Assembly passes on chance to effect real change

Our state Assembly had the chance to do something great this past Tuesday while addressing an issue of dire importance. They had the opportunity to consider Assembly Bill 157, the Wisconsin Safe Climate Act, which would require the state to sharply reduce the main cause of global warming, carbon dioxide pollution. However, members of our Legislature failed this test of history and courageously chose to block even its very discussion.

I call these men and women “courageous” because they committed this obstruction despite the 84 percent of Wisconsinites who favor state action to reduce the causes of global warming. Clearly, like our president, these civil servants are not intimidated by something as inconsequential as the will of the people. Their electoral future did not even provoke them to discuss the matter. Or perhaps they are merely so busy that they just do not have time to deliberate about what role Wisconsin, with our long history of progressive leadership, can take in preventing the potential annihilation of life as we know it.

Countering global warming is one of the deepest moral and strategic challenges our species has ever faced. University of Wisconsin zoology Professor James Pawley described it as an “overarching problem” which, if not handled properly, “could lead to the premature demise of billions of people.”

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has concluded that evidence of the planet’s warming is now considered “unequivocal,” and that the effects on our climate system could be “abrupt and irreversible.” Furthermore, a recent study from the International Institute for Strategic Studies has said that climate change “could have global security implications on par with nuclear war unless urgent action is taken.”

Yet why should these state legislators be the ones who decide what sort of efforts our country should take to prevent this coming catastrophe? It is the same reason why California, one of 16 other states to pass similar legislation, has filed a lawsuit challenging “the Bush administration’s conclusion that states have no business setting emission standards.”

The reason is this: In regard to global warming, our national government has surpassed both willful ignorance and criminal negligence, and has been moving toward a treasonous contempt for both our country’s and the world’s future. This contempt is illustrated by the three-month-old report from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which concluded that the Bush administration has “engaged in a systematic effort to manipulate climate change science and mislead policymakers and the public about the dangers of global warming.”

The report stipulates that our government has “censored climate change scientists,” “extensively edited climate change reports” and has “muzzled environmental administration staffers.” Our state Assembly follows in this legacy, in failing to stand up to a morally bankrupt policy of obfuscation and denial in the face of the most cataclysmic threat our world has ever faced — a threat that can be equated with global nuclear war.

Our country and our state Assembly are taking the chance that science isn’t real and that logic, reason and foresight need not be applied to issues important to powerful interest groups. This mentality was recently put on display by GM Vice President Bob Lutz when he declared that global warming is a “total crock of shit.” What I never understood about the global warming denial movement is even if there was not unprecedented consensus on the issue, and let’s say only a 10 percent chance that our entire species will be wiped out, isn’t that still enough risk to justify capping emissions? Or at least enough risk for a state Legislature to take the time to discuss what they can do to help?

Wisconsin governmental officials and citizens alike need to rediscover our state’s progressive heritage and take the lead on this integral issue. Waiting for the presidential election should not be an option, as it is simply too big a risk to trust bought-and-paid-for politicians and media figures to keep their word. This risk is evidenced by the Democratic candidates’ engagement in three coal industry sponsored debates on CNN — all events free of even a single question about global warming. Furthermore, a study by the League of Conservation Voters has noted that top political talk show hosts dedicate only 0.1 percent of their questions to global warming. They must have been too busy discussing lapel pins or something.

Now don’t get me wrong, the Wisconsin Safe Climate Act is far from perfect, which has lead Mr. Pawley to regret it isn’t stronger. However, it is a step in the right direction, and considering how few steps our country or our state have taken in this regard, any movement on the issue should make us all proud. I would certainly have been less repulsed if our state would have at least taken the step to merely discuss this issue.

Wisconsin has long been a bastion of progressive action, and it is long past time for our government officials to stop counting campaign contributions and begin worrying about the well-being of their constituents and the future of the world. If they continue to fail this great test of history and this basic test of moral decency, then it is up to us to ensure that we render their callous and cowardly legacies irrelevant to our state’s future by removing them from power.

Sorry to break in with heresy against the new religion of Global Warmism but there is reason to think that the Sun may have something to do with the climate, maybe even more than CO2.

Remember the Arctic Sea ice? The ice we were told so hysterically last fall had melted to its “lowest levels on record? Never mind that those records only date back as far as 1972 and that there is anthropological and geological evidence of much greater melts in the past.

The ice is back.

Gilles Langis, a senior forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service in Ottawa, says the Arctic winter has been so severe the ice has not only recovered, it is actually 10 to 20 cm thicker in many places than at this time last year. There is more ice in the Arctic this year than last, and Siberia, China, and northern Canada are covered in snow. Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.

Look out for Global Cooling.

Ice Ages are far more to be feared than warming. And I remind you, in the last Real Ice Age, Southern England and Belgium went from deciduous trees to a hundred feet of ice in about 100 years, according to lake sediments. That is a very rapid cooling indeed. And the ice reaches miles in depth in some places, like Wisconsin.

The last time the sun was this inactive, Earth suffered the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries and ended in 1850. http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/columnists/story.html?id=332289

Last month, Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, shrugged off manmade climate change as “a drop in the bucket.” Showing that solar activity has entered an inactive phase, Prof. Sorokhtin advised people to “stock up on fur coats.”

He is not alone. Kenneth Tapping of our own National Research Council, who oversees a giant radio telescope focused on the sun, is convinced we are in for a long period of severely cold weather if sunspot activity does not pick up soon.

The last time the sun was this inactive, Earth suffered the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries and ended in 1850. Crops failed through killer frosts and drought. Famine, plague and war were widespread. Harbours froze, so did rivers, and trade ceased.

Maybe a little actual science would be in order here, instead of a new religion.

Hate to break it to the deniers, but the global cooling excuse is a myth: http://www.usatoday.com/weather/climate/globalwarming/2008-02-20-global-cooling_N.htm

There never was a consensus on that issue like there is on THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING IPCC.

Acknowleding global warming is not a religion, it’s an acceptance that science, reason, and logic, are real.

Good thing the political elites of both parties continually represent the interests of Wisconsinites as a whole, or even their own constituencies… oh wait, they don’t, and they never have.

Sorry 11:07 but your link relates to the 1970’s - not to today.

Now that we have even colder weather than in the 70s perhaps new data should be incorporated into the super secret climate models of the Global Warmism High Priests:

“That was an unusually cold decade, especially the later years, across the Northern Hemisphere. In the USA, the winters of 1977-79 were three of the 11 coldest since the recording of temperatures began in the 1890s, according to climate center data. The winter of 1978-79 remains the coldest on record in the USA.”

Harry, Your article is based on multiple false premises embedded in your statement: “….require the state to sharply reduce the main cause of global warming, carbon dioxide pollution.”

1) Global warming is a hypothesis much in debate and increasingly refuted by rigorous analyses.

2) Assigning ‘carbon dioxide pollution’ as the root cause of ‘global warming’ adds another unverified hypothesis to item 1).

3) Assigning corrective action responsibility to the State Legislature for unconfirmed hypotheses not only wastes precious tax dollars and needlessly redirects limited assests, it’s just plain dumb.

Re-analyses of the data used by the UN-IPCC to support their claim that carbon dioxide (CO2)causes global warming has shown that to be untrue. In the many centuries long data set used by the UN-IPCC, close examination of the data shows that sometimes CO2 content went up before planetary warming did… and other times CO2 did not increase until many decades after significant warming had already taken place. To validate the hypothesis that CO2 causes Global Warming, increases in the CO2 content MUST occur BEFORE or concurrent with the increase in planetary heating. Re-analyses of the UN-IPCC data sets have shown this to be unambiguously false. The “Global Warming Caused By Increasing Carbon Dioxide” hypothesis is not supported by the data.

Take a deep breath… or a valium, if needed, and be assured that CO2 will not cause “the potential annihilation of life as we know it” anymore than hyper inflated, over heated rhetoric by editorial writers causes Global Warming. Castigating honest, knowledeable, well reasoned scientific analyses that refute the UN-IPCC conclusions as the bleating of ‘Deniers’ is the artifice of religious believers and those with a vested interest in sustaining the deceit. Urging state, national, and global action based on a false premise is the territory of fools.

The knowledgeable 9:17am post touches on the ‘Maunder Minimum’, a centuries long period in which solar sunspot activity dropped to much lower levels than we have seen in the last century. This protracted period of low sunspot activity exactly correlates with what was a protracted period (centuries) of colder than ‘normal’ weather around the planet. Note that this correlation of low sunspot solar activity to planetary cooling spans centuries. When sunspot activity finally increased again in the eighteen hundreds, the planet began warming up again. Good correlation between increased sunspot activity and global warming is established fact. Combined, they provide a scientifically reliable baseline for modeling the primary cause of Global Warming and Cooling: Our Sun. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone but the politcally motivated (Al Gore, the UN, etc), the financially motivated (those depending on Global Warming funding to sustain their trajicly misguided careers) or the scientific illiterate that the SUN is the overwhelming control factor for heating and cooling on our planet.

We have had a century and a half of planetary warming. Now Old Sol has once again nearly ceased spawning visible sunspots…. and we are having a colder than normal winter. It’s all natural and there is nothing the State or Federal Government, UN, Ghandi, or Barack Obama can do about it.

The Goracle is making a fortune on speaking fees, movie profits and carbon offsets - all in part due to the religion of Global Warmism.

Now THAT’S an “Inconvenient Truth”.

I’ll bet right now that, when the spring thaw begins, any flooding that occurs as this winters deep accumulations of snow and ice melt will be Heralded as yet another ‘Sign of Global Warming’.

See reference below for one of the increasing body of scientific analyses repudiating the “Carbon Dioxide Pollution Causes Global Warming” hypothesis touted by the UN-IPCC report. This will help your understanding of the topic. As the lyrics of an old tune profoundly state “If you believe in things that you don’t understand then you’ll suffer, superstition ain’t the way”. Set aside your ‘beliefs’ and learn the facts. That’s what you are supposed to do in college…… try it!

BURN THE HERETICS!

No Wait, that would increase the CO2.

Global warming?! Then why is it so gosh-darned COLD outside?!

By the way, I came up with that zinger by myself, it’s never been said before, it’s TOTALLY BRILLIANT and shuts down any libtard, and is backed up by indisuputable lots of drinking so it’s a FACT. -Germain Q. Stemme
