After leading the UW softball team to three wins last week, junior pitcher Andrea Kirchberg was tabbed Big Ten Pitcher of the Week by the conference office Monday afternoon. It is her second honor of the season and herfirst outright since earning co-Pitcher of the Week April 1. Kirchberg tallied three wins in three complete games last week against UW-Green Bay and Minnesota, totaling 39 strikeouts while allowing just one run on seven hits and three walks. Her 0.33 ERA for the three contests lowered her season average to 1.37.
Kirchberg tied the UW single-game record with 15 strikeouts against UW-Green Bay on Wednesday, tossed a two-hit shutout with 13 K’s against Minnesota on Saturday and came back with an 11-strikeout performance to beat the Gophers on Sunday. Her 275 strikeouts this season are just 24 shy of her own UW record of 299, set during the 2000 campaign, and she totals 853 over her three-year career.
