WASHINGTON (REUTERS)—Washington Wizards guard Michael Jordan will miss the remainder of the season due to inflammation in his right knee, the team announced Wednesday.

The five-time NBA league most valuable player was placed on the injured list after scoring a career-low two points during the Wizards’ 113-93 drubbing by the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night.

“Following his surgery, Michael did absolutely everything to come back as quickly as possible to help this team in our playoff push,” said Wizards General Manager Wes Unseld.

“In doing that, Michael probably pushed a little too hard and is now experiencing inflammation in the knee as a result,” Unseld continued.

Jordan, 39, had arthroscopic knee surgery on his right knee Feb. 27 to repair torn lateral meniscus cartilage. He sat out 12 games before returning March 20.

“I think it is best at this point to rest the knee and let it heal properly,” said Jordan, who has come off the Wizards’ bench since returning from his surgery. “I tried to get back and play as soon as possible, and, early on, the knee responded well. But after the swelling this morning, I think it’s best to give it rest.”

Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles and picked up six finals MVP awards in the process, said last week he will not make a decision about playing next season until he can evaluate his health during the off season.

“I signed a two-year contract to play,” said Jordan. “Obviously, my health will always determine my playing status, but at this time, my plan is to play next season.”

Jordan leads Washington in scoring with a 23.3 point average. The Wizards (34-40) are 2 1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
