Two weeks after taking a temporary leave of absence from the UW men’s basketball team for “unspecified medical reasons,” Michael Flowers returned to practice Wednesday.
The senior guard averaged 7.2 points per game last season and is expected to provide experience in a Wisconsin backcourt that lost guard Kammron Taylor to graduation.
The university’s announcement came Oct. 19 — the day before the team’s annual media day— and no specific reason was offered for the senior’s leave.
Flowers looked healthy and fresh during Wednesday afternoon’s practice, showing no signs of rust from his two-week absence.
“He’s back on the floor,” head coach Bo Ryan said after the practice, unwilling to go in to detail about Flowers’ return. “We practiced. This is all part of what we do.”
Flowers earned Big Ten all-defensive team honors last season, and his return bolsters a backcourt that was expected to start sophomores Jason Bohannon and Trevon Hughes.
It is still unclear to what extent Flowers is back, however. When asked whether Flowers will be able to play in Sunday’s season opening exhibition game against Edgewood College, Ryan again refused to provide much information.
“Anybody that’s out there on the floor should be ready to play,” Ryan said.
