Coming into this weekend’s Halloween series against St. Cloud State, only three Badgers had accumulated nine or more points in the team’s first six games. Over the weekend, Sara Bauer tallied nine points in just two games.
In what turned out to be two of the most impressive performances of the season on back-to-back nights, Bauer recorded three times as many points as St. Cloud’s entire offense.
Bauer’s entire line went on a tear against St. Cloud, as linemate Sharon Cole posted five assists and Lindsey Macy tallied four goals and an assist on the weekend.
“I think our line was going pretty well this weekend,” Bauer said. “We had a lot of chances together.”
Bauer was all over the ice Friday night, as she was involved in five of Wisconsin’s seven goals. Bauer recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring a goal in each period.
In the first period with the Badgers on the power play, Bauer took a pass from Cyndy Mikkelson on the bench side of the net and put it past Husky goalkeeper Kendall Newell from 15 feet out to score the Badgers’ second goal of the night. On UW’s first goal, Bauer was credited with an assist when Macy scored on a rebound put-back after a shot from Bauer.
Once UW took the early 2-0 lead, Bauer added two goals off rebounds in front of the net. She also assisted on Macy’s second goal of the night, threading a beautiful crossing pass to her sophomore linemate in the second period.
Bauer ended her night with five points, a new career high for the Badger’s most potent offensive weapon.
Bauer did not slow down much in Saturday’s rematch, tallying four points on one goal and three assists. After the Badgers were held to only six shots in the first period, Bauer helped Wisconsin break through in the second. With the Badgers on the power play midway through the second period, Bauer’s shot was blocked by Newell, but a charging Molly Engstrom was able to put the puck away for a goal, giving Bauer her first assist of the night.
On Bauer’s next shift, the Badgers were again on the power play, and this time Bauer lit the lamp herself, scoring her fourth goal of the weekend. The goal was the eventual game-winner for the Badgers, who would only give up one goal on the night. Bauer would go on to assist Macy twice more in the third period to wrap up her weekend with nine points.
Bauer had a hand in nine of Wisconsin’s 14 goals against St. Cloud State, 65 percent of the Badgers’ offensive output. With nine points on the weekend, Bauer also constituted more than a quarter of the Badgers’ point production (34 total points).
Bauer’s play has drawn praise from head coach Mark Johnson.
“(Bauer) is playing well, and she’s capitalizing on a lot of her opportunities,” Johnson said. “I’m glad she’s off to a good start. She had such a good season last year. To come back and perform the way she has is really a credit to her. It’s usually tougher the second time around; people are going to key on her, and obviously, as you go through the season, people start focusing more attention on her.”
