Over the course of the last week, we have been inundated with comments of the most reprehensible quality. Anti-Semitism was bandied about in our comments section for our story on Alpha Epsilon Pi. This spurred a dialogue between Dean of Students Lori Berquam, Hillel Executive Director Greg Steinberger and the University of Wisconsin-Madison student body over appropriate speech and the need to repudiate anti-Semitic speech in all forms.
Unfortunately, someone accustomed to a particularly virulent brand of that speech picked up on this debate and found it to be a keen opportunity to strike.
Bradley Smith, an infamous Holocaust denier, took this opportunity to place a link to his denial website on our online site. He paid $75 for the ad, and we chose to accept the advertisement.
The placement is a vile, reprehensible and absurd recreation of history that would be rejected as blatant lies and fantasy by any rational student on campus.
But it is because of this very fact that I have decided to accept this ad and allow it to run its course.
The site itself, the Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust, is a troth to lies that masks itself as an attempt to challenge conventional wisdom on whether the Holocaust and murder of 6 million Jews took place. The assertion is so wildly and obviously false that to even address its claims would be an exercise in futility.
But since its posting, members of campus and this office have asked whether that should be grounds for its deletion.
Since that question has been raised, I’ve poured over the arguments for and against. Deborah Lipstadt’s chapter on campus newspapers, whom Smith primarily attacks, detailed some students who chose to run the ad but defended it on First Amendment principle. Others rejected it as outright lies and apologized for publishing it in the first place. Some, unfortunately, gave the impression that it was merely a controversial “opinion” in the marketplace of ideas.
This paper did not want to give Smith or his foolish ideas any legitimacy, nor did it want to benefit financially from such a reprehensible idea. However, at the same time, I did not want to serve a paternalistic role, telling this campus that these thoughts are so painful and wrong that to even discuss them would be dangerous.
After wrestling with the consequences of my actions and the principles on which this paper is based, I came to the conclusion that I cannot justify the removal of this ad.
This newspaper has made a principle of accepting any individual or group advertisement submitted. The only cases in which we would reject an advertisement are if it exhibits threats toward any person or group or is of a libelous nature. This advertisement, while certainly fueled by veiled anti-Semitism, does not rise to the level of threats and therefore does not merit rejection.
The basis of these decisions does not rest on a desire to collect money for these advertisements, but on the editorial principle that no opinions or assertions can be so offensive that we cannot bring ourselves to hear them. If we run from manifestly vitriolic, destructive and false arguments when they present themselves, they will continue to roam and perhaps proliferate.
We attend a research university of nearly unparalleled intellectual might. As such, we have attracted the most intelligent minds of our country into one intellectual community dedicated to the perpetual search for the truth. This was our mission in 1894 when the UW System Board of Regents defended the “fearless sifting and winnowing” for truth, and it serves a guiding social principle for this campus to this day.
It is that mission that should guide us in this instance. It is patently obvious to the most rational individual that there is no truth to Bradley’s grand project. Any student of this university who views the page (or, perhaps even the link) would recognize his mission as a wholesale rejection of truth and, in turn, dismiss it.
Removing this advertisement would undercut and debase that belief in rational evaluation. The UW community has every ability to confront these lies and reject them on their face. To remove this advertisement would assume our community lacks the intellectual integrity to properly define this movement as an affront to objective truths. The absolute incompetence with which Smith defends his views can only be fully illuminated if this campus is faced to confront those views in their rawest form.
There are, of course, those who make the argument this advertisement will legitimize a supposed “opinion” by giving it publicity, placement and protection. I would argue the exact opposite would happen if we scrapped the advertisement: Smith would argue, as he has in the past, that such suppression is part and parcel of the exact reason he embarks upon this insane mission of his. He will caterwaul and gain a few misguided converts and move on to other student communities with a slightly increased entourage. What is more, many would still be drawn to the site through the sheer amount of ranting and resistance such a rejection would elicit.
By allowing the ad to run and acknowledging its completely vacuous nature, we place this idea in the marketplace where it will be met with disgust, bemused laughter and, above all, facts. Such refusal to accept these rotten goods will expedite its expulsion from this market; pretending they do not exist simply allows them to fester and pollute all items that surround them.
For all those who doubt this scenario and the rationality of the student body, I remind you of our most recent high profile case of rampant lies and rejection of the truth.
A few years ago, UW was presented with lecturer Kevin Barrett. His view, held by a fringe minority, that the September 11 attacks were planned by the United States government, was viewed in a much more dangerous context: UW classrooms. While many in the state Legislature fought for his removal, UW gave him the class and allowed him to teach and carry out his elucidation of this distortion.
The class came and went and the evaluations of Barrett were positive. But his continued push on campus of the conspiracy view of 9/11 for Truth was met with eye rolling and dismissal. He held press conferences on the subject, he crashed a lecture for David Horowitz with the topic and even ran for public office on the issue. It is not a coincidence that his false rant no longer plagues this campus as an issue of debate — his persistence was met with indifference and dismissal and now barely raises an eyebrow among the campus community.
The same process will and should take place with Smith. The money he paid for this advertisement will go toward efforts to counter his movement, as is the wish of the Board of Directors. The text ad to the left will be visited by some, but rejected by nearly all. His “argument” will flounder the second it is exposed. It will be viewed not as a revision of history but as a rejection of reality.
I understand the majority of this campus’ Jewish community must feel the placement of this advertisement compounds the harm created by reader comments. For that reason, every comment on this article will be intensely monitored for attacks, threats and expressions of hatred toward the Jewish community. Those comments will be deleted. There will inevitably be those comments that attempt to justify Smith’s position. Those comments will be posted. I can only hope that those who read these comments either meet them with deafening silence or come armed with the truth.
But if there is no debate, if the “sifting and winnowing” has been done, and there is no doubt that the truth is clear, we have nothing to fear when presented with obvious untruths. We must only stand guard of the truth while falsehoods are allowed to expend themselves of manufactured “legitimacy.”

Right on Smathers. Holocaust denial is reprehensible and well on its way to anachronism. Because of that, it’s important to let the deniers take out ads and shout their nonsense from the rooftops, that way the discussion takes place and their claims are transparently demonstrated to be faulty. In matters such as these, it’s always better to take the higher ground, defend First Amendment rights and let even the ugliest attempts at historical revision run their course. No harm will ever come of it and if anything we are stronger as a society by sticking to our principles. Repressing speech will only lend it credibility and I think everyone would agree that’s the last thing we want to do in this situation. -SS

I have a problem when a newspaper is selling Holocaust denial and not supporting it through an editorial. As I learned in my j559 class, message boards are a whole new realm of free speech which constitutional law has yet to address on a precise level. Hateful comments are protected by decency acts and what not. However, an ad is selling something. It can be an idea, a product, or a cause. An ad is trying to persuade someone to divest their time to “purchase” what ever is being sold. What was the motivation? to be raunchy? is that the new journalism revenue stream of the 21st century?
I know the truth. The Holocaust happened and its memory is always with me. I am Jewish and proud of it. As an American, I question the ethics of advertisements for this newspaper.
IP hash: f2613361
Let him run the ad. I would gladly take that fool’s money. I have faith in human beings seeing the facts and concluding that yes, of course the Holocaust happened. My grandpa saw the horrors firsthand when the allies liberated Europe. Let him say what he wants. It is ignorant and hateful speech but none of this matters when no one is listening.

Elan,
I too am a journalism student here at UW-Madison and have been following this controversy ever since it started. I’m not Jewish, but a lot of my best friends are. I completely respect the Jewish community and all of their history and would not deny that history for even a second. That being said, I would encourage you to realize that the motivation of the Herald for running this ad was not to be raunchy. Jason Smathers said:
“By allowing the ad to run and acknowledging its completely vacuous nature, we place this idea in the marketplace where it will be met with disgust, bemused laughter and, above all, facts. Such refusal to accept these rotten goods will expedite its expulsion from this market; pretending they do not exist simply allows them to fester and pollute all items that surround them.”
This is the motivation for running the ad. The Herald wants to deny its validity in hopes of expelling it from the market. Any rationally minded student on campus recognizes that the history of the Jewish people is not a lie and can also recognize that THE BADGER HERALD DOES NOT SUPPORTING THE FALSE NOTION THAT THE HOLOCAUST IS A LIE. This article makes it absolutely clear that The Herald does not support the advertisement in any way. The motivation is clear: we cannot put an issue like this under the rug because by denying the ad, The Badger Herald would simply put more of a spotlight on the issue and raise even more controversy. We have to recognize the position that The Herald is in: run the ad and face charges about being anti-semitic, or don’t run the ad, giving it much more publicity than it needs.
I am very proud of The Herald for addressing that they in no way, shape, or form, acknowledge that this ad has an truthful validity whatsoever and they are not even suggesting to defend it as free speech under the grounds that “it’s a valid opinion.” Because obviously, it’s not a valid opinion. The Holocaust is not a lie and by not running the ad, the Herald would be insulting the intelligence of its readers.
Readers should stop before accusing this newspaper of being anti-semitic. This article explicitly states the views of The Herald on the issue of the Holocaust and they are in no way anti-semitic.
IP hash: dc2081c5
Justify it anyway you want, if you run an ad you are promoting it. You can come out and write 1000 words why you wrote, but like they said they put it in the marketplace. What room is there for this hatred in the market place?
Also, why would they get more criticism for not running the ad? Do you think people would stand in out rage that the BH did not run an ad in space that can be bought?
This also isn’t free speech, its paid speech. Once the ad space is bought they can say what ever they want, but in no way does the BH have to accept any ad for whatever reason they choose.
If the BH really wanted to raise valuable discussion about this issue they could have simply wrote an op/ed about why they turned it down. You are a journalism major so clearly you should know that ads try to make you think a certain way and convince to buy or act in a way they want you to. While on the other hand an article or letter to the editor can raise controversial issues and stimulate discussion in a public forum. The BH put up persuasive material on their website and tried to cover it up with a letter from the editor. Any genuine and worthwhile news source would put out real unbiased journalism to spark discussion, not run a hateful and dishonest ad. Period.
Also, we are talking about one the most evil acts to happen in modern history, why even acknowledge something that we all know is lie, that is what those people want exposer. If this paper really wants to open a forum on public speech, why not pick something relevant to our times, like obama bashing, or anti muslim sentiment in america. The holocaust was a tragedy or epic proportions and should be treated as such, the BH uses it in an attempt to raise a point, which I find repulsing, talk about exploitation.
IP hash: 839f82b5
if you aren’t jewish, you don’t understand this issue,so stop trying to justify it
IP hash: efe82264
Why take the ad in the first place though????
IP hash: 00238b7e
You should have never run the ad in the first place. Is the Badger Herald so desperate for $75? “The only cases in which we would reject an advertisement are if it exhibits threats toward any person or group or is of a libelous nature.” Would you run porn ads? The BH has taken a serious step back this year.
IP hash: adfcb766
Did you even read the article? Smathers stated that the $75 would be donated to efforts that oppose Holocaust Denial
IP hash: b466eea8
The $75 was only donated to minimize blame. When the ad was originally accepted, the Badger Herald planned to keep the money.
IP hash: 9a433ff7
When is enough enough? You say that you’ll invest the time and energy to monitor the Online comments to this article, to censor out those “attacks, threats and expressions of hatred toward the Jewish community.” Yet when it comes to what most would consider hatred toward the Jewish community in the form of paid speech, you accept it. Op/ed pieces and comments/letters to the editor are one thing, but advertisements are purely business. A store can reserve the right to refuse to sell goods.
I suggest setting up a roundtable discussion to revisit journalistic ethics, because maybe it’s time to reconsider the Herald’s editorial and advertising “principal [sic].”
IP hash: 64ff688d
All it takes is just one person to click on the ad and believe Smith’s words. You can’t assume that all people that come to the BH website are smart enough to know better. There are niave, uneducated people out that that believe what the read or are told. Not everyone researches or questions assertions. Hate can spread that easily as that.
To allow it on this site, which should hold some credibility, only justifies it in the mind of the niave and increases the likelyhood they would believe it.
IP hash: f151ec33
But the same could be said about your comment. Why should the BH allow your comment when it just takes one person to read it and believe that it is true? After all, there are naive, uneducated people out there who might believe everything they read.
The irony is that this is precisely the idea that lead to the Holocaust and every other dictatorship. People aren’t smart enough to run their own lives and so they must be controlled, they said. Those who allegedly know the truth must filter ideas to protect the ignorant masses.
IP hash: 1a6033fc
This person didn’t pay for the right to say this. Fundamental difference.

upon first glance at the herald’s website, ads for madison gas and electric, american express, cap centre market, and texas’ south padre island stand out. the major theme i’ve gathered from these sponsors is simple: they’re selling a commodity. they’re persuading us to buy something, and by the time they see some sort of profit, they’ve probably already forgotten which paper ran their advertisement in the first place.
the point is, advertisers in a student newspaper don’t intend to “spark debate,” and no matter how strongly you preach first amendment rights, your argument is still a spineless cop-out. codoh.com paid for an advertisement because they genuinely believed it would get them support, and no matter how you spin it, they will henceforth consider the badger herald their ally, their friend and most disturbingly, their beneficiary.
you argue that we attend a fist-class research university, filled with some of the nation’s most brilliant and forward-thinking minds, but while reading your words, i couldn’t stop wondering, “if we’re all so smart, who in their right mind let this happen in the first place?” there’s a big difference between free speech and ignorance, and as we’ve seen time and time again, blurring that line can have devastating results.
whether you’re trying to justify something you know was a mistake, or you genuinely believe your actions are ethically justified, your words are twisted logic - and moreover, they lack any true compassion. At this point, no further letters from the editor could possibly make up for your actions.
IP hash: 6757341c
The Herald is not anti-semitic and no one should think that. But please, enough is enough with using the Holocaust as proxy for expressing freedom of speech.
People should not stop reading the paper because of the ad. There are some very good writers that deserve the attention of students and faculty.
IP hash: 5130473b
also, dictionary.com defines the term “libel” as “anything that is defamatory or that maliciously or damagingly misrepresents.” According to your argument, “The only cases in which we would reject an advertisement are if it exhibits threats toward any person or group or is of a libelous nature.”
feel free to correct me, but you characterized the advertisement multiple times in your article as a horrific misrepresentation of the truth.
i refuse to believe this ad isn’t libelous.

No event in human history has been studied as thoroughly and carefully than the Holocaust. Thousands of thesis and dissertations papers have poured over all of the evidence, from anecdotal testimony to captured German war documents. Virtually every historian with a PhD in European History agrees that millions of Jews were systematically exterminated by Nazi Germany. One can no more “revise” this fact than one can revise the existence of gravity. Captured German documents alone account for enough evidence to convict Nazi Germany of mass genocide in any civil (not Islamic) court. You can suggest that 5.6 million Jews were killed, instead of six million. But, you cannot deny that millions of innocent Jews were murdered. The Wannsee Conference planned the killing. Nazi concentration camp records prove that it was carried out.
Whenever we stand up to those who deny or minimize genocide we send a critical message to the world. As we continue to live in an age of genocide and ethnic cleansing, we must repel the broken ethics of our ancestors, or risk a dreadful repeat of past transgressions. We know from captured German war records that millions of innocent Jews were systematically exterminated by Nazi Germany - most in gas chambers. These facts have been proven repeatedly through countless thesis and dissertation research papers. Virtually every PhD in the world will stake their career on the veracity of known Holocaust facts. Despite this knowledge, Holocaust deniers ply their mendacious poison everywhere, especially with young people on the Internet. Such deniers have only one agenda - to distort the truth in a way that promotes antagonism against the object of their hatred, or to deny the culpability of their ancestors and heroes.
Museums and mandatory public education are tools to dispel bigotry, especially racial and ethnic hatred. Books, films and presentations can reinforce the veracity of past and present genocides. They help to tell the true story of the perpetrators of genocide; and they reveal the abject terror, humiliation and degradation resulting from prejudice. It is therefore essential that we disclose the factual brutality and horror of genocide, combating the deniers virulent, inaccurate historical revision. We must protect vulnerable future generations from making the same mistakes.
A world that continues to allow genocide requires ethical remediation. We must show the world that religious, racial, ethnic, gender and orientation persecution is wrong; and that tolerance is our progeny’s only hope. Only through such efforts can we reveal the true horror of genocide and promote the triumphant spirit of humankind.

I disagree some what. A world class university has thinkers from all different perspectives. But, I agree with a lot of what you said.
IP hash: 87939d8f
This makes perfect sense, actually. The Herald is short money and content for their opinion page; why not kill two birds with one stone and accept an ad they can write 2,000 words about? Smathers loves pontificating on nothing, so this was pretty much a win-win situation for them.
IP hash: a2fb3cdf
It’s $75 that’s being donated to charity and this isn’t even on the opinion page, it’s running online only. Are you really that big of a jackass?
IP hash: 5b232ef8
Your reasoning behind running the ad is dangerous. Because it does not rise to the level of threats? That leaves the door open for plenty of ads. Would you run an ad promoting slavery? How about one that degrades Asian-Americans?
You also argue that your readers are rational enough to deny the ridiculous claims made by the web site. Did you forget what you wrote in your first sentence? “Over the course of the last week, we have been inundated with comments of the most reprehensible quality. Anti-Semitism was bandied about in our comments section for our story on Alpha Epsilon Pi.”
Hardly sounds like a rational readership to me.
I know you’ve read Lippmann, Jason. The public is not rational. That being said, the vast majority of intelligent people reading your paper understand the Holocaust happened. Running the ad doesn’t further enhance our understanding of the issue.
The only results of running the ad are $75 in the Herald’s pocket and reinforcement for the anti-Jew population that their ideas are shared by a larger, powerful network and worthy of being this paper’s ad space.
The running of the ad is shameful to your paper and its staff.

^slippery slope guy makes an appearance
IP hash: f151ec33
“Running the ad doesnt further enhance our understanding of the issue. “
That’s because the issue is not antisemitism, nor whether the Holocaust happened. The issue is the reaction to the ad.
A rational response would be to ignore the ad - it has no more cognitive significance than an ad claiming that the world is flat or that 2+2=3.
The reason for publishing the ad (in my view) is to challenge the prevalent idea that people have a right not to be offended and the collectivist notion that ideas surrounding ethnicity - past, present and future - should be treated as taboo.
IP hash: 5b632a66
Would the Badger Herald agree to place an ad denying slavery? Or denying Japanese Internment during WWII? I think not.
My grandparents are Holocaust survivors and they would be disheartened to hear that the newspaper at the great University their granddaughter attends accepted money to place an ad condoning the denial of the horrific things they went through.
I agree with Abram that a discussion should be set up to revisit journalistic ethics.

Academia providing hate-mongers a stage to spit their anti-Semitic bigotry crosses the line of incitement.
Last Spring, The Diamondback (UMaryland) covered their campus Muslim Student Association hosting of infamous Holocaust denier, Norman Finkelstein, during PassOver. A week later, the enraged father of one campus students marched into the DC Holocaust museum to gun down innocents. Only the intervention of security guards— one whom died heroically in the line of duty— prevented an awful slaugher.
Responsible journalism should not facilitate Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic bigotry. You are inciting violence.
IP hash: cc74816d
Let’s not create huge fabrications. Norman Finkelstein is not a Holocaust denier and his parents are Holocaust survivors. The rest of his family was killed in the Holocaust. Get your facts straight. His argument is that Israel uses the Holocaust to press its political agenda and uses the term anti-semitism to muzzle criticism of Israel’s actions. You can disagree with that if you’d like, but don’t call him a Holocaust denier.
IP hash: 83b6c53e
Your obnoxious denial of Norman Finkelstein’s record of Holocaust denial is unsupported by the evidence of his sordid history.
Finkelstein is a disciple of the discredited historian and Holocaust denier David Irving, whom he considers an authoritative scholar. http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individualProfile.asp?indid=2204
Own it, hate-monger.
IP hash: cc74816d
Furthermore, don’t try to relate Finkelstein’s criticisms of the state of Israel to an insane anti-Semitic murderer. It’s completely irrational to think Finkelstein speaking out against some of Israel’s abhorrent behaviors has anything to do with a guy being a crazy xenophobe who has been blogging about his hatred of Jews for years. The two aren’t connected at all, so don’t try to smear Finkelstein for somehow having caused this incident to take place.
IP hash: 83b6c53e
Again the evidence Finkelstein inciting the Holocaust Museum shooter is undeniable. The shooter’s son cites Finkelstein as his murdering father’s inspiration.
Diamondback (UMD): “The sins of the father: Holocaust Museum shooter’s son speaks out” http://www.diamondbackonline.com/2.2795/the-sins-of-the-father-holocaust-museum-shooter-s-son-speaks-out-1.276728

And who do we find inciting anti-Semitism during Passover at University of Maryland? …Norman Finkelstein http://www.diamondbackonline.com/2.2795/commenting-on-a-crisis-1.277458

The trouble here is that it was only a short while ago that the rampant anti-semitism that is present on this campus reared its head in these same comment sections. To come out, only a week later, saying the UW community is strong enough to face this is just wrong. Clearly a campus that on a daily basis disembowels Jewish members of its community for their style of dress, among other habits is not strong enough for this.
I completey reject the notion of a strong community when even the campus jewish community reads an editorial written by one of its own, a self-hating jew, on Israeal. I will also note that a rebuttle to the aformentioned Israel article was published today (a great attempt at balance), by a parent. A parent that has no ties to this “community” you speak of other than a son who did not have the desire to stand-up and write it himself (though I honestly feel for a kid whose parent writes a letter to the editor of his school newspaper, another topic completely.. also a great example of a jewish mother).
So cheers to badgerherald.com, now twice the tool of the anti-semetic community. Oh, and once the tool of a bunch of raging David archuletta fans.
Signed, A Jewish student who is sick and tired of ideology being put ahead of the lives of 6,000,000 Jews.

Maybe next the editor should advertise child porn websites to open up academica discussion on the merits of pedophilia. Afterall, the community is strong enough to debate NAMBLA.
I’m sorry, but not since Princeton Professor Peter Singer explained that Leftists should give as good as we get from dogs who hump their legs, have I been so exasperated with the way the Badger Herald editor uses his head for a colonoscopy to crab-walk across the stage of academia expecting all the world to think his new hat make him look smart. And, as with Singer’s efforts to get pet stores to carry Viagra, I have a very hard time taking this seriously and I’m not sure taking it seriously helps anybody.
IP hash: 9198106e
no matter what the argument is for the advertisement, the fact is that the badger herald allowed an advertisement from an organization that is full of lies. how can a serious organization, who also bases most of their stories on fabrications, allow more lies to be spread? instead of defending it, work towards spreading truth and real journalism.
IP hash: 3095d7ba
The Badger Herald is RIDICULOUS. It is not okay to repeatedly publish offensive material and then backtrack, apologize, and try to cover up what should have never happened. The staff and supervisors of the Badger Herald obviously have no common sense and have clearly shown time and time again that they have hidden biases.
IP hash: 4d26538c
As someone who used to write for the Herald, let me say I’m embarassed and disgusted that the BH would accept this advertisement. It is not a debate on whether or not the BH endorses or denies the argument that the holocaust never happened. There is a little thing called discretion that should be exercised when you accept an advertisement and decide whether or not to run it. By placing this ad on your site you are granting this lunatic a platform to further radiate his hate speech. Aren’t you ashamed that this man even sees your site as a viable market for his product?
As a Jewish person from New York who has had more than my fare share of anti-semetic comments thrown my way, I’ve developed a thick skin to nonsense. People are ignorant and small minded and that is the way of the world. However, very few things in life touch a chord in me like the Holocaust, other than perhaps the memory of 9/11. This is an explosive and emotional topic and there’s no reason this ad should’ve ever seen the light of (digital) day. Let me officially say for all who care to listen: I’m done reading your paper, Jason Smathers. SMH…
IP hash: 4369a93f
I’d have to agree with you, Max. Advertisers in all facets of media are faced with controversial ads and it no longer becomes a matter of free speech as much as are you going to grant someone the time of day if what they have to say is trivial and absurd.
I too am deeply, deeply upset with the editorial staff at the BH. To have this come on the heels of some major anti-Semetic commentary is just too much. Looks like I’ll be heading over to the Daily Cardinal as well. Jason Smathers should get over his giant ego and realize his little stand of “free-speech” principals is really just a method of him exerting his EIC pseudo-celebrity status. Badger Herald, spitting biases sine 1967.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that the Badger Herald staff ripped on AEPi for donating $2000 to charity because they claimed it cost more than they raised, but yet they have no problem donating $75 they raised by allowing such a horrible advertisement to run on their site and they think this is completely acceptable. I honestly cannot believe the actions of this newspaper and I wonder what they’re gonna do next.
I also truly believe that the cause of all these problems is the Badger Heralds online forum and allowing people to post comments anonymously. Freedom of speech is something we all treasure, but our words have weight and consequences and by allowing people to post whatever they want while being shielded through anonymity, people have the power to say very hurtful things. People have a right to believe what they want, but you gotta start owning up to it.
I agree with Abram as well. Something needs to be done.
IP hash: 4154a9d4
Great article, Jason. I don’t think half the people commenting on here even read the editorial. Great to see we have a student newspaper willing to defend free speech, even when it’s vile and offensive. It would’ve been easy to just pull the ad and forget about it, but you didn’t, and that took balls.
IP hash: b466eea8
Zach, maybe if you could get beyond your ignorance, you could understand what actually happened. There is a difference between publishing an opinion article that denies the holocaust and printing an paid advertisment. Accepting money to publish it is an entirely different story. It comes down to the fact that the Badger Herald obviously only publishes ads to make a profit. They published and publicized anti-semitic information, that is both hateful and untrue,in order to make money. Is publishing derogatory ads for a profit the same as free speech, or is it simply selling out your morals for a cheap buck? So while you try to defend this with the first amendment, realize what that really protects. It protect against government censorship (it also protects the right to practice a religion freely, ironically). So while you may say that the Badger Herald is legally allowed to do this, no one argues that. But since when has legal slandering and vocal anti-semitism, done only for a profit, been considered moral or ethical. Answer me that Zach.
IP hash: f151ec33
“Is publishing derogatory ads for a profit the same as free speech”
Yes, it’s a form of free speech.
IP hash: 42571c6e
Stand firm, Jason! The 1st Amendment to our Constitution expressly protects free speech. It does not address the political, religious, or ethnic background of the speaker or whether the speech is truthful or not. It protects free speech et.al.
I personally am offended by those who burn and trample on the Flag of the United States. I considered it “incitement” and have acted directly to stop it when I was present. I was offended by Andres Serrano, who garnered a $15,000 grant from the National Endowment For The Arts to submerge a small statue of Christs’ crucifixtion in his own urine. I am offended by those who label legitimate criticism of Barack Obama policies as being motivated by racism. Yet they are protected free speech.
I am deeply offended by the Bradley Smiths of the world, for you see, my father was in the US Army in Germany at the end of WWII, tracking down war criminals all over Europe and escorting them to the trials in Nuremburg. I heard his testimonies of the brutal atrocities commited by Hitlers Socialist Democracy of Germany first hand. I have personally seen the remnants of the camp at Dachau and read the personal histories of survivors of the atrocities at the other extermination camps. The evidence is undeniable. The murder of 6,000,000 people in Germany is as offensive and repugnant as the many millions of humans murdered by Joseph Stalin, Mao ZeDong, and Pol Pot. There are many that assert these mass murders in the name of socialism and marxism did not occur. They are lying…. but it is protected free speech.
When we fail to defend free speech, we end up with irrational laws and irrational people. They will defend Andres Serranos desecration of the crucifixtion of Christ as “art” but label swastika grafitti on a synagogue as “hate speech”. Both are done with the intent to offend a religious sensibility. How can one be called “art” and protected free speech while the other is deemed a criminal offense called “hate speech”? It is irrational and unsupportable.
Defend rational law and our Constitution by defending free speech. Trust that a free people will see through the deceits to the underlying truths. That was the sure belief of our Founding Fathers. Let’s not disappoint them!

Please do not confuse Hitler’s National Socialistic Party (Nazi’s) and socialism.
Socialism “refers to the various theories of economic organization advocating either public or direct worker ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources”. Nothing in socialism speaks to the systemic murder of millions of innocent people (jews and non-jews alike).
Hitler’s party’s views attempted to quash the “inferior races”, the non-germans and non-aryans. This the result of racism/nationalsm, not socialism. I mean, if nothing else, they are called the Nazis, not the Sozis.

Jason, although you went out of your way to denounce this disgusting advertisement, the fact is you still accepted it into your paper and printed it. An advertisement is just that: An advertisement. The Badger Herald placed an ad denying the Holocaust, which may not directly link the Badger Herald to this view, but at the same time it sends a bad message that a newspaper would allow an advertisement like this on their pages.
It was insensitivity on the Badger Herald’s part, and this isn’t the first time that the Badger Herald has pushed limits regarding the Jewish community. Simply put: Many of the Jewish students here, myself included had family dragged out of their homes, beaten, starved, and eventually gassed during this tragic event. By putting this ADVERTISEMENT in your paper, you spit on the Jewish community and had no regard for the Jews who didn’t get the chance to live their lives. The people who were murdered in the Holocaust do not deserve this, and neither does the community at large. You made a huge mistake, and this is a despicable attempt at damage control.
IP hash: 839f82b5
why was it, when your newspaper decided to run the mohammed cartoon from Denmark did you then hold a discussion forum with the Muslim Students Association….but when your comment screeners allow the posting of holocaust references to Jewish students, such as myself, and you sell ad space to a holocaust denier, WE GET NOTHING?
Answer up.
IP hash: c2319ae2
To Anon 3:41 P.M.
Assuming this ad came up just recently and the above article just ran today, I’d say you’re a little out of your mind by suggesting there should have been a forum of some sort by now. Calm down, kid. And wait up.
IP hash: 839f82b5
well, the holocaust comments were last week, should I hold my breath?
IP hash: 422b332e
The Badger Herald IS mistaken and IS Anti-Semitic.
IP hash: bd140bf8
amen.
IP hash: f2613361
My annoyance with anti-Semitism claims is growing by the day. Can’t anyone take the moral high road and let this shit just slide off your back. This has become another huge story for the BH, and without it I would have never gone to this man’s blog, which was interesting the same way 9/11 conspiracy blogs are. Bitching and moaning seemingly EVERY time the word “Jew” comes up in even a remotely negative context is not the way to go about changing people’s views. Claiming the BH is anti-Semitic is irresponsible and idiotic. Catering to everyone’s views, even when they may offend the Jewish people, is not anti-Semitism. It’s time to grow up and realize that there are things in life that are going to piss you off if you let them and this is one of those things, Bradley Smith is one of those people. At the end of the day we shouldn’t really care that people think the Holocaust never happened, it clearly did, and nothing will change that. I seriously don’t understand the logic behind all of this bitching and crying.
IP hash: ca459da8
this is one of the most irrational comments i’ve ever read. while letting “this shit slide off our backs” would provide a comfortable foundation for more defamation, i think i’ll pass.
IP hash: 4f5ab636
Asking questions about the holocaust is not defamation. Claiming newspapers and people are anti-Semitic for allowing a person to run an ad for a website that denies the holocaust is, IMO. In the end the truth always prevails and by allowing people to question the truth we move closer to it. Smith does ask some questions that I would like to know the answers to, but in no way does answering these questions take away from the fact that the holocaust occurred, it simply gives us more insight as to how it was allowed to happen. As an American from German descent, I sometimes am reminded what did occur while Germans looked on but this does not diminish the pride I have in my heritage. Knowing the reasons they did not stop this atrocity, most likely fear for their own families among others. would clarify my understanding of the situation. The holocaust is not a scar that the Jewish people bear alone.
IP hash: 3cd4a4b3
The difference btw the scars are that the Germany has the scar that they allowed this to happen while to Jewish community has the scar that as a group we are so hated that countries in Europe allowed the attempted end to a group of people solely based on not believing in a certain religion, your scar is shame ours is fear that in a modern advanced society this can happen again
IP hash: dc2081c5
By promoting the ad you promote the idea. Regardless if the BH agrees with it or if they don’t they brought it in front of the public. We are not in a time where we need to debate about the holocaust. If you want to be edgy and bring issue to be debated in a public forum why not health care or something else more relevant to the time. By accepting the money and the ad you do exactly what this insane group wants which is exposer, they don’t care what kind, they are being talked about and that is enough for them.
The business aspect of running the ad is also completely insane. This is a market place. SUCCESSFUL businesses are very smart in their market and corporate partnership. A SMART business would deny this ad because it links them to a group that tarnishes their image. The BH has done this. Regardless of the BH’s views they have ligitimized an irrational man by putting him on their website. At the same time they have decreditd themselves for doing business with a hateful group. I like someone who early posed the question: Would you run a porn ad? I bet they pay top dollar.
No onto the issue of allowing the ad to run to open debate and defunct this outrages claim. PLEASE. This is a newspaper, right an OP/ED, start a blog do some top notch investigative journalism, or even an interview. Trying to make a point or rise a discussion through advertising is just foolish. Don’t bring ethics into this. Its business. You took 75$ (i dont care what you did with to justify it) to run this ad, in order to allow students to “sift” and” winnow” the truth for themselves. Come on.
Bottom line: BH justifies running the ad to open debate and defunct a lie. 1. This isn’t even worthy of debate. The holocaust is one of the most horrific events to take place in modern times. Dignifying an oppentent to the holocaust, in any form is insulting and disrespeting. 2. Opening debate through an ad on a NEWSPAPER web site is the most ridiculous justification I have every heard. Do some real journalism for once. please.
IP hash: 0d50f32c
So why is the Badger Herald instituting a more stringent screening process so anti-semitic comments don’t appear on the blog again like that? Isn’t that free speech as well? That’s a bit hypocritical is it not?
Unfortunately this person who paid to have his ad run is getting a lot of exposure because of this article.
Leave it up the judicial system of the United States if there is an issue of free speech. Don’t help spread hate.
Terrible thing the Badger Herald just did. Terrible.
IP hash: 44f17375
While I do not understand why the ad was placed in the first place, or why anyone would ever deny the atrocious events of the holocaust, it is entirely counter productive to call for the removal of the advertisement. We all need understand that CODOH, the group that is sponsoring the advertisement, is making some rather outlandish and unsupported claims merely to spark unrest in the Jewish community. These people probably LOVE the split they have created between the Madison Jewish community and our main outlet for expressing our first amendment rights. If you are a Madison Jew who is boycotting the Badger Herald because of this advertisement or any other coverage the Herald has given on recent events, congratulations, you have helped CODOH achieve its goal by further separating the Jewish community from the rest of campus.
IP hash: 6c8f1e11
The text ad began running on the BH on Monday. The BH only responded today. It took 4 days for them to figure out they made a mistake and then they failed to acknowledge the mistake or say they were sorry.
IP hash: 75028d4f
“The money he paid for this advertisement will go toward efforts to counter his movement, as is the wish of the Board of Directors.”
Wait, there’s actually a charity dedicated to reminding people of the Holocaust and confirming that it happened? I bet the crybaby Jews that have flooded the BH message boards would twist that charity and call it anti-semitic as well, saying it’s rubbing their face in the holocaust and bringing up horrific facts, or something.
Bottom line, the Jews who have commented on the stories these past few weeks have come off as whiney babies, playing the victim card any chance they get, no matter what. That’s what I take away from the whole thing.
“BH is anti-semitic….. (or my personal favorite) this campus is anti semitic because Jews are persecuted against for what they wear…and called….(gasp) COASTIES!”
I can’t wait for the next story that mentions Jews or Israel, so the sensitive idiots can come out in droves again and play the “we’re being persecuted” card.
IP hash: acf52038
I’m sorry but I think you need to reevaluate the way you think about the world. Jews have been persecuted for centuries and centuries. This is not something new and honestly most Jews are fed up with it. In the 21st century things should be different.
The goal in having an organization to remember the Holocaust and the horrific events that occurred there is to continue to remind people what happened so that something so terrible will not happen to Jews or any other religion, race, or what not again.
The BH’s recent actions in regard to anti semitism are ridiculous. It amazes me that this is an issue in such a liberal University’s newspaper. As a granddaughter of Holocaust survivors with relatives who survived and others who perished in the Holocaust, it both frightens and amazes me that people are able to deny the Holocaust.
We are not so called “cry babies.” We are merely fighting hatred. The Jewish people are sensitive to hatred because of the Jewish past.
What you have just said is really insensitive. I hope you take what I have said seriously and reconsider the facts.

One of Bradley Smith’s tantalizing arguements states that Auschwitz, Treblinka, Majdanek, and all other so-called death-camps were surrounded by see-through wire fences making them visible day and night to surrounding villagers and towns, so if, as claimed, thousands a day were being murdered American and British governments and militaries must have known about them as they had spies and resistance fighters throughout Poland.
Following this argument, British and American air-forces, who had photographed the camps from the air and could have bombed the rail-lines and rail-bridges entering the camps, didnt drop any bombs on the camps or railway lines even though large camps like Auschwitz were over-flown and photographed many times from April to December, 1944 as planes approached and bombing adjacent industrial buildings.
Arguements like this certainly spark intellectual discussion.
IP hash: e53de81d
The camps were often just outside small Polish towns. Auschwitz, for example, was named after O?wi?cim, a small Polish town in the middle of nowhere. And you’re also right that the Poles probably saw the Jews being killed, and no doubt smelled the burning flesh.
All this means is that while the Nazis were systematically murdering Jews and other minorities, the Polish people went on with their daily lives as if nothing were occurring. You know why? Well, because the vast majority of them hated Jews. Period. One of the biggest reasons the Nazis were able to succeed in murdering six million is because the Polish people stood by and let it happen in their own country.
Bradley Smith’s “argument” is nothing more than an anti-Jewish man’s quest to defend Hitler, the most prestigious mass-murderer of all time, and to deny Jews the respect they deserve after going through the worst six years in human history. This isn’t sparking “intellectual discussion.” This is sparking a discussion of pure hatred. The fact that you cannot see that is astounding.
Go to Poland now. Try to find the 90% of the 3.5 million Jews that were murdered by Nazi hands during World War II. I guarantee you won’t, unless you go to Majdanek and see the huge pit of ash. Or go to one of the dozens of mass graves in the Polish countryside. See Auschwitz for yourself, then try to say that Smith is sparking an intellectual discussion I think you might change your mind.

I have posted comments pointing the blatant anti-Semitism of liberals on the UW-Madison campus twice in the past 24 hours and both comments were not printed here. Why? Do liberals honestly think that no one still notices how hateful liberals have become?
IP hash: b4cceae4
I find it quite ironic that many of those who use the word ‘anti-semetic’ frequently also accuse others of dropping the race card on a regular basis. I don’t really see the difference here.
I obviously agree that this Bradley Smith is a loon, but this is just something I have noticed over the past few weeks reading the articles in the BH.
IP hash: 19ba285f
I’m so sick of the poor me society that America has become. Suck it up and deal with it. Everyone gets picked on once in awhile, and when you whine about it it just fuels the fire. If you would just drop it or confront it calmly and rationally then it would go away. Calling a student newspaper anti-semetic is ludicrous, and insane. It’s like some of the liberals on this campus who call me (a conservative) a racist for disagreeing with Obama’s policies. It’s absolutely insane. I suggest that everyone grows up a little bit.
I’m the first to agree that the Jewish plight throughout history has been horrible. You guys have gone through terrible, terrible things. But to pull the “Jew or anti-semetism card” every time something offends or something happens to you takes away from the real hardships that Jews have faced.
The only real way to stop anti-semetism is to let it go away, and if you never let your past go anti-semetism will follow you forever. Embrace your past, but let it go. You were never part of the Holocaust and you have never faced the troubles that your grand parents went through. Not everyone is out to get you and you need to understand that.

I’d give the Herald $75 just to prevent Smathers from writing this, but all my parents’ money is tied up in the money I give to the new union building project.

I find it ironic that the BH lambasts AEPI in its Staff Editorial for using the argument that the frat’s event at the Overture Center was for charity, yet does the EXACT same thing in defending its purchasing of this advertisement, saying the revenue from it would be used for charity.
Sounds like hypocrisy!

How stupid it is to fight the people who actually have a good understanding of History and WWII, you should be angry at the liars. Everyone has to believe that 6,000,000 Jews died in Gas chambers, burned alive, ect. even if the facts state otherwise or they’re anti-semites, BS!

RespectableWhiteMan, you’re so full of crap! Do you honestly believe that the numbers were exaggerated? What would’ve been the necessity? Allied forces who liberated the camps didn’t need to wait for a full and accurate body count to know the extremes to which the Nazis went to exterminate as many Jews and others as they could. It wouldn’t matter if it were 6 million or only 600. They were systematically murdered because they were Jews. Six Million! More than half the states in the USA aren’t even that big! Yeah, like 65 years ago someone thought “Hey, let’s inflate the body count big-time, in case some punks at a college newspaper try to refute all claims that this shit even happened.”

Obviously and without any doubt whatsoever, we can all agree that there is not the slightest chance that anything any holocaust revisionist anywhere ever says, is anything even remotely near any galaxy wherein any trace of truth could possibly exist, however; it occurs to me, that if I were a student, faculty, staff, administration or other member of the badger “community,” it would be unwise for me to admit that I agree with anything the revisionists are saying. its quite funny if you think about it. the BH claims that they will take the money and donate it to fight holocaust denial, yet they absolutely smash that AEPi frat for giving $2,000 to charity because it was raised in conjunction with a party.
i dont know who runs this paper, or who hires the people, but i do know this: the badger herald does more to tarnish its reputation among the student body than it does to work for the student body.
another question, and i hope someone from the BH reads this and takes it to heart: is the economy so bad that there was no other company or organization that would have taken out the ad for the $75 you charge?
its as if the badger herald does these stupid acts only so that they can write apologies and justifications to fill up the paper.

First of all there are too many anonymous posts! If you have something to say on either side anonymity is a way of hiding, as the Jewish People had to do to avoid death in the holocaust. Read The Hiding Place or Anne Frank!! We must not hide OR be afraid to state our opinion, and admit who are. But, the question becomes should BH publish or enable a link to a website that is filled with hatred and FALSE FACTS!!In some countries it is ILLEGAL to deny the holocaust. Those laws were made for a reason, and, perhaps, before publication the BH editorial staff ought to consider WHY it is illegal in those countries (WHO DO ALLOW FREEDOM OF SPEECH), and consider the potential dangers of allowing those links.

this comment censoring is arbitrary, i try to post something about jews on this campus being crybabies and playing the victim and it gets deleted. but someone can call out smathers for having bitch tits and that makes it on a board? or how about the incriminating posts on the “how to deepthroat” article? wtf BH

Its not that everyone hates jews, but I must bring this up.
Now, In no way or form do I believe this paper is anti-Semitic or is Jason Smathers. But as a history major I must point out a potential historical linkage. I am not saying this is why these articles have caused controversy, this is simply for understanding.
During times of economic and fiscal crisis, Jews have been the targets of anti semetic attacks. In France, There have been major waves of this behaviour, starting with the Dryfuss Affair.
Do u guys think that targeting jews is apart of our subconscious right now because of the recent economic downturn?

Bradley Smith is not an anti Semite. I have carefully studied the issue of the claims of 6,000,000 Jews being gassed and find it is a hoax. Why? very simple. There is no and I repeat no forensic evidence.
IP hash: 70fa8dd8
allow me to cite 3 examples that support my case. 1.) After world war 2 many world leaders wrote books about WW2. Eisenhower, Degaulle, Stalin, Truman and even Churchill. Not one ever mentioned gas chambers! that is important as these leaders had full access to the intelligence of the time.
2.) Auschwitz was built on a swamp. It has a 30 CM water table. Burial on that type of ground is impossible. That is why cremation was used. There were in total about 35 cremation ovens, but often only 20 in use. The ovens plus the coal shipments define for us the upper boundaries of cremations at Auschwitz. It is about 80,000. If you want to posit there were 1,150,000 who died at Auschwitz ( 1,000,000 alleged were Jews) you need to explain where the 1,070,000 bodies went becasue they are missing!
3.) Treblinka stories allege 870,000 were gassed and burned on outdoor pyres. That story is so full of holes it is incredible. The least effective way to cremate a body is an outdoor pyre, and it is impossible to do in a climate that is colder, and wetter than even Madison. but that is what they claim. There are no records of coal shipments to Treblinka nor wood or fuel shipments. But is gets even more bizarre. The story claims these bodies were dug up from the ground, which would have been frozen and then burned outside in the winter. Could you imagine trying to burn a dead frozen deer on a outdoor grill in February with no fuel in northern wisconsin.
The facts of the matter are, most of the early claims from Treblinka were that detainees were steamed to death. yes, steamed to death. Second most common theme was they went into a room and the air was sucked out of it. gassing became the story in later years. but even there they messedup cliaming it was diesel fumes, a non lethal agent which is 12% oxygen.
In short, I submit the holocaust is mostly lies and the absurd story tellers are the best evidence. Afterall, there is no forensic evidence.
IP hash: f631334e
I’m sorry, so where are you saying that everyone who was said to be killed in the Holocaust went? They were not killed in the Holocaust, but just vanished? Interesting. Tell that to 6 million families.
IP hash: acf52038
You are absolutely absurd. It has been said with other comments here but if you think the Holocaust is a lie you MUST go to Poland now. I stood in front of the Barack my grandmother stayed in Auschwitz. I walked through the gas chambers Majdane, which could be fully operational today in no time. My great grandparents were killed in the Holocaust, my second cousins, and so many more family members. Most of them were killed in gas chambers. Let me ask you this question…if the Holocaust is a lie why did my grandfather and grandmother spend years searching for their families afterwards?
You seriously need to rethink the facts on your own. Maybe intellectuals have their points of view that convince you one way or another, but to make a statement like that you NEED to research it yourself.
IP hash: 99c93f8d
The article says that the editor will print comments supporting Smith’s position. Here’s you chance.
I wrote a comment supporting his position by arguing that the holocaust is in fact a hoax. There is a book on the subject written by Arthur Butz, “The Hoax of the Twentieth Century”, a professor at Northwestern.
My comment was censored. So I’m posting this comment which merely mentions that some people, even professors, think the holocaust is a hoax.
Let’s see if this one makes it .

How does it feel Smathers knowing becuase of this ad, the student population is now being spammed with anti-semetic emails. I can choose to ignore your paper, but I have now received 3 emails denying the deaths of 6,000,000 people. Great.
IP hash: 6c8fd9d2
This is another email in support of Bradley Smith’s position. It gives some of the reasons that the holocaust story needs to be fully examined by unbiased scholars ….
The book, “The First Holocaust, Jewish Fundraising Campaigns With Holocaust Claims During World War One”, by Don Heddesheimer, is available on amazon.com. The book is documented with reprints of article from the NYT and other press.
There are two gas chambers, one a Auschwtiz and one a Majdanek, that are shown to the public everyday. Both these gas chambers are suspect as they have unbarred plate glass windows. See photos at www.holohoax101.com
There are photos that show smiling children when the British approached the camps. These photos have never appeared in the US media. You can see them online, at www.holohoax101.com, for example.
The Nazis wrote death certificates for every prisoner that died at Auschwitz. There records were hidden by the Soviets for years, but are now available. According to these records, more Roman Catholics died at Auschwitz than Jews. Links to the records are given at same link
Butz’s book, “The Hoax of the Twentieth Century” shows how the war propaganda during WW II was transformed into ‘historical fact’ by the Nuremberg trials, and he traces the organization of the trials and describes thei shortcomings.
Etc.

Links have been shifting. What’s the story there?
Let’s see if the comments section is still alive, or is it the case that the paper is in full flight from the holocaust subject …
Here’s another fact that supports Bradley Smith,
The three most prominent holocaust survivors who have provided a great deal of testimony on the Nazi atrocities are Elie Wiesel, Otto Frank, and Primo Levi. They have something in common: when they Soviet army approached Auschwitz they were all in the camp, in camp hospitals, being treated for disease (Frank and Levi had typhus) and injury (Weisel had an injured and infected foot). The Nazis gave the patients able to travel the option of staying to await the Soviets, or evacuating. Wiesel chose to evacuate, Frank and Levi stayed.

Yet this is exactly what they did to cremate bodies after the bombing of Dresden. You’re not going to be very popular with your fellow nazis if you start denying Dresden. Saggy is a moron.

Governments of Israel, Poland, and Germany, published information refuting holocaust!
For decades the commemorative plaques at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland proclaimed that the number of Jews murdered in that camp was 4 million; consequently 2 million must have been murdered elsewhere to arrive at the historic figure of 6 million Jews gassed and cremated by the Nazis.
In 1990 the Polish government, after years of study and research concluded that the number of Jews murdered in Auschwitz had been exaggerated by the communists who had liberated this concentration camp, and that 1.5 million was a more realistic number. The commemorative plaques were replaced with new ones acknowledging this reduced estimate.
Subsequently this lower figure was further reduced to a generally accepted number of 1.1 million (as per Wikipidia) for a revised total claim of 3.1 million murdered Jews.
In 2002 the Israeli government is on record as stating that in the year 2000 about 1.1 million holocaust survivors were still alive.
In 2005 the German government is on record as stating that it was still paying compensation to about 1.5 million holocaust survivors.
The conflicting data from Israel and Germany may be averaged: (1.1 m + 1.5 m) / 2 = 1.3 million survivers in 2003, to establish a point half-way between the two data points. That puts the number of survivors at 1.3 million 58 years after liberation of the camps.
The American Journal of Public Health, Dec. 1949, pg 1582, published the mortality rates for various European countries, varying from a low of 8 per thousand to almost 15 per thousand population. Since the camp survivors had been subjected to deprivations, disease, starvation, physical abuse, freezing cold, medical experiments, etc. it is reasonable to conclude that the camp survivors as a group would have a mortality rate at least at the higher level of 15 per thousand, certainly not less or the claims of deprivations would then sound hollow.
The mortality rate of 15 per thousand may be applied as a multiplier to the Jewish survivor population as follows: P x .98558 = 1.3 m, where P is the number of survivors in 1945, .985 is the multiplier for a mortality rate of 15 per thousand, meaning that 1000 people x .985 = (1000 - 15) = 985 people survive after one year. After 58 years the original population will have decreased by .985 raised to the 58th power, ie. .985 x .985 x .985 x …. for 58 terms. Then, solving the equation for P, and using the known information as published by the above governments, the calculation shows that: P = (1.3 m / .98558) = (1.3 m / .416) = 3.124 million survivors in 1945, ie. slightly more than the number claimed as murdered.
As author and professor Norman Finkelstein so aptly put it in his book: “With all these holocaust survivors, who did the Nazis kill”? Now we know: NOT ONE, as affirmed by those questioning the veracity of the premise of the holocaust.

My Bubbe and Zaide (that would be Yiddish for grandma and grandpa) were left absolutely alone after every single member of their families were murdered in the Holocaust. If you need proof of the vicious reality that was the Holocaust, ask them.
I find it reprehensible and heartbreaking that the Badger Herald would not only publish an advertisement as dangerous as this one, but also tolerate the anti-semitic nonsense commented above. I am absolutely positive that my Bubbe and Zaide would feel the same, if I weren’t too embarrassed to break their hearts with what is currently transpiring on my college campus.
The Jewish community has a responsibility to defend themselves and their history in order to make sure nothing like the Holocaust ever happens again. Never again. However, I find it disgusting and unnecessary that we would be forced to do so on our own college campus, where we come to learn and be part of a safe community.
I understand the importance of free speech, but there must be a line between supporting it and completely alienating a portion of this campus’s student population. Stirring up anti-semitic thoughts, comments, and discussions is dangerous and damaging. Thanks, Badger Herald and all of the hateful deniers above.
Never Again.

This is absolutely ridiculous. There is no justification for these actions. Completely ridiculous. No matter what you say, there is no reason this ad should be in a school newspaper. Free speech has a limit when it comes to a college campus with a population of jewish people.

In HdC’s post above the number .98558 should read .958 to the power of 58. The symbol for “power” got lost in the posting.
It is strange that not one of the whiners and moaners here is able to refute one single scientific or forensic fact that refutes the claims of the holocaust.
To the poster above: You succeeded, there never will be another holocaust since the last one only exists in diseased minds.

Tragic as that is, it does not compare with the case of Dr. Norman Finkelstein, who lost his entire families on both his mother’s and father’s side during the holocaust, see his speech at Univ. of Waterloo on YouTube where he describes this horror. But, the truly amazing thing is that he was born in 1953 ! Beat that, if you can !

Freedom of speech does not, nor has it ever, defended lies. Holocaust deniers are liars. End of story. How can you even equate this with the 911 controversy. That is a conspiracy theory which is unprovable; therefore, not necessarily a lie, not necessarily the truth.
You printed their website in a commercial venue, versus your op ed page. Since when does a newspaper need to advocate for any group in the name of commercialism? Had this group been petitioning for a right to parade, they’d have been granted it; but as a paper in a commercial interest, you had no reason to give them voice.
Slander and libel are against the law. The only way to stop the notion that the Holocaust did not happen is to not give them any voice. What if the web site were to run malicious, known lies against the President? Or your child? Would you sell the ad then?
This is an embarrassment to your newspaper. Your job here is to say “NO MORE” will I contribute to the lies and myths that the Holocause did not happen.

To holocaust believers,
I have carefully researched this event called the holocaust for the past 7 years. Why? I was told by two people who have Ph.D degrees, the holocaust was a scam mostly for financial gain. I had never heard that idea before. I began to study the holocaust to prove these Ph.D level deniers were wrong. To my utter shock, I found out most of the proofs of the holocaust are based on hearsay evidence. As I studied more and more, I found it odd that persons who were doubting this event were being beaten, locked up in prison and even sued. I worked hard to uncover the truth. It was difficult to get answers from professors of holocaust studies. They would say I had a secret agenda. They never told me what it was! I did get lucky with a few well known holocaust professors but when I asked a question, they would create a new story about an established event, one which nobody ever told or wrote about. One which contradicted the eyewitnesses. I have come to believe the holocaust is mostly a USA approved myth which provides a deflection of WW2 war crimes carried out by America, Britian and Russia against Germany and its civilian population. It provides Israel cover to terrorize Palestinians. And it provides a huge river of money to holocaust promoter groups via reparations.
As a Jewish man once said; if there were no anti semites in the world, Jews would have to invent them, as they seek to be unique by being a group under constant persecution. I have some some truth to that comment. After all, who was the Nazi who was stirring the pot in Skokie, Illinois in 1978? Frank Collins was his name and he was Jewish.
There is absolutely no hate involved in holocaust research. On the contrary, there is plenty of venim directed towards those who research this topic and the reason seems obvious to me. The allegations of a planned gassing program to kill Jews is false. If the US Army had found 500 bodies that had Zyklon-B in them, the issue would be settled. But that never happened. No poisoned bodies, no mass graves, no photos, insufficient coke to cremate 1,500,000 Auschwitz victims, and on and on.
The burden of proof remains with the people who make these claims. Show me proof. I have found no proof of this event as alleged. For the record I am not a member of any group nor was I ever a member of any group. I am not German and oppose Nazism. I have no vested interest in this research either way. I began my research trying to prove there WAS a program to GAS 6,000,000 Jews and I have discovered just the opposite.

Here is why the holocaust is one of the most important issues of out time, and why it needs to be fully invested by impartial persons isolated from Zionist pressure.
The holocaust was used to blackmail the world into supporting the creation of Israel on Palestinian land.
The Palestinians have paid with land and lives. Europe and the US have paid trillions in reparations.
We’re now engaged in a phony ‘war with Islam’ to support the continued existence of apartheid Israel. This war can at any time expand to engulf the world.
This is not the correct explanation for the incredible destruction of WW II, and it is imperative for the future of the human race that the right lesson be learned from the war.
Hitler was an imperial warlord of the type that have led societies from the beginning, no better, no worse. The holocaust is in part pure phantasmagoria. The incredible destruction of WW II occurred because of TECHNOLOGY. Hitler killed many more millions than anyone before him because he could. The allies killed many more millions because they could. Technology gave Hilter and the allies incredible destructive power, which no society had had before, and they used it. It was inevitable.
That is the correct lesson from WW II.
For these reasons, the holocaust should be investigated and understood fully. Instead, as Bradley Smith’s ad implies, there is an absolute taboo on any challenge to the standard version of the holocaust.
Challenges to the holocaust story should be welcomed by academia, and answered with facts and research, not the idiotic ad-hominem attacks and vituperation that have characterized the universities response thus far.

This is a response to Hdc and Rudolfo:
Your “facts” are nothing more than made up numbers from fake historians like Bradley Smith and his colleagues. Any legitimate historian and professor would not only refute their statements, but refuse to hear them because they are so outlandish and false.
For example, Arthur Butz, a famous Holocaust denier, was banned by Northwestern University one of the most prestigious institutions in the world and his former colleagues called his claims of Holocaust denial “an affront to our humanity and our standards as scholars.” They also said to “leave our Department and our University and stop trading on our reputation for academic excellence.”
I don’t really understand your claims that the gas chambers didn’t exist. I personally have visited the camps in Majdanek and Auschwitz, and I can assure you several chambers are still standing. Those photos on holohoax101.com a true joke of a website show the gas chambers, where Zyklon B was siphoned into the chambers and killed hundreds, even thousands in a matter of minutes.
You want proof? What about the six million Jews that don’t exist anymore? In Poland at the start of World War II, there were nearly 3.3 million Jews. At the end? About 300,000, who couldn’t go back to their homes for fear of being murdered by their Polish neighbors.
Frankly, we don’t need to disprove you. The mere fact that you support a maniac like Bradley Smith is reason enough to reject your sentiments and your ability to live as a rational human being. I’ll stick with the countless amount of historians who agree with me. I wish I could believe that 6 million weren’t systematically murdered by the Nazis, but that simply isn’t true.
The only reason you would deny the Holocaust is because you’re a Nazi-supporting Jew hater who can’t accept the fact that we survived through the worst period of the 20th century.

The origin of the facts I quoted in my essay is exactly as I claimed: They were official publications from the respective governments. You can always verify this by contacting the governments yourself.
The 1.1 million current number at Auschwitz is from wikipedia; not the world’s most reliable source but I am willing to give it some credence for this instance; you can always correct me if I am wrong, here.
The mortality rates are exactly from the publication I quoted; you can google for it yourself as I have given the publication date and page number.

More for Jason Smathers to contemplate -
Famed holocaust scholar Robert Jan Van Pelt recently published an article in which he states …
“Ninety-nine per cent of what we know we do not actually have the physical evidence to prove … it has become part of our inherited knowledge.
I don’t think that the Holocaust is an exceptional case in that sense.”
Minus our ‘inherited knowledge’, this is the simple fact - THERE IS NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE for the holocaust.
No bodies. No gas chambers. No gas vans. No documents. No photographs. Nada.
Only testimony. Here’s a sample from the paragon of holocaust eyewitnesses, Elie Wiesel, and a Nobel winner to boot ….
“Babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as targets.”
All holocaust testimony, like the above,is pure crap.

In 2006 I called and spoke to a professor at an American University who taught holocaust studies. He said he was an expert onthe holocaust. He agreed to answer a few of my questions on Treblinka. The most common story told about Treblinka is 870,000 Jews were gassed at this location, buried, then dug up and burned on outdoor pyres.
Treblinaka is a small town in a climate as cold or colder than Madison with lots of rain and wind.
With temperatures sub zero in the winter it would turn these bodies into frozen corpses in a few days.
MY first question to the professor was; Where are the remains of these 870,000 bodies. His answer was to create a new version of events: the ashes were scattered in the hills near Treblinka. There are four problems with this lie. 1.) Cremated bodies do not turn to ash. They become 20 pounds of bone. 2.) There was never a request for any bone crushing machines to be sent to Treblinka. 3.) Treblinka is flat farm land. There are no hills near it. 4.) This is not the eyewitness version.
My second question was: How could the Germans cremate these frozen bodies with no ovens, no fuel and no wood. His answer made no sense to me. He said if you knew anything about German cremation techniques at the time, you would know the answer. He hung up with that answer.
In 1999, a team of engineers went to Treblinka and using Ground Penetrating Radar ( GPR) examined the entire 14 acre site. They discovered the ground was never disturbed. There were no mass graves anywhere.
In other words the legend of Treblinka is a lie. The same result has been found at Belzec, a 6 acre camp where we are told 250,000 to 2,000,000 were also gassed, but once more there is zero forensic evidence to support these claims.
This is the reason promoters refuse to debate the issue.

The official defenders of the Holocaust Cult
cannot invoke a single document proving the crime;
are unable to provide the least representation of the crime weapon;
cannot produce any proof nor even any evidence;
cannot name a single truthful witness
admit that their dossier is rotten (twice repeated), irremediably rotten and that it is bound for the rubbish bins of history;
admit the sources formerly invoked have revealed themselves to be not only rarer than was claimed but also unreliable;
admit hat the alleged traces of the crime are few and far between, and difficult to interpret;
concede that their side has used falsifications, misrepresentation, and artifice;
Concede that in support of their case there has too often been invoked a silly [sic] story, that of a decision to exterminate the Jews supposedly taken on January 20, 1942 at Berlin-Wannsee;
The foremost of their number, Raul Hilberg, now explains it all in a nonsensical way, by supposing the German bureaucracy boldly acted without any order, plan, instruction, supervision or budget. Thanks to an incredible meeting of minds and mind reading.
First in France and later in a number of other countries in Europe, the high priest of the Holocaust Cult have demanded special laws to silence their critics. When reason, history and science failed, these fanatics demanded policemen arrest their critics.

Our Daughter is a graduating senior at the school of Journalism at University of Wisconsin. She grew up in a loving home, with lots of family…parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins…Her Dad, a first generation American, worked endless hours to save money to pay for her to get a “good” education filled with all the wonderful college experiences that were not available to him. His childhood was not as happy. Growing up without Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles or Cousins, His parents, (our daughters grandma and grandpa), still alive today, both witnessed the murdering of their parents, their baby brothers and sisters, some were gunned down as they stood, thousands huddled together naked in front of a ditch…others were brought to the gas chambers while in Auschwitz, never to be seen again.
This week, we received some of the documents about the family our daughter never knew, as part of the stored documents recovered in Bad Arolsen, Germany. The names, numbers, dates and details of the deaths of her family members like poor Brianna, only 3 years old at the time and whom our daughter is named after, was gassed to death. You see, regardless how many people deny the Holocaust, one thing they cannot deny is that Hitler kept very detailed records and these records are finally surfacing.

Holocaust historians have recently discovered Germany ran as many as 20,000 concentration camps in the region it occupied during World War Two.
To carry out the alleged planned genocide of 12,000,000 the Germans allegedly selected 6 camps to do the job. Three of the camps were small train depots, less than 10 acres in size.
In America, nearly every single self identified holocaust survivor claims they survived the biggest killing factory of them all, Auschwitz. Second generation and even third generation holocaust survivors usually cite Auschwitz as the place their relatives met Dr. Mengele and got gassed.
So what of the other 19,999 camps? Can any high school kid name a camp besides Auschwitz?
What adds more confusion to the story is the most famous holocaust speaker today, Elie Wiesel, forgot to mention the main purpose of Auschwitz in his first book. He spoke of huge pits of fire where humans were burned to death. Gas chambers are not mentioned! Auschwitz was built on a swamp and has a 30 cm water table. There were no burning pits of fire. Recently declassifed US military overflights of the camp prove this to be the case. opps. Later editions left out the burning pits and added gas chambers.
and so it goes.
Early Treblinka ‘eyewitnesses’ or survivors said Jews were steamed to death. The second method of death at Treblinka was to have hundreds of jews packed into small rooms and a device sucked all of the air out the room.
I am sure the memo read something like this: ‘Adolf wants the air sucking machine used as a 5 cent bullet will be too expensive’.
In short order both of these alleged killing methods were discarded as fabrications, only to be replaced by diesel gassings from a captured Russian sub. Yep, I am sure it worked that way.
IP hash: b0d12f86
And so it goes…
Reading the comments here reminds me of what was written leading up to the Holocaust. It makes me think people do not change, for after all anti-Semitism is man’s oldest prejudice. The Holocaust deniers are the latest permutation of this sadistic personality type. It is clear they take pride in their stinking, seething, vileness just as the SS murdering thugs did.
Two days ago UW/Madison’s Chancellor tried to inject some decency into this debate, but as I expected her efforts came to naught. She is a role model for those willing to hear her message, but sdaly it is clear there are many who have no interest in what she has to say, and for which only actions will make a difference. At the time I suggested that this situation will only escalate, and it appears this is exactly what is happening. I predicted her words would fall on deaf ears.
At the time I also predicted that the likely outcome will be that UW/Madison will start seeing activity identical to what is seen at York University in Canada where Jews have been physically assaulted, or what we are seeing at UC/Irvine where invited speakers who advocate Israeli interests are shouted off stage, and are not afforded the luxury of even having their opinions heard.
Of course this is also reminiscent of what was seen in Nazi Germany, where university campuses were one of the breeding grounds leading up to the Holocaust. It is my opinion that the administration is in fact complicit in this by creating an environment where this situation exists and even flourishes.
Until the administration takes strong actions this situation will likely only get worse. Violence —and make no mistake about it, this includes verbal violence—begets more violence. Speaking for myself I hope the administration is held accountable if this escalates to the point where criminal acts take place, for ultimately it is the administration which allowed it to take seed and to flourish as it has.

I don’t doubt that her relatives died for a varity of reasons such as typhoid which was rampant.
The incessant bombing by the allies of everything that moved curtailed the transportation of medical supplies without which the German personnel suffered also.
You should know that the “gas chamber” in Auschwitz that is shown to the unsuspecting public was built by the Soviets after the liberation.
There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever of any German homicidal gas chambers. This was proven in a court of law during the Zuendel trials in Toronto, Canada, in two separate court cases during the mid and late 1980’s.
Zuendel was acquitted by the Supreme Court of Canada.

By accepting an ad, a paper makes an implicit claim for the legitimacy of the product sold. In most publications, a disclaimer separating the content of the ad from the body of the paper is made explicitly. That is not the case here. Of course, most papers wouldn’t accept an ad from a holocaust deniers, because they are aware of libel laws and editorial ethics, which is clearly not the case here. WHY PEOPLE WANT TO DEBATE THE HOLOCAUST.
‘Holocaust” means to burn to ashes the entire person (holo: whole; caust: to burn, such as cauterize, caustic, etc.) It literally means to cremate a person alive. The human body is 70% water, and it takes many many hours to cremate a person and reduce the body to ashes, and requires very high temperature. Even assuming the Judaists (who imagine they are “Jews” but actually are Europeans/Khazars whose ancestors converted to the Judaism) were cremated alive (holocausted) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 10 at a time at Auschwitz, and for 5 years non-stop (= for the entire length of the war) and it took 2 only hours to “holocaust” each (the highest speed cremation), only at most (24/2)10365*5 = 219,000 could have been holocausted. No such cremataria have been found and most Jews have backed away from the fire lie years ago, making the term “holocaust” a lie on its face. The Judaists claim that they were killed in Hitler’s “gas chambers” so they must have been “hologassed”, not “holocausted”, making the term holocaust contradictory to their own “gas chamber” stories. In essence, the Jews are denying “holocaust”. Also:
There were only 1.5 Million Jews in the countries Hitler controlled, and 3 million claim to be “Holocaust survivors”, then how could 6 million Jews have died?
If Hitler wanted to exterminate Jews, why would he just not order them shot, instead of arresting each one and transporting the millions far away to Poland?
There is little or no forensic or physical evidence supporting the “Holocaust” (such as no large cremataria).
The Auschwitz official records (recently released by the Russians) report only about 100,000 deaths there.
There has never been found in the tons of documents seized any order signed by Hitler ordering mass extermination of Jews.
The signs at Auschwitz which initially claimed 4 millions Jewish deaths was then replaced with another sign claiming 2.6 Million.
The Red Cross visited Auschwitz during the time period (and Hitler allowed them to visit Auschwitz) and in the Red Cross WWII report it found no evidence of genocide. Churchill’s book “Second World War” and Eisenhower’s WWII book also make no mention of “gas chambers” or “genocide” of Jews.

charles wrote: ” No event in human history has been studied as thoroughly and carefully than the Holocaust. Thousands of thesis and dissertations papers have poured over all of the evidence, from anecdotal testimony to captured German war documents. Virtually every historian with a PhD in European History agrees that millions of Jews were systematically exterminated by Nazi Germany. One can no more revise this fact than one can revise the existence of gravity. Nazi concentration camp records prove that it was carried out.”
I disagree. No other event in human history, to my knowledge, has sought to silence those who offer forensic evidence, that proves the contrary. Any professor employed by a university who dares to question this period of history and the numbers of Jewish deaths will be summarily fired. If they hold tenure they will be the target of harassment campaigns and protests. Professors I have talked to agree this subject needs to be revisited, but dare not speak those opinions in a public forum. Captured Germans documents provide convincing evidence not one Jew was ever gassed in a planned program of extermination using cyanide gas. This is the reason those documents are not made public. Present day falsifiers of history ignore the cause of death on German issued death certificates, (from the 1940’s ), and summarily declare those who died from old age, typhus or other illnesses were gassed, but offer no evidence. American Army Patholgist Dr Larson and his team spent two years doing autopsies on those who died in the camps, and found not one died from poison gas. The facts remain, this entire story revolves on rebuilt morgues now called gas chambers, hearsay from those who were in camps, but now are selling a product or speech ( often times) and a legion of special interest groups who have a financial self interest in promoting as many atrocity stories about Germans as possible. The real problem these promoters face is truth, which since 1960, has exposed 90% of German holocaust atrocities as complete fabrications. Just last yr, the 2,000,000 figure of Jewish deaths at “death camp majdanek” was lowered to 58,000 by those who are believers in the holocaust. That is not a typo, lowered from 2,000,000 to 58,000! In 15 years 2,500,000 have been removed from the Auschwitz death count and 1,942,000 from the Majdanek death count. That is nearly 4,500,000 fewer Jewish deaths and yet 6,000,000 remains a fixture of the modern day religion of holocaustanity.
These are some of the real reasons the promoters will not allow debate of this matter to be aired.
In the past, those persons who have rented conference rooms at hotels to discuss this matter have had those events cancelled due to massive pressure from outside groups. Why?
