It is nothing short of pathetic and despicable when hate and fear are injected into a political race. Not only because it’s usually done by the side that lacks strength on the real issues concerning the electorate, but also because it turns the election from an effort to determine who is the most suitable candidate for the job to a battleground between “good” and “evil,” which only leads to a buildup of resentment between the two sides that far outlasts the election. And there is no form of hatred more destructive and long-lasting than religious hatred.
Yet it seems the campaign of Sen. John McCain doesn’t quite understand this. The candidate and his operatives seem determined to follow the same mindset of doing whatever it takes to win, consequences be damned. Beginning as early as the Democratic primaries and with no intention to quit until Nov. 4, the Republican spin machine has worked nonstop to portray Sen. Barack Obama as untrustworthy and to inject fear and confusion into the hearts of the electorate, especially regarding his religious views.
It all began with accusations that Obama is a closet Muslim who attended a Muslim “madrassa” school during his childhood. Even if we set aside the fact that madrassa means no more than “school” in Arabic, meaning pretty much everyone at this university (hopefully) went to “madrassa” during their lifetime, the accusation still has no merit whatsoever. The attacks continued even after a CNN reporter went to the school and found it was a secular institution where Muslim and Christian students took separate religious studies classes.
The last relationship you’d expect a closet Muslim to be attacked on that the one between him and his Christian pastor, but when it comes to the Republican playbook there is nothing out of bounds or too absurd to be true. In came the Jeremiah Wright controversy and a whole new series of slurs and accusations hurled at Obama, based on a few sound bites that all those who know Wright attest are unrepresentative of his overall views. It’s beyond me how a man who served in the U.S. Marines and was part of President Lyndon Johnson’s medical team can be accused of hating the America. I guess some servicemen don’t even deserve a minimal degree of respect for their service (see John Kerry, 2004).
Still, amid all of these attacks and accusations, the question beckons, is McCain free from any shady or unflattering associations with religious figures? And the answer comes back a resounding no. A clear example of such associations is pastor Rod Parsley, who McCain called a “spiritual guide,” and who proclaimed the United States was founded with the intent of destroying “this false religion” of Islam.
We haven’t even begun legitimate discussion of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s shamefully under-reported religious views . From her opposition to abortion even in cases of incest and rape to her stating she doesn’t know whether abortion clinic bombers are terrorists or not to her attempts to censor books from Wasilla public libraries as mayor, the evidence abounds that Palin has extreme religious views and is not afraid to use her position to impose them on others.
Now, the issue at hand is whether or not the views of Parsley reflect the views of McCain, and the senator denies that. Yet if a few years in a Muslim country makes you a closet Muslim, and if your pastor’s views are automatically yours, what is one to make of McCain’s denial? What McCain and his campaign must realize is two can play this game, but there will never be a winner. And the fact that the Obama campaign has refrained from using these tactics shows the maturity and poise it possesses and McCain’s campaign is losing day by day.
Given the aforementioned examples, one might view the climate of religious tolerance in the United States as bleak, but all is not lost. Far from it — in fact, the majority of the people of the United States have shown they are against such shameful displays of dirty politics. And their rejection is evident in both the polls and the words of prominent leaders on the political scene. What America needs is a president who will bring people together, who is above demonizing entire sectors of American society to win. The man who clearly fits that ideal is Sen. Barack Obama.

What America needs is a president who will bring people together, who is above demonizing entire sectors of American society to win.
Unless of course that “sector” happens to be right wing Christian Conservatives who happen to be Republican. They afterall are fair game when it comes to demonizing.
Hey Hey get with the program, when a white women has a crazy Evangelical religion = wholesome family values. When a other (Arab, Jew, Asian, etc…) has religious views that don’t appease the WASPy crowd, RUN HES DIFFERENT. For G-d sacks this country has had only one none protestant president, JFK. People think that political ideals are based in class and sub-culture, being American simply is not enough.
Amman, the day Muslims lay off of Christians, Jews and Hindus will be the day Muslims deserve equal respect. Until then, you’ll just have to get used to all the “paranoia.” It comes with the territory.
Ammar,
Barrack Hussein Mohammed Obama sat in the pews of Rev. Wrights church for 20 years, listening to and embracing the bigoted and racist hate speech spewed by that sorry excuse for a religious leader. While you attempt to minimize Rev. Wrights poisonous invective as not representative of his ‘true values’, the good Reverend has continued spewing his hate speech.
Mr. Obamams enthusiastic participation in the Rev. Wright church for 20 years certainly makes his judgement questionable. Of greater concern is Mr. Obamas denials that he had ever heard Rev. Wright utter such hate speech when Barry was in attendence. He lied.
Just as Obama lied about his intimate associations with William Ayers, the murderous Weathermen terrorist.
Just as Obama lied about his associations with ACORN, the perpetrator of voter registration fraud across this country.
Just as Obama lied about about agreeing to meet without conditions the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and Iran. The video tape from his February interview clearly proves he did. Obamas denial in the debate with John McCain clearly shows he lied.
There are many other examples that could be provides, but these are sufficient to make the critical point necessary. Mr. Obama cannot be trusted. It is not ‘bigotry’ to clearly demonstrate that Mr. Obama lacks fundamental judgement and is dishonest, as demonstrated by his own actions.
So, you see Ammar, while Mr. Obamas judgement is certainly questionable to many fair minded Americans, our greatest concern is he lies. He cannot be trusted to speak or act in the best interests of the United States of America because he always puts his own interests first. As such, he is unfit to be President of the United States of America.
Invictus Maneo
I won’t deny that some of McCain’s supporters are unabashed bigots, but from what I’ve seen the McCain campaign has taken a much higher ground that campaigns in years past. You bring up Jeremiah Wright, but when was the last time the McCain campaign mentioned his name? Obama would have been absolutely hammered for that association in the past, but McCain hasn’t made it a serious issue at all. McCain also seems more taken aback than anything at the “secret Muslim” accusations of Obama.
I just feel sorry for Sarah Palin whenever I hear her talk for more than 2 minutes…
You think their bigotry against Islam is bad? Read about BOTH major parties’ bigotry against atheists. I’m an atheist, and the recent stupidity of people such as the Republican Senate Committee, the fundies, Liddy “G. Gordon” Dole, Kay Hagan (who is proving to be little less of a bigot than her opponent), and Dumbass Daughtry the Howard Dean staffer makes me wonder if someone’s going to try to assault me one day just because I don’t have an imaginary friend.
Ammar, You claim that “it is nothing short of pathetic and despicable when hate and fear are injected into a political race”. But in my opinion you are doing just that when you claim that Sarah Palin attempted to ban books. While the information surrounding this claim is controversial, the fact is she asked how one could go about banning books, she never actually named specific titles she wanted to ban or made any attempt to do so. Personally, I do not want Palin to be the first female Vice President of the country, but the fact is if you are going to write an article talking about fear tactics, you should make sure you aren’t using them yourself.
You state “Beginning as early as the Democratic primaries and with no intention to quit until Nov. 4, the Republican spin machine has worked nonstop to portray Sen. Barack Obama as untrustworthy and to inject fear and confusion into the hearts of the electorate” This is because Obama IS untrustworthy and we should be fearful of him as the leader of this great nation. The “spin” as you call it is not spin at all, it’s the truth. Anyone who has a past like Sen. Obama is very suspect and should never be allowed to run this country. Informing the public of these facts is the responsibility of our media, if they won’t do it, we must pass the word. I for one am fearful of what our country will look like in 4 years if Obama is elected. You all have fallen for his wonderful promises, have you ever seen one thing he has done to prove he will keep these promises? NO. Wake up and smell the coffee, Obama is a dangerous choice for the leader of the free world.
Invictus, McCain lied to his first wife about loving, cherishing, holding through good and bad forever and ever… so that he could marry a younger, richer sugar mama.
Also, Invictus, shame on you for denigrating OUR troops in uniform who practice Islam. You should apologize for your hate-filled tone and ignorant rhetoric.
Furthermore, General Petraeus has just proposed sitting and talking with the Taliban. Go ahead, tiger, tell me you know ANY damn thing about diplomacy or military strategy, tell me you’re better than Colin Powell and General Petraeus. Even easier, how about you just say something that doesn’t sound like right-wing trash, say something original for once, something not cut and pasted from some whack job’s blog.
It’s amazing that the Dems have a nominee who couldn’t get a security clearance.
A Muslim complaining about religious bigotry? That’s just too ridiculous, given the number of people Muslims kill every day just for religious reasons.
Submit or Die - those are the only choices for the non-Muslims.
Don’t think Muslims are all bigots? Ask any one of them if you can date their sister or their daughter.
