I must say I am very upset with the obviously embellished article recently printed (“Broken windows, appliances lead to ‘worst’ honors” April 30). As a tenant also residing in the building in question, I must say that most of what Karley Gifford has said appears, to me, to be hyperbole in the extreme.
Patrick Corcoran, of Patrick Properties, is in no way unconcerned with his tenants, health and safety. Patrick has always addressed and solved any concerns I may have had, sending in a work crew — on average — a day later and has promptly followed up with a personal visit, phone call or e-mail to make sure the issue has been resolved. Admittedly, the apartment building is an older one; I, too, have experienced troubles with rodents, but, unlike Ms. Gifford, I understand that this is out of Patrick’s control. With a winter like the one we experienced, it is expected to have to deal with an issue of this nature.
I also think it irresponsible of The Badger Herald to completely disregard the possibility that the reported damage done to Ms. Gifford apartment was not, in fact, done by Ms. Gifford herself. Upon signing a lease with Patrick, he was adamant about the need to carefully inspect the condition of the apartment, documenting even the smallest concern. It seems to me that if the apartment was in such shambles when Ms. Gifford initially viewed it, she would have thought twice about leasing said apartment. I also would think The Badger Herald would have sought testimonies from the other apartment residents to ensure Karley’s portrayal of Patrick Corcoran was as accurate as possible, but alas, supporting interviews are lacking.
In my opinion, The Badger Herald and Student Tenant Union owe Patrick Corcoran an apology for the misrepresentation of his character and properties.

Welcome to the payroll, Cody

I think I just read talking points. Is this a press release?
Anonymous (May 1, 2008 @ 8:19am):
So Cody, how much are you getting knocked-off your rent for this steaming load of BS?
Anonymous (May 1, 2008 @ 12:29pm):
Rodents are out of his control? Just something you have to deal with? What a load of crap!
It's called an exterminator buddy. If I had rats in my apartment and my landlord didn't do anything about it I'd sue his ass.
Anonymous (May 1, 2008 @ 12:55pm):
I agree with Cody.
If you're stupid enough to sign a lease in such a shithole, you deserve to live there. I'd bet Gifford fucked that place up too - she even admitted that her 'friends' destroy things and leave their garbage around the house.
On the other hand, who would have ever thought the BH would publish a baseless and incendiary column?
Anonymous (May 2, 2008 @ 2:19pm):
To "12:55" - the column was not baseless and incendiary. It was reporting an event that happened on campus: the contest. It reported what was said, to the public and the press, at the event. It was not investigative journalism.

I don't think the blame goes to the Badger Herald here, it should go to the Student Tenant Union. THEY are the ones who ran the contest, chose the winner, AND held the press conference without even so much as talking to the landlord beforehand. DUH guys, if you are running a contest like this it is really best to check your facts before holding a press conference about this BS.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 12:15pm):
I have Patrick Properties as a landlord, and I can tell you that this isn't a load of BS. Patrick is the rudest landlord I have ever met. Not to mention, the first article said that Patrick promised to fix the apartment before she moved in, and obviously, he didn't fix it.
Anonymous (June 3, 2008 @ 4:15pm):
Cody is right. Patrick is a good landlord. And basic code of professional conduct for reporters dictates that the Badger Herald should have investigated the claims and allowed a response from Corcoran BEFORE printing the article. For BH to hide behind the sham "contest" is a disgrace to the paper (which, BTW, used to have very high journalistic standards).
