In the NCAA Indoor Championships, the UW men’s track and field team finished in a tie for 10th place, and the UW women’s track and field team tied for 33rd.
The men’s team recorded 19 points, the highest point total at an NCAA championship meet in school history. Wisconsin’s 10th place finish is the best for the UW men’s team since the Badgers placed 8th in 1979.
“We thought if we had a great meet, we could be top 10,” said UW men’s coach Ed Nuttycombe. “We brought eight individuals (to the meet) and are bringing back seven individuals who earned 10 All-America honors. That pretty much says it all. We’re very pleased.”
The men’s team turned in a strong showing in the 3000 meters with three Badgers scoring points in the race. Junior Matt Tegenkamp, freshman Chris Solinsky and sophomore Simon Bairu all placed in the top 10 in the 3000 meters and earned All-America honors. All three standouts took home their second All-America honor of the meet in the 3000.
On the women’s side, Hilary Edmondson led the way with a 4th-place finish in the mile. With five points in the championships, the Badgers finished 10 spots higher than last season’s 43rd-place finish.
