I am not one to write letters to a newspaper; however, Friday’s basketball calamity versus Davidson calls for an exception.

We, as a state, need to call for Bo Ryan’s immediate dismissal. His continued ineptitude to advance Wisconsin, a team with more than sufficient skill, to the Final Four is unacceptable. How many years are we going to settle with a coach who preaches outside shooting when every team that competes in the Final Four is unafraid to penetrate the paint and execute an inside game? We were embarrassed by a far inferior-skilled Davidson team due to incompetent coaching. Naysayers will state that Mr. Ryan won the Big Ten tournament — so what? If you are content to be a No. 5 AP team, receive a No. 3 bid because the Big Ten is not respected, then lose to a No. 10 seed — thus contributing to a consensus that the Big Ten can’t compete against other conferences — great, stick with Mr. Ryan and his perpetual losing ways. Otherwise, let’s see a committee form to select a coach who can deliver a championship — something Bo Ryan is incapable of giving the unparalleled, devout fans of Wisconsin.

I watched Friday’s game from San Pedro, Ambergis Caye, Belize. Wisconsin was mocked by more than one hundred international travelers; replace Mr. Ryan immediately or face continued, unacceptable losses.

rooooooooooooflessssssssssss

this will be the world’s biggest flame fest, please, let me set the rules:

  1. It is fair to make fun of this guy for being a Madison reject

  2. It’s OK to remind him that we teach classes on how to argue; check them out

  3. .750ish winning percentage with above average talent….

I actually agree. The swing offense stinks and we are more than likely to lose to a team with one big scorer because Ryan won’t play a zone. Ever. It’s ridiculous.

I hear Bob Knight’s available

Dear J. Vernon Hale,

I mean this with all respect possible, you are an IDIOT! How could you possibly write this article?? The story of this season should be summed up as “genius coach leads mediocre unathletic squad to top ten ranking, Big Ten championship and the Sweet Sixteen.”

I mean c’mon! Look at the athletes on the teams that win championships and look at the players on our team this year. We did not deserve to achieve half of what we did this year. The factor, plain and simple, was straight on coaching and strategy.

It is clear, through this absolutely ridiculous, blasphemous, and ignorant piece why you, J. Vernon, did not get accepted into the UW-Madison. Putting your words in our paper just days after our season ends is completely unfair. The message is dead wrong and now people who read this headline in passing will think that you reflect the views of the UW-Madison community.

ATTENTION COUNTRY: NO ONE (save this idiot who submitted such a moronic article) THINKS THIS WAY!

Bo Ryan is loved and rightfully so; he is a great coach and instills strong values and virtue onto his players. I hope his tenure here is just beginning.

Mark Few, John Thompson III, and probably Bill Self should be fired as well. Losing or squeaking out a win over Davidson is unacceptable, I guess.

Or we could be happy with 31 victories and a coach that is a pleasure to watch and does things the right way.

You fire him and we’ll take him

signed,

Indiana University and every other program with brains

J Vernon get out of here with that Eau Claire smack. This is way out of your league. How can a community college alum like this talk this way about a school he’s even never visited?

i used to work at the golf course where bo is a member. he’s the shit. he’d always tip us well and chat with the employees, which beats the hell out of a lot of the other stuffy members.

I’m a 0% Badger fan, despite being a grad student here. My allegiances lie with my undergrad school, which was bounced in the second round this year. But even I recognize that Bo Ryan can outcoach just about anyone in the nation.

The only reason why you perceive that the Badgers had sufficient skill to make the Final Four is because Ryan coached them to have that skill. The team wasn’t that talented on their own; Ryan coached them to play solid fundamental basketball that won games.

The only reason Wisconsin has a tradition of basketball success is due to Bo Ryan. Before him, there was nothing. If Wisconsin is stupid enough to fire him, he won’t be on the market for more than 48 hours. A major college program with a better basketball tradition than Wisconsin would be glad to snatch him up as head coach.

Time to start an office bracket for how many times the “I go to Madison, and my mommy and daddy pay for everything, including my Escalade and North Face backpack, ergo I’m a superior individual” crowd will post!

Bo Ryan is one of the most underrated coaches in the country, and getting rid of him simply because the team didn’t beat Davidson is simply a bad idea.

The team played badly. There, I said it. They played badly and they got flustered and beat. That’s a problem with the team, not the coach. This team has consistently gotten better, with Coach Ryan to thank. I have no doubt that the team will continue to improve.

Bo Ryan must stay, and he will stay, despite your ridiculous arguments.

you douchbag. bo ryan is loved and will continue to be loved here in madison. he got a ton of national attention and respect last week. ESPN was saying he is one of the top coaches in the country.

1:30—

lollerz… you completely made my day.

Wisconsin is a team school, and a Wisconsin school, and it gets a lot of respect for that. We don’t have the recruiting strength that a school like Carolina has, and we don’t get big all-stars like Curry or Augustin. But some of us went to high school with our boys, and many of us have classes with them now. And that’s the point: they’re here for school, and basketball is something else they do; it’s not treated as their profession as it is at most other top 10 schools.

So boys, I thank you. We may not have gone as far as we dreamed we could, but we went further than many gave us credit for. Davidson was on their game this tournament, beating Georgetown and nearly toppling Kansas. They deserve everything they have accomplished, but that should not detract from our own achievements. We maintained bragging rights in the conference: Big Ten regular season championshp, Big Ten tourney championship, and we advanced farther than any of our conference rivals. This was the last season I’ll get the privilege of watching as a UW student, but I am looking forward to following all UW sports from outside Wisconsin next year. You truly make us proud.

i’ll never forget how we got outcoached against UNLV.

Hey Vernon: I don’t know about the calendar wherever you might be, but April Fool’s Day here is tomorrow…you’re a day early with this joke of an editorial opinion.

I don’t think this guy is safe in Madison anymore. The Badger Herald must have something against you man. This may be the most idiotic letter I have ever seen published.

No matter what anyone says, Davidson was a legit team this year…look who they knocked out of the tourney AND they probably should have beat Kansas on Sunday.

Bo does need to figure out how to have a bit more potency on offense though…

This guy is an idiot. Nobody picked this team to finish higher than 4th or 5th in the conference. We won the big ten title AND tournament in the same year for the first time in our history. And we were beaten by the better team in Davidson. Yes it was a tough loss to handle. Bo was outcoached, we played our worst game of the season. But there’s a reason Bo was nominated for national coach of the year.

How can you equate Bo Ryan with an entire conference? You are right, the Big Ten can’t compare to other conferences… Bo Ryan is still the shit.

PS. Wisconsin hates you.

This letter, besides being completely absurd and not even coming from a Madison Alum, is one of the most pathetic reactionary pieces of garbage I have ever read. Do you know the history of Wisconsin Basketball? Do you realize how horrible we were until the likes of Dick Bennett and Bo came along. I admit how dissappointed I was after Friday’s loss, but to have some trash being put into the opinion section calling for Ryan’s firing is even worse. Seriously, we had a great season and just came up short when many expected the badgers to barely make the tournament to begin with. I along with many other alumni were extremely proud of this team and its outstanding character. We have a great future, and that is because of Bo Ryan! Mr. Hale, I award you no points, and my God have mercy on your soul.

This guy is an idiot. Bo Ryan single handedly built our team to what he calls more than sufficient skill. Coming into this season, the badgers were tagged to suck. No one thought we had a chance to win the conference. However Bo Ryan built a team that took both the conference and the tourny.

This idiot needs to look at how many times UW has even made the NCAA tournament without Bo compared to the number we have made with him.

Without Bo our team would still be nothing. Next time before you write an moronic letter look into what your writing about.

You printed this letter one day too early. Tomorrow is April Fools’ Day.

Was this supposed to be published tomorrow, on April Fools’ Day? This guy is a moron.

Let’s not forget that Bo brought UW a basketball program, not the other way around. Even if we had a better coach, we still would have the same players, the same press, and the same stories. Wisco athletics from football to basketball have problems winning games. The point of the matter is that we have above average players and are told we can’t even make it to where we end up, no coach can change that.

I suppose this guy would call for Barry Alverez to step down too. (Since of course he didn’t bring a national champ. and he didn’t do enough for Wisconsin athletics) Are you serious?

Obviously this article is ridiculous, the writer is completely ignorant to the sport of basketball. Bo Ryan is an outstanding coach, one of the best. I have noticed that he is not the best at getting the team prepared for big games (tournament games). Dick Bennett was able to get us to the Final Four; Ryan has not. However, Bill Cowher was the same way with the Steelers. He couldn’t win the Super Bowl for the longest time, even though he got them there. He broke out of it though, and got his Super Bowl victory. The same will happen with Ryan. One of these years this team will surprise the whole country and win it all. He has consistently been ranked with the likes of Kansas, UCLA, UNC, and Duke with far less talent. And you can NOT say Ryan is a bad coach for losing to Davidson. Davidson was playing as good as anyone in the country. This article disgusts me, it was written by a typical crybaby who calls for the coach’s head at the first sign of failure.

The Herald kindly put this man’s email address at the bottom of his masterful opinion piece. Please send him your thoughts as well as posting them here so that he can see true stupidity in his words.

what an idiot.

Thank God for the strict acceptance policy of our Undergrad Admissions. It means this fool cannot get into UW-Madison. This article clear displays your lack of intelligence.

And to repeat whats been said earler to Bush….YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!!

is this a joke?

You, sir, are basing all of your information and anger off of ONE game. I must say that Davidson deserved to win they played a better game but I guess you just dont have the balls to handle that.

Bo Ryan is a great coach and a wonderful person. He is welcome to stay as long as he wants in my book, and I hope he does stay, for a very very long time.

…and i love how you blame the coaching staff instead of the players, the coaches aren’t the ones playing the game, THE PLAYERS ARE!!

You are an idiot.

Some good points. Brian Butch, a McDonald’s All American, never developed his inside game. I appreciate his ability to shoot from behind the arc, and the discomfort this causes opposing defenses, but he’s 6’11. We needed him against the smaller Davidson, and Bo should know that we had to keep banging away inside to get ours. The Davidson loss was disappointing, and there are plenty of things that could use some improvement. But Bo Ryan is a great coach, and I can’t imagine who we could find to replace him.
