CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (REUTERS) — North Carolina has started 0-3 for the first time since the Great Depression, as Indiana got clutch play from A.J. Moye and Tom Coverdale for a 79-66 win in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge Wednesday night.

Moye and Coverdale combined to go 7 for-8 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes, as the Hoosiers (4-1) built a 10-point lead by making 9-of-17 behind the arc and never let the struggling Tar Heels back into the game.

Moye finished with 20 points, while Coverdale had 17 and Jared Jeffries added 11.

North Carolina must beat Georgia Tech Sunday or avoid its first 0-4 start in 92 years of basketball.

The Tar Heels played better than in Smith Center losses to Hampton and Davidson, but still shot just 37 percent and turned it over 18 times to lose four straight at home for just the third time in school history.

That included a 14-point loss to eventual national champion Duke to end last year’s regular season.

Indiana missed its first seven long-range shots to start the second period, but got solid inside play from Jeffries and George Leach to help put the Tar Heels away.

Leach made two shots in the lane and a 12-footer, while Jeffries had a steal and lay up, two shots in the lane and two free throws as the Hoosiers went up by 13 points with 8:37 left.

Kris Lang led the Tar Heels with a career-high 27 points. His previous best was 22 points twice last season.

But the 6-foot-11 senior was about the only offensive threat the Tar Heels could muster in the program’s worst start since 1928-29.

Indiana led for all but the first possession of the first half.

Every time the Tar Heels drew close, either Moye or Coverdale would make a three-pointer as Indiana sank more than half of its shots from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes against North Carolina’s zone.

Coverdale hit two straight long-range shots in a span of 24 seconds after the Tar Heels closed to 26-24, while Coverdale and Moye made a three-pointer each in the final 2:03 of the period to help Indiana go up 40-30.

Lang had a near perfect half to keep the Tar Heels within 10 at the break. He hit his first five shots as his teammates were a combined 0-for-8.

While Lang was 7-for-9 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line for 18 points, fellow senior Jason Capel had seven of North Carolina’s 12 turnovers.

Lang finished 11-for-16 from the field and 5-for-7 from the foul line with eight rebounds.
