College Republicans’ game racist, uninformative

Imagine this: You're walking through Library Mall and spot a group of eager undergraduates approaching the Humanities building in hot pursuit of something. Upon second glance you realize they are not looking for something but rather someone, a student just like you or me. But this one is wearing a nametag reading "illegal immigrant." The rest of the students are looking for him and, if they succeed, are guaranteed to win money or maybe even a gift card.

We should all be thankful that, unlike universities such as New York University and the University of Michigan, this very scenario has not occurred on our campus in Madison — yet, at least. But we cannot afford to ignore these incidents altogether and must seek to understand exactly what this game is and why some students are so willing to play.

The game, called "Catch the Illegal Immigrant," is the brainchild of the College Republicans and involves exactly what I described earlier: a hunt for a student wearing a nametag proclaiming his or her illegal immigrant status. It serves to incite excitement in the students searching and anger in those who find the game racist and just plain wrong.

According to The New York Times, the most recent game was played Feb. 22 at NYU, where the number of protestors far exceeded those actually participating in the game. Video footage available on YouTube shows swarms of reporters with cameras and microphones, infuriated and likely embarrassed students and faculty members, as well as campus leaders like College Republican member David Laska fighting for camera time to defend the game. When asked by visibly enraged faculty members why his organization resorted to such outlandish ploys for attention instead of holding debates and meetings like their counterparts, the College Democrats, Laska responded, "Because nobody shows up."

Is this really the reason behind this obviously racist game? Were the College Republicans so down on their luck, recruiting students to attend their meetings, that this game was the only way to do so? Laska and his College Republican cohorts claim the game is just an innovative way to get students talking about important issues facing our generation.

And as for everyone other than the few College Republicans involved? Students showed up in throngs with signs protesting the game's singling out of immigrants, school administrators voiced their disappointment with the College Republicans' behavior and even political leaders weighed in. The Associated Press reported Feb. 27 that Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean urged the Republican National Committee to denounce the efforts of these College Republicans. While the RNC was quoted as agreeing the game was "both egregious and offensive," it also said it has no control over what College Republicans choose to do.

And it shouldn't. Like any campus group, the College Republicans have — and rightly so — free reign to do pretty much whatever they want, thanks to a little thing called freedom of speech. But does free speech still apply when those speaking are outwardly offensive and arguably racist? Of course. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

Even if we take at face value the claim by College Republicans that they are simply trying to get the usually uninterested and unmotivated college student crowd to care about an important issue such as immigration, the way in which they did so was wholly inappropriate. It is a shame to see members of student organizations using their favored positions to get media attention for a tasteless game rather than educating students about the actual issue. The game was devoid of any real information, making it hard for an outsider to understand how, exactly, the College Republicans expected informed dialogue to emerge at all.

Freedom of speech undoubtedly bars any legal action against this group, but it does not let university administrators and faculty members off the hook. They must continue to encourage College Republicans — and all student groups for that matter — to find other means of promoting dialogue. They must make it clear why this game is more offensive than it is educational.

What's the phrase again? It's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt? Well, game over.

"Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada" (Everything for the Race - Nothing outside the Race) --what is that if not racism?

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 7:29am):

I can't wait for the Democrats to start playing the "catch the rich, white, cracker, honky, closet homosexual, inbred, wanna-be cowboy, prick Republican" game.

"They must make it clear why this game is more offensive than it is educational."

You could have tried that in your article.

What does illegal immigration have to do with race?

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 10:05am):

I wouldn't put it past our own college repulicans to play such a racist and xenophobic game.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 10:40am):

i don't know any college republicans here so i wouldn't assume they would ever host this game. but if they want to protect the integrity of the ideology and values they proclaim- they should denounce the actions of their fellow CR's around the country. that game is inexcusably white supremist and oppressive.

"I wouldn't put it past our own college repulicans to play such a racist and xenophobic game."

Yeah, who do they think is going put up my drywall, roof my house or mow the yard?

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 11:02am):

Can someone define exactly which race comprises "illegal immigrants"?

Behold...the latent racism of the left.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 11:04am):

Racist? Obviously? Illegal Immigration has to do with people coming across our borders illegally, taxing our systems, hurting our economy (yes HURTING it), committing crimes, smuggling drugs, and possible terrorist connections.

Quick lesson 101, to be RACIST it has to do with RACE. Typical Liberal...claim racism when it is obvious that you are the one who immediately thinks about a person by their race...

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 11:05am):

Why don't you write about all the people that came here legally and pay taxes as well as work hard for a living? How about the people that came over here on boats and practiced their English to take the citizenship test? I'm a 1st generation immigrant, and there is a right way and a wrong way to remain in this country. An illegal immigrant can be from anywhere in the world; race has nothing to do with it! If Canada had a low minimum wage and poor government structure, Canadians would be running over here too. Try doing research before you write an article. Get your own opinion and stop stealing other journalists' preconceived notion that everything about race, because it's not!

I just assumed it was before I finished the article

I think the game is a catchy, innovative, and original idea that should be tried at this campus.

Is it really an "abnormal" fear of foreigners if they actually are intent on invasion and conquest?

Ever hear of La Reconquesta, Mexico's Dream of 'Retaking' the Southwest.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 12:38pm):

To the first poster: Obviously, you have little experience with the Spanish language. The first sentence of the translation you provided would require "para" in the place of "por." "Por" in this context is closer in context to "by way of." And while "la raza" translates literally to "race," its colloquial meaning comes closer to "population" or simply "people." Thus, the phrase you provided is really just functionally analogous to "united we stand, divided we fall."

Considering the administration's answer to illegal immigration is to build a fence along the Mexican border (not to mention encroaching on Mexican soil), it is the right that has an incredibly racist view of immigration. No one talks about asians or eastern europeans when they talk about illegal aliens, all the graphics show Mexicans walking through a river.

So, the BH has now called both a College Democrats and College Republicans racist. WHERE SHOULD I VOTE? I AM TOO CONFUSED! HELP ME TAYLOR HUGHES!

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 1:04pm):

Hey righty, don't be coy, you know exactly to whom "illegal immigrants" refers.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 3:45pm):

Who cares. Only you Tree-Hugging, Pot-smoking, Liberal Hippies. That game should be on every campus nation wide.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 4:26pm):

The complaints you hear about with illegal immigration from the right all deal with Mexican immigrants coming from the southern border. When I hear about a complaint about Polish illegal immigrants, for example, I'll start thinking it is a not a racist issue from the right.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 4:42pm):

BS all you want, but you must be of the correct race to be one of the "united" - no gringo anglos allowed.

Anonymous (March 1, 2007 @ 4:46pm):

"...all the graphics show Mexicans walking through a river."

GASP! Could that be caused by the FACT that the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants are from Mexico?

Maybe the USA should just adopt the same procedures that Mexico uses on their southern border?

Not to worry Lefties, Wisconsin is a haven for illegals!

***

In Wisconsin, neither American citizenship nor legal residency in the country is required to get a drivers license or an official state ID. Proof of identity and state residency are required -- but these are really "proof" of nothing. A foreign birth certificate, which a DMV employee may or may not be able to read or check for authenticity may be used to show a person's name and date and place of birth, or a signed credit card may be used as proof of identity. And proof of residency may be verified using a paycheck stub, a state welfare card, or a utility bill. Because Wisconsin has lax standards, it has become a magnet for illegal immigrants. Using Wisconsin documents, ordinary illegal immigrants or international terrorists are able to begin to create identities in this country that cannot be distinguished from native Americans.

Illegal immigration is the latest excuse to display the racism that, unfortunately, continues to be latent in our society. Today it is Mexicans, yesterday it was blacks in the South, before that Irish in New York City or Chinese in California. On and on it goes, playing on our fear that those among us who look or act differently are somehow inferior. The Klu Klux Klan and Adolph Hitler became powerful by promoting these fears. So if you are truly afraid, then go ahead and participate in a "Catch the Illegal Immigrant" hunt - just don't forget your white hooded robe and swastika armband!

Anonymous (March 6, 2007 @ 1:55pm):

Oh come now, everyone is being ridiculous. The game was innapropriate and uncalled for yes, I think we all can admit that. However, it is their right to hold the game and I don't see how it was racist at all. Illegal immigrants (yes I know I am echoing what has been said before) can be of any race. It just so happens that in the US the highest number of illegal immigrants by race, are hispanic. I suppose I should also note that I am female, hispanic, and republican....and while I would not participate in this game - I am not offended by it.

Oh and needless to say, not all republicans are rich white people.
