 35th anniversary of their “Miracle on Ice” victory against the USSR Sunday. Johnson scored two goals in the game.
5. Men’s hockey splits series
Wisconsin won the first game of the series 2-1 Friday night at the Kohl Center, behind goals from Chase Drake and Kevin Schulze. It was the first winning-streak for the Badgers this season since they had won last Saturday at Ohio State.
But UW fell 3-0 in the series finale Saturday night.
The team takes to the road for the final two weekends at Michigan and Michigan State before the Big Ten tournament begins March 19.
