The Appeals Committee of the University of Wisconsin’s Student-Athlete Discipline Policy decided to modify the Feb. 4 suspension of Wisconsin men’s basketball player Maurice “Boo” Wade for a violation of the athletic department’s conduct code.
Bruce Jones, chair of the Appeals Committee and chair of the institution’s Athletic Board, made the announcement Monday night.
The Appeals Committee heard Wade’s appeal Monday and changed his suspension from an indefinite period of time to two games. Wade did not play in the Badgers’ most recent two games, against Minnesota Feb. 4 and at Northwestern Feb. 7.
According to the committee’s ruling, Wade can return to competition and practice immediately, pending additional information that might lead to a re-evaluation of his situation.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects any additional information regarding disciplinary actions toward a student.
Wade, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., was having a solid sophomore campaign prior to his suspension last week. Through the Badgers’ first 17 games, Wade was averaging 7.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. His 32.1 minutes per game still ranks as the second-most on the team, behind starting point-guard Devin Harris’s 35.5.
In the six conference games he’s played for Wisconsin this season, Wade has increased his scoring average to 8.5 points per game and raised his rebounding average to 3.8 rebounds per game. His playing time in Big Ten play has also increased to 34.3 minutes per contest.
As a true freshman last season, Wade appeared in all 32 of the Badgers’ games and averaged 3.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest.
Wisconsin will be in action again Wednesday, when the team travels to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to square off with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Due to the modification of his suspension, Wade is cleared to participate.
