The article in Thursday's Badger Herald "Bipartisan support" by Keegan Kyle, misrepresented what I was trying to express during my interview with the author. When I said I was "disappointed in the troop memorial event," I was specifically targeting the use of the phrase “support our troops” on a banner at the memorial. “Support our troops” is a line of political rhetoric that has been used by the politicians in our government to connect caring for our men and women in uniform with a continuation of this war. Those who truly support the troops are actively working to end the war. This includes two key activities: informing the public about the realities in Iraq and supporting the men and women in the military who are refusing to fight both here and in Iraq. I agree that supporting the troops is a nonpartisan issue, as the Democrats and Republicans demonstrated together, but correctly supporting the troops requires an understanding of the reality the situation in Iraq — that being that our politicians intend to keep troops there, using them as tools to protect corporate interests in the region. Therefore, it is our job as American citizens in a democracy to actively work to end this war and get our troops out of Iraq. This is why I am a member of the Campus Antiwar Network.

Same old political rhetoric from both sides, and which are both a bunch of BS spouting idiots. The right wants to support the troops with flag waving, putting yellow ribbons on their cars, and counterprotests to the left. The Left as this person illustrates want to support the troops by bringing them home and protesting.

One has to ask, just how much support does either really give to the average troop? Having worked around troops for 20 years as one of them (which is far more time than ANY in a university probably have) I would think I am in A FAR BETTER POSITION than these dunderheads to give an opinion on what actions would REALLY offer support for the troops (which I agree is a worn out catch phrase).

First one has to ask what is the overall goal of the troops, which is to provide security and safety for America and it’s people period. No other reason for the military to exist what so ever. Now one also has to realize that no matter the outcome in Iraq, a stable, functional, working government supported by it’s people and visa versa is far more secure and safe for America and the world than what Iraq is currently experiencing.

Therefore to “support the troops” one would have to logically agree that the best way to do this would be to give them the tools they need to do their jobs both here at home and abroad. Yet you would never see the Left nor the Right do ANYTHING to accomplish this little feat one way or the other. So the point finally is to give a list of ways both sides can support the troops and what they should be advocating. As a matter of fact supporting the troops is a far cry from what either side advocates,it is not BRING THEM ALL HOME NOW as the left and the author of this article and CAN believes, nor is it let them Nuke Iraq as the Right believes.

Here are some ways to support the troops for both sides.

Advocate a greater pay raise.

Better health care.

Give them the best tools to do their job and protect their lives that MONEY can buy no matter the cost.

Advocate a RAISE IN TAXES to do the very thing above (In WWII America spent 30% of it’s GNP to win that war, in this one we spent barely 3%)

Advocate fuel and gas rationing (of course this would mean no mass exoduse in SUV’s and flights from college campuses when “breaks” are given in the school year)

Advocate a complete ban on new car production until the end of the war, and the American auto makers turn out up armored vehicles for military use instead.

Metal rationing for the production of ammo and said up armored vehicles.

A ban or slowdown on ALL immigration until the war is over.

Finally, how about advocating a DRAFT (ooohhhh he used a scary word for both sides of the debate) and finally get the “troops” both sides say they support in sufficient numbers to fight the war to begin with, afterall the ultimate form of support is imitation and neither the right or the left seem to believe actually joining the military would do far more to support it than any stupid song being sung at any protest the world over.

Seems to this “Troop” the best way to support them is to give them the tools to do their jobs, allow them to do their jobs, and THEN bring them home.

To advocate we support our troops Bring them home and cut off funding while there (which is CAN’s view) is like saying “we support our fire department” by sending them out with buckets of water to dump on a raging inferno while at the same time blocking their access to the fire to begin with.

So thanks for your “SUPPORT” guys on both sides we really appreciate it (notice the hint of sarcasm). Cause most of us in the military really SUPPORT our college campuses too (afterall you do ban ROTC at most of the bigger universities don’t you???).

SSG Ron Pritchett US Army

Ron Pritchett, the best way to support the folks that defend our country is to bring them home from Iraq and stop sending them overseas to fight wars for profit. Those troops are somebody’s mother, father, son daughter, etc. What the hell are we trying to prove?!

Really, does anyone care about “the troops?”

I thought this was about cheap gasoline. Two-dollars per gallon, please.

I could care less about the troops. They enlisted voluntarily. They knew what they were in for. They are getting a lot of $$$ in sign-on bonuses, re-enlistment bonuses, not to mention the new “quick-ship” bonuses, where they sign up without thinking about it first. They’re in it for the profit. I don’t want to hear any vets coming home and bitching about whatever raw deal they think they got. They’ll have no one to blame but themselves. It’ll be they’re turn to “go to hell.”

9:51, enlisting the armed forces is voluntary, everyone knows that. and whether they are in the US or in the middle east or any other place, they are doing their job and are very damn proud to do it. they wouldn’t be in there if that wasn’t the case.

“Here are some ways to support the troops for both sides…”

OR, go to a good university, make some social connections, get a good job in the private sector, and become a Republican. Either way is patriotic.

Which is why most troops hate college students, yeah they enlist to make money. What do you guys do but suck the hind teat of “mommy and daddy” till your 25 years old. At least they are making their own contributions to society. While college students bitch “something must be done” in every damned natural/man made disaster that befalls us, it is usually the troops out there making a difference.

Somalia college students bitched feed the starving. The military went in and did it.

Grenada the college students bitched come and save us and the military did it, same held true with students in Lebanon just last year.

Bosnia it was “stop the genocide” from the Ivy league colleges. The military handled that one as well.

Personally I can’t think of ONE DAMNED THING college organizations have done to make the world a better place when compared to the US military.

Oh wait some went to New Orleans to help rebuild AFTER the military got the crime under control.

Well I guess it is a good thing that the troops are volunteers or else you might find your backsides in Iraq or the next war in the form of a draft. So instead of bitching “they are volunteers” maybe you ought to think them for keeping you fat dumb and happy in college instead of a foxhole.

hey dude,

you might want to verify what the banner said at the memorial. “tribute to the troops” is not “support our troops.”

How is this called a “war” anyway? I thought congress had to declare war. We should call this “bilateral target practice for oil.”

Congress, we’re still waiting for that war declaration. Maybe declare “war” on poverty, drugs, and terrorism while you’re at it.

Let’s stop throwing around words like “war” so casually, especially when our own congress shirks its constitutional duty.
