Campus climate is changing. And I’m not talking about Al Gore-style climate change; this is change that actually exists. Political change.
Deep within the bastion that is the University of Wisconsin, students are starting to realize not everything force-fed to them in Madison is fact. What’s more, they’re starting to question these so-called truths and speak out about them. It didn’t happen overnight, and there’s still a lot of work to be done, but the truth is that the conservative movement on college campuses across America is growing, and UW is in the upsweep. If you find yourself questioning your peers when they tell you the surge isn’t working or light rail in Madison is a good idea, the College Republicans might be the place for you. If you’re interested in this movement back towards limited government, less government spending, a strong national defense and personal responsibility, the College Republicans might be the place for you. As an extension of the big tent party, we involve students who are self-proclaimed Libertarians to moderates and all the way to the so-called “neo-cons.” Come check us out. What can it hurt?
We’re starting off the politically-fueled fall semester with a non-political event — the 9/11: Never Forget Project. The project is once again co-sponsored by several other student organizations, community leaders and each and every student, regardless of political identification, is invited to join us in the construction of the memorial on Bascom Hill on the morning of Sept. 11. Our night ceremony will start at 7 p.m. and will end with a candlelight vigil remembering the fallen victims and honoring those who serve our country.
In an effort to help students prepare for the looming elections, the College Republicans are taking every possible opportunity to register and educate voters. Much of this voter education will take place through a series of bipartisan town hall-style meetings with the College Democrats. Official details are still being worked out on this project, but if you have questions on any of the number of topics that will be covered, I encourage you to come and hear what both sides have to say on the issues. College Republican meetings until Nov. 4 will focus on a number of other campaign related issues, from national to statewide to local and campus issues. Before going to the polls, learning where you stand on the issues is the most important thing you can do.
Politically, this is the biggest year and most important election season our generation has ever seen. Many of us will be voting for our nation’s highest office for the first time and many others will cast their very first ballot altogether. If you want to get involved or simply want to check it out, I encourage you to stop by. More than that, this is a time for learning. Even if you don’t change your Facebook to say “very conservative,” you’ll know both sides of the equation. Knowledge. That is what’s really valuable.
Sara Mikolajczak (WisconsinCRs@gmail.com) is chair of the UW-Madison College Republicans.

The College Dems’ column is 100% upbeat and positive. Yours starts off snarky and negative. I suppose this is going to be the tone this fall.
The only problem is that facts have a notoriously liberal bias, so if you want to avoid liberal “indoctrination,” you’d be better off saving your tuition dollars and going to a school where they don’t care so much about education, like Ohio State.

As soon as you find a candidate who actually is for limited government, less government spending, and personal responsibility… I’m there.
Hi, Sara. You are so right. Liberals have controlled Madison longer than long enough. They need their butts kicked.
I agree. This year, conservatives should make a determined effort to fight the liberal fascism that pervades Madison. The last thing a democracy needs is more liberals who force their ideology down other people’s throats.
I try my best to resist liberal indoctrination, but those conservative chicks are just gonna have to start showing more ass. Conservative chicks will beat liberal chicks any day of the week. They shave their legs and armpits, for one thing. Liberal chicks are skanks, and who wants to be stuck with a skank?! All those ugly tattoos and nose piercings-BARF!!
Bob Barr in ‘08!
Sara is BACK?! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?! YES!!!
Sara….do you even like Madison? I mean, what with all the force-feeding and liberal ideology. The democrats on campus certainly don’t seem to be force-feeding me any information…oh but they do offer it when asked, along with hope and unity. Maybe the republicans would have a better time getting their doctrine heard if they offered the same things instead of fear, negativity, and a lack of interest in protecting basic human rights
And if you are a liberal minority, you can be a known thief and still be Senior Class President!
Liberals suck! Time to take back Madison…the way it was before the 60’s.
Before the almighty and ineffable God Brack Hussein Obama and in the presence of all His minions, who are the True and the Original gods, I, (state your full name) renounce any and all past allegiances. I renounce the false Judeo/Christian god Jehova, I renounce his vile and worthless son Jesus Christ, I renounce his foul, odious, and rotten holy spirit.
I proclaim Barack Hussein Obama as my one and only God. I promise to recognize and honor him in all things, without reservation, desiring in return, his manifold assistance in the successful completion of my endeavors.
Hail Hitler.
I think liberals should be run out of town. I’m sick and tired of listening to their BS about those stupid worthless Palestinians, and the way they bash Jews and then deny that they’re anti-Jewish.
If you love freedom, grab a hippy and kick his/her ass.
Two points:
Knock off the Hussein crap. He’s not Muslim, he’s just liberal.
Facts are neither liberal nor conservative; it’s just that some people on each side choose to ignore them whenever convenient.
“facts have a notoriously liberal bias”
BS, the media has a liberal bias. The facts are very conservative - they don’t say one thing today and the completely opposite thing tommorow.
How can you be the big tent party Sara when your base has been dwindled down to mid aged straight white males?
4:10pm: Who cares what you think! Obama is a closet Muslim and I’ll never trust him. I also will never trust a Democrat or any other liberal after the tire slashings in Milwaukee. I no longer support liberals or their agenda. I have always hated conservatives as well. That is why I am voting Libertarian from now on. Liberals can stick it if they don’t like it.
All liberal profs should be dragged out to the quad and beaten to death. Academic freedom my ass! It’s the ones who scream for it that abuse it the most, especially when people who disagree with them try to exercise those same freedoms.
Liberals, what a joke!
Yet another poorly written piece by you. I say this, as an objective viewer, your writing is absolutely awful and shameful.
Certainly there is someone else in College Republicans who can write better than this…
5:18. This is probably the most well written I have seen the CRs do. And I doubt the entire column is written exclusively by the chair. Why are there so many comments on this, anyway?
“All liberal profs should be dragged out to the quad and beaten to death.”
Isn’t that just like a David Horowitz clone — you can’t win a debate on the facts, so you threaten death to anyone who opposes you. Real classy, just like Falafel Boy.

F* off! Not all straight white males are conservative, buttmunch. And not all conservatives are straight white males either. Just look at how many Asians and Latinos voted for Bush and will vote for McCain.
Yeah, just keep on alienating as many of your fellow liberals as possible and see how well your fave candidates do in November. And I don’t see many protests around Madison these days, like there were in the 90’s. Don’t seem to have much of a following yourself now, do ya?
I’ll resist liberal indoctrination in the best way possible: keep voting straight-ticket Republican.
Ahh… how I’ve missed the classy editorial comments. You guys make me smile every day. Hehe, buttmunch.
“Ahh… how I’ve missed the classy editorial comments. You guys make me smile every day. Hehe, buttmunch.”
Translation: “You’re my kind of people! Man alive, how did I ever make it through the summer without a chance to participate in a little intelligent discourse with fellow academians…insofar as the discourse could be said to be intelligent.
Sara, why do you even attend UW? Perhaps a prim private school perhaps with Protestant, WASPy leaning would have been a better choice. By the by, isn’t this anti-indoctrination essay ironically indoctrinating on its own? That was a rhetorical question.

Yes indeed, that is the best way to ensure that public education sucks.
8:24am, you apparently don’t sound very tolerant yourself, unusual for a liberal. It’s no wonder the only places where you’re welcome are in large metropolitan ares. The smaller conservative towns simply don’t want to put up with any of YOUR bias. You and 2:43pm should be thankful you both live in a country that still cares enough about you to pay for your education, considered a luxury in many other countries.
So while you’re damning the country that has given you so much, you can also count the many untold blessings bestowed upon you…that is, until you find something with which to compare it. Your call.
First 30 comment column of the year.
“First 30 comment column of the year.”
Madisonians love to bitch. What can we say?
Let’s try for 60 comments before the weekend’s up. Takers?
I spent a week up in the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area after finishing the school year in June. Good gosh! Practically all the young liberals are living on the street! They were panhandling and looking like the sorriest bunch of unwanted puppies I ever did see.
I offered two of them a buck if they’d fill me in on their situation. They said they grew up in the region, but after the WTO protest and 9/11, young libs started getting the boot from employers, landlords, etc. Even fast food restaurants and coffee shops don’t let ‘em in!
I asked if it was because conservatives had taken over or something and they said “Oh no, this area is still definitely liberal, it’s just that liberals are trying to kick out all the activists and anyone deemed to be a left-wing radical, socialist, whatever. That’s why you don’t find any more co-op housing or food pantries in the area.”
That’s an oddity if I ever saw one. Liberals being ousted from communities by liberals who claim to be liberals but act like conservatives. I may be misinterpreting this scenario, but doesn’t it seem like Seattle is on its way to becoming what San Fransisco is now? A city filled with liberals only in name?
8:09 on 8/21: Most European countries PAY their students to go to school. One of my friends gets about 500/month to spend how he wishes just for attending college. On top of that, he doesn’t have to pay any tuition.
Ron Paul!
This comments section is dripping with fail.
But seriously, Sara, why are you so caustic?
“If you’re interested in this movement back towards limited government, less government spending, a strong national defense and personal responsibility, the College Republicans might be the place for you.”
OK, let’s break this down, folks. Do you really think wanting these things makes you a good modern-day republican?
Limited government, like the kind that wants to intrude on your personal life by regulating whom you can and cannot have relations with? Or maybe the kind that kind eavesdrop on your personal communications for any reason without notifying you or providing any means to challenge the action?
Less government, like the kind that spends billions every month fighting wars in foreign countries? Like the kind creating an umbrella Department of Homeland Security that’s so cumbersome and stuffed with partisan bureaucrats that it’s totally impotent?
A strong national defense, like the one we have now that has revolutionized Islamic radicals across the world?
Personal responsibility, like being able to choose what kinds of substances you put into your body, affecting no one else?
Yeah, I guess if you like THOSE kinds of things, the College Republicans would be perfect for you!
The comments section for this piece is disturbing….
And Sara, why so caustic?
wow. “worthless palestinians.” “closet muslim.” what the fuck? why are you all such psychos?
oh, and by the way - climate change IS actually happening. consult any scientist EVER. you’re an idiot.
as any scientist ever will tell you, climate change IS real. i don’t care what party you subscribe to, them’s the facts. so go read your ecology textbook and get back to me.
Female Dan Quail for VP!
Wow, so I now have been called anti-semitic multiple times in Madison for supporting the palestinians as well as the Israelis (albeit not the current Israeli government and military actions). What will my Rabbi’s think? Oh wait, despite the fact that both of them have parents that survived the holocaust they agree with me! Never again, means never again for anybody not just the Jews.
I think liberals and conservatives have both screwed up the country, which is why a growing number of voters have lost faith in them. No one is decidedly liberal or conservative anymore. They simply vote for the lesser evil.
Unfortunately, neither will heed the wake-up call. So it looks like we’ll be stuck with idiots running the show for a long, long time.
I hope I die before I get old.
yawn More terminal dumbass from the College Republicans and the Republicans and conservatives of Madison.
When you guys have facts supported by empirical information, then you can talk.
