In her Oct. 27 article “MG&E helping Madison ‘go green,’” Holly Hartung begins by saying that “Global warming discussions have moved away from debates about its existence.” I’m not exactly sure where she has been doing her research, but recent evidence shows more and more scientists are actually beginning to doubt the human effect on global warming.
Although it may be true that many people are committed to discovering more efficient means of obtaining energy and becoming more conscious of their individual decisions and their impact on the environment, I think it is a bold claim that there is no longer any debate over the existence of global warming. The fundamental problem in this new phenomenon that is global warming is the very fact people are not participating in these debates. We just watch “An Inconvenient Truth” and assume Al Gore was 100 percent accurate and we’re all doomed unless we somehow reverse our mistakes that have done so much harm to the environment.
We are educated college students — we should be able to do a little more research into these claims to obtain the full truth, rather than jumping on the global warming bandwagon. Discouraging people from debating these issues and seeking out additional information is dangerous, because it hinders certain information from entering the public spectrum. Using Al Gore and polar bears as evidence this problem exists presents a pretty weak argument and ultimately a narrow-minded perspective.
Sincerely,

Yes, and students should also question the ideology of environmentalism which drives the global warming movement.
Environmentalists have a long history of sounding the alarm based on flimsy and non-existent science. And their solution to any alleged problem is to shut-down industry. Their opposition against nuclear power is a good example. Attempts to ban chlorine worldwide, and the hysteria about DDT causing cancer, global cooling, etc…

i think that speaks for itself.

Says the glaciers are receding. Global temperatures are cooling. What gives?

Yeah, keep using CNN for info and be a no-nothing. I prescribe a dose of FOX or the WSJ.
Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 2003 issue of Nature magazine, “Although it’s tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think deforestation of the mountain’s foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests’ humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine.”
From the “we told you so” department, more agreement that Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth movie poster child for global climate change has nothing to do with climate change at all, and everything to do with local effects of land use change. This results in less wind laden moisture (via evapotranspiration) to deposit on the mountain and increased sublimation aka “freezer burn”. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/08/17/gore-wrong-on-kilimanjaro-snow-its-the-trees/

Halleluiah!… Global Warming Junk Science Dubbed a Religion
And on the eighth day God created carbon counting, and expensive solar panels and protected land for booming polar bear populations.
An executive has won the right to sue his employer on the basis that he was unfairly dismissed for his green views after a judge ruled that environmentalism had the same weight in law as religious and philosophical beliefs.

The ignorance shown by the comments is truly astounding. I sincerely hope that none of you are college students but just inbreeds living in your parents’ basements. There is absolutely no excuse for these opinions.

Yet another shining example of left-wing, open-mindedness. So much for tolerating differing viewpoints, huh?

JOURNALISTS WHO DON’T AGREE AREN’T “REAL JOURNALISTS,” and apparently scientists who disagree aren’t “real” scientists:
In the blame game, the Obama administration isn’t about to stop with Fox News. Instead, it’s moving on to lowly scientists.
Last month, President Obama gave a somewhat chilling, if somewhat ignored, speech on climate change at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He stated that any scientific debate about the magnitude of global warming is unscrupulous, decrying “those who … make cynical claims that contradict the overwhelming scientific evidence when it comes to climate change, whose only purpose is to defeat or delay the change that we know is necessary.”
Then, the president talked tough, saying, “We’ll just have to deal with those people,” language familiar to anyone who knows the vagaries of Chicago politics.
Maybe he should audit their taxes. The thuggishness continues. Hope and change!
