The Hoosier women’s basketball team shocked No. 8 Wisconsin by claiming a 70-63 overtime win over the Badgers Thursday at Assembly Hall.

The win upped Indiana’s season record to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin fell to 16-3 overall and 7-2 in conference.

“This was an outstanding win for us,” Indiana head coach Kathi Bennett said. “We never stopped believing after some tough losses. There has never been a lack of effort or attitude.”

The Hoosiers found their range early in the game, opening up a 23-9 advantage behind a balanced scoring attack highlighted by Jill Chapman, Erin McGinnis, Heather Cassady and Jenny DeMuth.

Chapman came out with a particular vengeance after being held to a season-low six points against Michigan in Indiana’s last game. The senior scored 13 of the Hoosiers’ first 23 points on six-of-seven shooting from the field and went on to score a season-high 30 points and grab 11 rebounds for her Big Ten-best 10th double-double of the year.

“Jill was incredible,” Bennett said. “She finished well around the basket, and I felt she got banged around a lot. We had to prove we could hit some shots. That opened things up for Jill, and we started to show teams that we can score.”

Wisconsin center Emily Ashbaugh drew the assignment of guarding Chapman to start the game, but after yielding nine points in nine minutes, Badger head coach Jane Albright switched Jessie Stomski onto her. It was a matchup that lasted only one trip downcourt—a Chapman layup.

At that point, Albright went back to Ashbaugh on the Hoosiers’ star. She did not have much more luck, as Chapman made 12 of her 17 field goals in the game.

Erin McGinnis scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had six assists, while Cassady scored 11 points and had five assists.

The win continued Indiana’s dominance over Wisconsin at Assembly Hall, as the Hoosiers have a 21-1 all-time advantage over the Badgers in Bloomington. IU has won 13 straight over Wisconsin in Bloomington.

However, Bennett claims this didn?t factor into her decision.

“I had no idea,” Bennett said. “Let’s keep the streak going.”

A key factor in the contest, as it is in all Indiana games, was the play of the Hoosier defense. IU forced Wisconsin into 25 turnovers and limited Preseason Big Ten Co-Player of the Year Jessie Stomski to 6-of-15 shooting.

The Hoosiers went into the locker room at halftime with a 36-29 lead. IU’s first-half point total was its highest of the Big Ten season and the most scored in the first half for the Hoosiers since they scored 37 against Kent State Dec. 21.

A combination of questionable shot selection and turnovers got Indiana off to a rocky start in the second half, but the Hoosiers’ consistently suffocating defense kept Wisconsin from mounting any sort of comeback. When Jill Chapman took a charge with 15:14 remaining, it sparked a 7-2 Hoosier run that enabled Indiana to open up a 46-36 lead with 12:12 remaining.

However, Tamara Moore helped bring the Badgers back with five unanswered points of her own, cutting the IU advantage to five. The Hoosiers had their chances to pull away, but they struggled with free throws and failed to capitalize on some easy looks under the basket.

Wisconsin did not go away quietly, as UW rallied back behind Moore, who brought the Badgers within two points at 53-51 with just under four minutes left.

After Erin McGinnis and Jessie Stomski traded baskets at both ends of the floor, the game stood at 55-53 with 1:15 remaining. Jill Chapman knocked down one of two free-throw attempts to put IU up 56-53, then blocked a shot by Tamara Moore on the other end.

Forced to foul, the Badgers sent Heather Cassady to the line. She made one of two to stretch the lead to four, but an immediate three-pointer by Kyle Black brought Wisconsin to within one at 57-56 with 36.8 seconds remaining.

UW fouled Cassady a second time, and she made one of two again to give IU a 58-58 lead with 20 seconds remaining. The Badgers had one last possession to tie, and a Moore layup did just that, sending the game into overtime.

The Hoosiers rattled off five of the extra time’s first seven points, and after Cassady took a charge from Stomski and Tara Jones drained a runner in the lane and was fouled, IU opened up a 65-60 lead. Jill Chapman added two free throws to put the Hoosiers up, 67-60, and a pair of Erin McGinnis free throws gave IU a 69-60 lead with 44 seconds remaining. The Badgers surged late, but a Tara Jones free throw put the game away, sealing the 70-63 win.
