Freshman goaltender Bernd Bruckler (Graz, Austria) was voted to the 2002 WCHA All-Rookie team, announced today at the league’s annual awards banquet held at the Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul. He was the only Badger recipient of postseason honors this year.

Bruckler, who started 18 games this season for the Badgers, was 6-8-2 and topped all league first-year netminders with a 3.09 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. Among all WCHA goaltenders this season, Bruckler finished fifth in save percentage and seventh in goals-against average. He is the first Badger rookie named to the league’s all-rookie team since Jim Carey in 1992-93.

In his first start as a Badger, against Wayne State Oct. 20, he earned a 5-0 shutout. In a two-game series with St. Cloud State in January, Bruckler was named the league’s Player of the Week for efforts in the three-point UW weekend over the Huskies. In February, he made a career-high 50 saves in a 5-5 overtime tie at Colorado College.

Three other Badgers were named to the WCHA’s All-Academic team. Sophomore Jake Heisler (Bloomington, Minn.), junior Brad Winchester (Madison, Wis.) and senior Andy Wheeler (Duluth, Minn.) were all recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom this past year.

To earn a spot on the league’s all-academic team, student athletes must meet three criteria: They must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution, have a grade-point average of at least 3.00 (on a scale of 4.00) and have competed in at least half of their institution’s games during the season or 33 percent of the team’s minutes if a goaltender.
