The long ball spelled doom for Loyola University Chicago (21-27) this afternoon as Wisconsin (27-23) walloped a pair of home runs to power itself to a 3-0 victory at Loyola Softball Park. The loss prevented the Ramblers from equaling their season-best winning streak at three games.
The Badgers jumped on the board in the first inning when Boo Gillette crushed a two-run homer to left field. Athena Vasquez got all of a pitch from Loyola starter Lindsey LaChiana in the third inning and deposited it over the fence in right center field to give the Badgers a 3-0 cushion and all the offense they would need on a warm and windy afternoon.
Offensively, Loyola was unable to get much going against Badger starter Eden Brock. Tara Miller led off the bottom of the first with a single, but then the right-handed freshman mowed down 15-straight Ramblers before Sarah Lamkin reached on an error to lead off the sixth inning.
First baseman Allison Scanlin extended her hitting streak to seven games with a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning. She has now hit safely in 22 of her last 24 contests as well.
Loyola heads to Wright State this weekend for a three-game series beginning Saturday, May 1.
