PONTIAC, Mich. (REUTERS) — The winless Detroit Lions, who have lost two of their wide receivers for the season over the last two weeks, tried to fill the gap by signing journeyman free agent Bert Emanuel on Wednesday.
The 0-5 Lions also announced that they had released veteran defensive end Alonzo Spellman.
Emanuel was released by the New England Patriots on Oct. 9 after playing just one game for them this season.
In eight NFL seasons with Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Miami, Emanuel has recorded 334 receptions for 4,631 yards and 28 touchdowns.
He signed as a free agent with New England in March and had four catches for 25 yards in the season opener.
Spellman, who signed with Detroit as a free agent during the offseason, had four tackles and one sack playing primarily in third-down situations for the Lions.
A first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 1992, Spellman has compiled 348 tackles and 43 sacks with the Bears, Dallas Cowboys and Detroit.
Germane Crowell, who tore the patella tendon in his left knee in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee, was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, making him ineligible to return this season.
Crowell had 22 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns before suffering his season-ending injury. He set a career high with nine receptions in a loss to Minnesota on Oct. 14.
Herman Moore, Detroit’s all-time leading receiver, went on injured reserve last week with a torn muscle in his abdomen.
