I greatly appreciated the article about Senator Herb Kohl, D-Wisc., ("Kohl, front and center," Nov. 6) in your paper. As you reported, Mr. Kohl has consistently supported educational funding on the Senate floor. I would also like to point out that Mr. Kohl’s support of education is not merely rhetoric delivered to his fellow congressmen; the senator puts his own money where his mouth is. Mr. Kohl’s organization, The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, grants scholarships to both graduating high school students and distinguished teachers. I, like a handful of other students attending the University of Wisconsin, am able to pay for my college tuition because of Mr. Kohl’s dedication to education. Herb Kohl’s support of both UW academics and UW athletics makes him a modern day hero in my mind. Wisconsin is truly blessed to have Herb Kohl as one of its senators.

Good for you.

The Kohl Foundation Scholarships are wonderful, but let's not exaggerate as to their importance: they are (incredibly generous) $1,000 drops in $60,000 buckets, and do not themselves "enable" anyone to pay for school, contrary to your contention.
