After defeating Iowa (3-13, 0-7) 4-3 Saturday, the UW men’s tennis team (7-10, 2-4) fell 7-0 to No. 31 Minnesota (11-7, 6-1) Sunday.
The Gophers swept all six singles matches and earned the doubles point with a pair of doubles wins in a dominant performance Sunday. The Badgers captured their only win of the day at No. 1 doubles, when the No. 33-ranked duo of senior David Hippee and junior Alex Kasarov downed Minnesota’s Chris Wettengel and Andres Osorio 8-4.
In the No. 2 doubles match, senior Scott Green and freshman Pete Amundson fell 8-3 against Minnesota’s Clay Estes and Aleksy Zharinov. Sophomores Ward Bortz and Mark Weining struggled in the No. 3 doubles match, falling 8-5 to the Gophers’ Duscan Tabak and Sion Wilkins.
The only Badger to win a set in a singles match was Kasarov, who took the first set 6-4 before losing to No. 56 Wettengel 4-6, 6-1 (10-5).
Before losing to Minnesota, the Badgers picked up a win over Iowa Saturday to earn their second conference win of the season.
UW earned the doubles point with victories in all three doubles matches. Wisconsin’s top pair, No. 33 Hippee and Kasarov, took down Iowa’s Sebastian Delgado and Chaitu Malempati 8-5, and the Badgers No. 2 doubles team of Green and Amundson won 8-2 over Iowa’s Walter Valarezo and Jonny Hoak. In the No. 3 match, Bortz and Weinig defeated Iowa’s Aaron Schaechterle and Matis Jasicek, 8-5.
In singles action, Kasarov downed Delgado 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match and Weinig defeated Schaechterle 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 5 match. With his first singles victory at Wisconsin, Amundson won the clincher, taking down Matis Jasicek 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2).
