The Badgers (5-9, 1-5 WCHA) entered the second game of their own College Hockey Showcase Saturday night with a 2-16-1 mark in the 10-year history of the Showcase and in the midst of a three-game losing skid. Despite one of the best performances of the year for the Badgers and out-shooting the Spartans 35-26 (16-9 in the third period), MSU (6-6-1, 3-4 CCHA) won the game 2-1 in overtime in front of 11,133 at the Kohl Center.

The first period set the tone for the contest, as each team held the other scoreless the first 20 minutes. The Spartans had the better chances in the first, but UW netminder Scott Kabotoff stopped all nine MSU shots. The Badgers’ best chance was on a breakaway by junior winger Rene Bourque, who hit the post on a wrist shot that would have beaten MSU goalie Matt Migliaccio.

The first lead of the game was Michigan State’s, as David Booth tallied his fifth goal of the season on the power play to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The Badgers didn’t answer until the 4:40 mark of the third period, when Bourque scored his team-leading sixth goal on the power play. That goal snapped a 0-33 string on the man advantage for the Badgers, going back to the Nov. 2 Denver game.

The Badgers dominated play in the third period, out-shooting the Spartans 16-9. Wisconsin was a victim of the post again in the third period, when senior winger Brad Winchester’s shot from the slot deflected off the inside post.

Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the Badgers headed to overtime for the second time in the past five games.

Earlier this year, UW won a 2-1 overtime tilt at Minnesota-Duluth. This time, however, it was the Spartans getting the victory on a turnaround blind shot from the point by senior defenseman John Michael Liles. His shot found its way to the net after finding its way through traffic in front of Kabotoff and deflecting in over the UW goaltender’s right shoulder at the 3:50 mark of overtime.

Friday night, the Badgers took on eighth-ranked Michigan, Wisconsin’s fifth top-10 ranked opponent in the past seven games, in opening action of the 10th annual College Hockey Showcase.

Wisconsin got on the board first on a shot from the right point by senior defenseman Mark Jackson, his fourth of the year, on assists from Jake Heisler and John Eichelberger. The Wolverines knotted the game with a shorthanded tally by sophomore blueliner Eric Werner. Michigan gained control of the puck and moved up ice, setting up the man-down score at the 11:11 point.

The first period looked like it would end in a 1-1 tie, but with four seconds remaining, junior defenseman Jon Krall was called for hitting after the whistle. The face-off was in the Wolverine zone, to the right of Badger netminder Bernd Bruckler. After John Shouneyia won the face off, sophomore Eric Nystrom took a shot that deflected off a Wolverine player and back to Shouneyia, who netted his fourth of the year as the horn sounded at 19:59.

The Wolverines increased their lead early in the second period, when Jeff Tambellini fired the puck in from the slot off a drop pass from teammate Mark Mink. Nick Martens also assisted on Michigan’s third goal of the game. Just over 10 minutes later, Michigan’s Danny Richmond passed the puck from the point up to Jason Ryznar, who carried it up to the crease. Ryznar faked a shot and instead passed the puck to David Moss, who was right in front of the net and knocked it in for the final goal of the game.

Despite the numerous power-play opportunities, the third period remained scoreless. Wisconsin finished the game 0-9 on the power play, while Michigan was 1-5. Bruckler made 16 saves in the loss.
