I am a student currently working on a final project in the Memorial Library. I am writing this in the middle of a school day, yet for some reason I am overhearing the booming bass from some party on Library Mall. Why is there a very loud party taking place on Library Mall during a time when many students are trying to buckle down and hash out their final projects?
Presumably, it is someone’s ill-conceived idea of a way for students to let off a little stress during crunch time. That would be good and well if it weren’t interfering with those students who are doing what students should be doing — things like studying for finals and writing papers. Unfortunately, it appears that this “party” is also an opportunity for the likes of PepsiCo to advertise their wares and unload samples of various chemical brews intended to wake us up to their product.
Many of us would rather not be on a campus serving as the advertising grounds for mega-corporations and blasting music in the middle of the school day. All I can say is that whoever thought this was a good idea clearly was not a student and did not have the educational needs of students in mind.
I encourage the university to reconsider these events as they stand now, or at the very least, hold them during evenings and weekends when they would be more appropriate. Also, having loud events next to two of the largest campus libraries at any time is probably not a great idea. We have places like the Union Terrace for these types of events.

There are tons of libraries on campus, go to one away from down town or study at home you crybaby

Wisconsin is a party school for undergraduates, first and foremost. If you want a quiet place to study, try someplace like the Law School library or the library in Social Science.
Wherever there are graduate students who have to pay their own bills, there are more serious students and peace and quiet. (Downside: There are no free Pepsi products around here.)

Give me a break. It's spring, and people want to enjoy themselves with a little outdoor fun. I'm sure you're in the minority on this opinion.

You damn kids get off my lawn!
Anonymous (April 30, 2008 @ 8:34am):
Why is it that when ever I'm trying to study I write letters to the editor? Maybe the Badger Herald and all newspapers should stop printing when its near finals so that no student will get distracted.

It probably would have helped if you weren't sitting by the glass doors next to the speakers. I didn't have a problem in the middle of the building. If you're so sensitive, there are 40 other libraries on campus.
Anonymous (April 30, 2008 @ 9:29am):
stop whining...these events are fun. choose to study somewhere else, there are only 30 more libraries on campus

I can only assume that you live in a hole if you've never heard of All-Campus Party. The events during the (single) week "party," like the Wear Red, Get Fed lunch that you are being horribly bothered by, are offered as alcohol-free ways for students to relieve stress near the end of a hectic semester. While All-Campus Party may not be educational, it certainly is planned for the well-being of students. Not everyone can buckle down and sprint to the finish like you without blowing off a little steam first (sorry, but we're human). If you're truly so bothered by the noise from the well-meaning events of All-Campus party, go study for one week at a library that is in another area of campus; there are plenty to choose from!

Get Over It
Anonymous (April 30, 2008 @ 2:20pm):
If you have a problem with the music blasting, GO TO A DIFFERENT LIBRARY! This campus has more libraries then some universities have buildings. Stop your bitching about a safe, alcohol free party for the students. Also, there is no "school day", only hours that you are in class. This isn't high school anymore.

oh you're such a victim... here's a thought, go study somewhere not in the radius of library mall!
Anonymous (April 30, 2008 @ 3:46pm):
i'm willing to bet you wasted more time writing this than being distracted by the all campus party
Anonymous (April 30, 2008 @ 5:40pm):
Served.

i guess what they say is true: "every party has a pooper." UW-Madison, Joseph Gossett is our party's pooper!
