The Badgers headed into the break riding high on the momentum from sweeping Minnesota State and taking Minnesota to the edge in the previous series, losing close in game one and tying in game two despite having the lead on three separate occasions. The team admitted they were ready for a much-needed break after playing in four consecutive physical weekends, including six games on the road.

After resting for the better part of a month, the team returned to action on Jan. 7 for a two-game series against Quinnipiac, who had the unfortunate honor of being the first team to play a rejuvenated Badger team. The Lady Ice Badgers swept and shut-out the Bobcats for the series, winning 7-0 and 4-0 on back-to-back nights.

Though Wisconsin and Quinnipiac had never met before, the Badgers introduced themselves rather rudely, dropping two goals on the Bobcats in the first period. Sophomore Sara Bauer opened up the scoring with a goal at the 9:01 mark on an assist from Carla MacCleod. Bauer then set up teammate Sharon Cole for a power-play goal to cap the first-period scoring.

The Badgers kept their foot on the gas in the second, as junior Cyndy Kenyon and freshman Jinelle Zaugg scored 15 seconds apart in the opening minutes to extend the Wisconsin lead to 4-0. Kenyon caught the rebound of senior captain Molly Engstrom’s slap-shot from the blue line and put it away. On the ensuing face-off, Kenyon hit Zaugg, who neatly slipped the puck past the Bobcat goaltender for the second score.

The Badgers scored three more times in the final period. Senior Amy Vermeulen scored the first of the three goals, her first since joining the team midway through the season following the end of the women’s soccer season. Sophomore Meaghan Mikkelson scored next, and Kenyon closed the scoring with her second goal of the game.

The Badgers then completed the shut-out series with a 4-0 win the second night. The Badgers received goals from Engstrom, freshman Mikka Nordby and junior Nikki Burish, who scored twice. All the goals came in the first period. Nordby’s goal, a slap-shot from the blue line that was deflected by a Bobcat defender, was the rookie’s first as a Badger.
