Wisconsin men’s tennis players David Hippee and Alex Kasarov were ranked 29th in the nation this week by the Omni Hotel Collegiate Tennis Rankings and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The two juniors have won their last two matches against Ball State and the University of Louisville and have a 7-1 record this season.

This is Hippee’s third year with the team and Kasarov’s second due to redshirting his freshmen year.

To determine rankings, the ITA uses a formula of wins and losses while factoring the rank of opponents and number of matches.

On the other side of the net, Wisconsin junior Shana McElroy of the women’s tennis team was ranked 97th in the nation this week.

McElroy has won her last five consecutive matches. She is 6-6 in the dual season and 13-12 for the year. McElroy, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., has been with the team since the 1999-2000 season, redshirting her second year due to medical reasons. In less than three seasons, McElroy has tallied over 50 wins with a career record of 60-42.

McElroy has also excelled academically as a two-time academic all-Big Ten and being named to the Dean’s List in the fall of 2001.

Fellow teammates Linde Mues and Katie McGaffigan have also been recognized this season in the national rankings. Mues was tied at 100 in the fall preseason rankings and No. 24 in the Midwest Regional rankings in December.

McElroy and McGaffigan were also named in the Midwest Regional rankings at 13 and 28, respectively.

In doubles, the Mues and McGaffigan duo landed tied at 50 in the fall preseason ranking and ninth on the Midwest Regional list.
