Over the past few decades, it has been well documented and commented on that the conservative movement on most college campuses is better funded and more organized than its liberal counterparts. Organizations like the Heritage Foundation and Young America’s Foundation outspend and out-plan groups like the Center for American Progress’ Campus Progress on a year after year. Even the president of the Center for American Progress has admitted to wanting to shape his organization more like Young America’s Foundation.
We in the conservative movement pride ourselves on consistently surpassing the competition. YAF spends millions of dollars every year to subsidize student groups that want to bring the “rockstars” of the conservative movement (ie: Ann Coulter, G. Gordon Liddy, Karl Rove, etc.) to their campuses and puts on a weeklong summer conference every year with some of those same voices; Campus Progress does their summer conference in one day with, this year, one big name speaker (Ryan Gosling). After attending both conferences this summer, I was set in thinking: “This is it. We’ve finally got it this year.” And I wasn’t alone in those thoughts.
So, in one of the most vital years to our nation’s future, you’d figure campus organizations like the College Republicans that associate with these umbrella conservative groups like YAF and Heritage, would be on top of things and bringing our A-game, right?
Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth — at least here at the University of Wisconsin. This should be our year. We are the party that has found a candidate in John McCain that stands for progress. The “change” that Barack Obama talks about would simply put the U.S. back into the 1970s. We are talking about reform and issues that matter, and we have a real chance at both the White House and a majority here in Wisconsin. We can fight corruption on both sides of the aisle, undergo economic reform, secure our borders, protect the unborn and take care of ourselves and our loved ones… except we can’t do that here at UW because the right-leaning portion of the student body is seriously lacking excitement and willingness to stand up for those things in which we believe.
Any politician will tell his constituents the election is about them; but how can it be about us when we don’t seem to care?
Let this be a wake-up call to all of the conservative and moderate students out there who don’t want to see the United States turned into an ex-superpower. Unless we want a regressive, pandering politician who can speak well when he reads a teleprompter but has no idea how to run a country, it’s time to get our butts in gear. Sure, making hours of phone calls or dropping candidate literature in the rain may not be the most glamorous things to do, but it’s what we can do and what we need to do. That is why I’m asking you, not as the “chair of the College Republicans” but as a fellow American with a true hope for the future, to get involved. There are lots of opportunities out there, and the few of us can’t do it alone. If the presidential election isn’t your thing, we have plenty of great local candidates who need your help too — Brett Davis, Peter Theron, Alberta Darling, Terry Moulton, just to name a few.
This year is sure to be one of historical change — whether that change is for better or worse depends a great deal on you.
Sara Mikolajczak (WisconsinCRs@gmail.com) is chair of the UW-Madison College Republicans.

you blame the lack of excitement over Republicans over the lack of willingness of people to stand up for what they believe? why would anyone want to come out in support of the college republicans when they constantly write letters like this to the Herald.
instead of substantive debates, you just throws meaningless insults. instead of dealing with how republicans would manage Washington differently now, you pretend like the last eight years never happened. and the first conservative “rockstar” that comes to mind is Ann Coulter? that says enough about you.
I’m all for having a strong conservative voice on campus, but not one so completely petty and trivial.
how about a president who doesn’t want to run the country?
how about some freedom for a change?
Honestly, as a conservative i am sick of calling myself conservative with all of you BIG GOVERNMENT Republicans LOVING MOTHER STATE
Get your head out off your… and realize that people are SICK of PAYING FOR THE STATE
SICK of paying for DEATH
Get back to the discussion of the Role of Government.
I WOULD LOVE TO BE AN EX SUPERPOWER
heck, let China police the world for all i care, as long as they don’t come here and as long as I don’t have to PAY FOR IT
you’re STATISM is making me sick. the current Conservative movement has gotten so caught up in “Winning the next election” that it has forgotten what it stands for: Free Markets and Limited Government.
Get off your soapbox and back to the PLATFORM
oh, and do you see what McCain is doing? the idiot is going to lose, why won’t he fulfill his word and debate? He already said he knows nothing of the economy (like most politicians duh) so what good is he going to do there? this little move of his is idiotic.
Conservatives have traditionally been against expansionism, government intervention, and unnecessary foreign entanglements.
Perhaps it seems people don’t care because they are disillusioned with the current bass ackwords manner of the Neo Cons.
G. Gordon Liddy is a convicted felon who planned to have a journalist killed, and Alberta Darling(R-River Falls) thinks the US should run it’s economy and country more like China’s(and about your unborn argument, before she sold her centrist suburban milwaukee district out, she was on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin). All you are saying is “we have bigger and better corporate sponsors than the Dems, we should always be running this country”. No wonder their is class warfare with thoughts like these Sara.
Sara is absolutely right! We godly Americans need to realize that the mere tens of millions of dollars by which conservative groups like the Heritage Foundation outspend liberal groups like the Center for American Progress is not enough - we need those few of you left on campus to subscribe to our playbook of using every campus venue available to complain about not having any venues available! Furthermore, we need to stand strong for those pillars of American debate, like Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity, who are brave enough to tell anybody else willing to debate them that they’re anti-American for debating them. It’s plain and simple, folks, there’s no way the conservative groundswell can succeed on this campus unless the other four or five of you that believe in what Sara and I have to say stand up and fight! - Germain Q. Stemme
sara, you are crazy.
We can fight corruption on both sides of the aisle (like the Keating 5, Jack Abramoff), undergo economic reform (privatize Social Security and Medicare into the “stable” stock market), secure our borders (um, hasn’t McCain been against the GOP in the past on this?), protect the unborn (remember those years when you had all 3 branches under GOP control? YOUR PARTY OFFERS LIP SERVICE, DUH!) and take care of ourselves and our loved ones (with wild west vigilantism or deficit spending?)
The the last pages of the Republican party are being written…
A good start would be telling your guy to quit chickening out of the debates. Bawk bawk
For the record, Campus Progress works to bring the young people who attend our National Conference more than just “rockstars”—Ryan Gosling did speak at the conference this summer, but so did Rep. Keith Ellison, Rep. Linda Sanchez, John Edwards, civil rights legend Julian Bond, activists like Biko Baker and Heather McGhee, and prominent journalists from Newsweek, The Nation, and The Atlantic. We prefer to present conference attendees with substantive discussions about the issues they care about, not just “rockstar” vitriol provided by the likes of Ann Coulter. And as big-name speakers go, we’ve previously hosted Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi as keynote speakers at the conference—perhaps you’ve heard of them?
In the same week as the main National Conference day, we hosted a grassroots training day and a journalism conference—again, both are events aimed at equipping young people with skills, information, and networking they can use back on campus.
Campus Progress isn’t looking to merely dazzle young people with big names—we do some of that, but we’re more focused on developing the next generation of progressive leaders through substantive journalism, activism, and events. It’s the difference between catering to short attention spans and recognizing that young people are smart, progressive, and deserve programs that develop them as leaders in politics and culture.
Germain Q. Stemme is right! Let this be a groundswell of grassroots activism that finally engages people about the strengths of conservative thought! Sara has been a big part of this, showcasing the minds Michelle Malkin, David Horowitz, and Sol Grosskopf. I hope she can convince Ann Coulter to come!
Sara,
It is absolutely baffling how the chair of the College Republicans has no idea what true conservatism is. Your article is an insult to conservatives and your views are clearly of the Neo-Con movement, not traditional conservatism.
Just look at who you mention as your “rock stars.” Ann Coulter and Karl Rove!! They’re not even politicians, one is a neo-conservative hack who is popular just for being controversial and the other is not even a policy specialist, he just knows how to win elections. This is what you look up to? True conservatives should revere past leaders such as Reagan to put on a pedestal.
Its really unbelievable. You should look up “conservatism” in the dictionary. It has NOTHING to do with fighting corruption, economic reform, or protecting unborn babies. Those are all proactive hands-on patronizing government activites that conservatives have loathed for decades. Conservatism = limited government and free market. Neo-conservatism = highly statist system of spending more than we have, borrowing more than we can pay back, bailing out Wall St. in a manner highly consistent with Venezuelan socialism, advocating wedge issues such as gun control and abortion that really arent important, trying to legislate morality (the antithesis of a truly conservative ideology), and playing party politics to such an extreme level that it polarizes the body politic.
Sara, its really crazy that you represent the Republicans on campus. You dont even know what the party is about! If you want to attract followers you should advocate for the qualities of the movement (limited gov., free market) and point ppl to what the movement once was instead of advocating the partisan politics that weve become used to by insulting those that dont agree with you.
College Republicans will fail with you at the head of it. Its embarrassing.
I was under the impression YAF is listed as a hate group on certain campuses…
Adopt the Chicago Way - vote early, vote often, and remember, just because yer grandpa is dead doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get to vote.
Your energy, dedication and passion is admirable, Sara. Please consider taking your qualities and gifts into a career in Social Work where a face can be put our tough societal issues i.e. hunger, homelessness, hopelessness, illness, etc. When listening to Coulter and Hannity please ponder if this would be how Jesus would speak. Us Christians need to practice our faith as part of our lives, not just for an hour on Sunday. God bless and good luck.
maybe you should update your website…

i was on there two weeks ago looking for a way to contribute, but all I found were events and news from 2006.
How are we supposed to coordinate if there is no current information available regarding events and meetings?
9:17am:
Amen, amen, amen.
Sara is starting to remind me of Ann Coulter. No true position of power; just known for controversy and for thinking she is more important than she really is. I mean come on, she even had her own “scandal” last year. Grow up.
John McCain: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same
why the vitrol? clearly none of you know sara. she is perfectly intelligible on the values of the republican party among other things, she loves this country perhaps more than anyone i’ve ever met, she is an amazing kind hearted christian, she idolizes ronald reagan for his integrity and the inspiration and prosperity he brought to this country, and despite all of the crap you people give her she’s always happy and smiling. i really don’t understand why you all have to constantly rip on her personally. maybe it’s because you’re afraid she’s smarter than you and you’re going to work for her someday and that intimidates the hell out of you. next time all to question her ideas. oh wait. you can’t.
props to you sara! you are going places and leaving the dust of this silly town at your heels. don’t let the madisonians break your spirits.
Howard Johnson is right!
“maybe it’s because you’re afraid she’s (Sara) is smarter than you and you’re going to work for her someday” … can we assume this means that, as one of her employees, one will not be part of a bargaining unit and thus Sara Company will exploit every dime out of you while she enjoys life as a fat cat? Good Christain??? WWJT?
