The Badgers (9-12 overall, 3-8), the No. 10 seed in the 2002 Big Ten men’s tennis tournament, upset No. 7 Iowa in opening-round play at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. David Hippee clinched the match for the Badgers at the No. 4 position, defeating Iowa’s Hunter Skogman, 6-2, 7-5.
The Badgers advance to the quarterfinals to play No. 2 Ohio State at 10 a.m. Friday. Wisconsin started the match on top by winning the doubles point. In the No. 2 position, Justin Baker and Danny Westerman defeated Jake Wilson and Skogman, 8-6. The Badgers’ Alex Kasarov and Hippee crushed Pete Rose and Petar Mandic, 8-1, at the No. 3 position.
UW shut out the Hawkeyes at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 positions. Westerman, winning his 26th match of the season, defeated Stuart Waters, 6-3, 6-1. Scott Rutherford defeated Wilson, 6-1, 6-4.
