University of Wisconsin senior hockey captain Brad Winchester will not play in the Michigan Tech series this weekend due to his arrest last Sunday.
According to a statement released Thursday, Winchester “broke team rules” when he allegedly punched a police officer who attempted to restrain him in a fight outside the Kollege Klub early Sunday morning. The statement said Winchester would resume practice on Monday, however.
Coach Mike Eaves said in the statement that the team would support Winchester despite the discipline.
“Brad Winchester is a fine young person, and no one is as disappointed as Brad with the incident of last week,” Eaves said. “Brad will work through this situation, and our hockey team will support him throughout the process.”
Winchester was released from custody Monday through a signature bond, and his preliminary hearing is set for March 11.
