I am disappointed and frustrated by the Badger Herald's decision to print this past Friday's edition of the "Better Left Unsaid" comic. Though usually offensive and distasteful, Friday's comic crossed the line. I'll repeat the last line for those who weren't able to read it. "As long as he's not white, you're more credible."
This comic is clearly racist and should be treated as any other racist part of your paper would be-eliminated. The fact that this is a comic does not excuse blatant racism. I don't know how the Herald could continue to print such a cruel and offensive aspect of its publication.
We are all a part of a world-renowned university that claims to foster an academic environment accepting to all people, and yet initiatives such as the Chancellor's "Plan 2008" Forum have largely failed to improve the conditions on campus for people of all racial, religious, and sexual groups. This semester, the Education Trust even went as far as to give the UW a "C" for minority access.
This comic points to the root of this problem. It is unacceptable for our student-led newspaper to portray racist attitudes, in any form. We as a student body must recognize and strive to change aspects of our campus community that stand as obstacles for the equality of all.
I'm a student who stands up for change and I call on you, The Badger Herald, to act. Every student deserves to be free from a racist atmosphere. We all must ensure that our university is one of inclusivity and acceptance.

Ben, would be willing to extend that protection to white students, who seem to be targeted more than non-white students? If not, then why should white students care?
Poor white students.
Let’s all get together and give the whtie kids a big hug. You know it’s got to be difficult for them to not make up the entire 100% of the student body. Think about how it must feel to look around and see someone who doesn’t look exactly like you once in a while. Terrible. Then the “PC police” start telling them that they can’t use racial slurs or exclude people based on their appearance. It’s absurd! Finally, as a commenter above pointed out, white students seem to be targeted more than non-whites. Targeted for what? Who knows? But it has to stop!
I know whites don’t suffer any noticable or measurable negative effects from this oppression like say, three times the rate of poverty like blacks. But it hurts white kids feelings when people point out that they’re privileged. And that’s just unfair. No other race has to deal with the guilt over the advantages they recieve just based on their appearance.
It won’t be easy, but I think somehow the historically dominanat overwhelming majority will come out on top. Be brave white students. Things will get better for you, I promise.
I agree with this letter. That comic was pretty bad.
Why is there no reason in debate when race is involved?
I looked back at the cartoon after I read Ben’s article and I really think his complaint is off mark.
As I read it, the cartoon is aimed at the problem of a racial minority not getting the same the same treatment as to the credibility of their testimony. Whether or not this is true, I don’t see how such a comentary is “racist.” The cartoon raises a real problem that some people face in a court of law.
The poster at 11:56 demonstrates further irrationality. When I read comments like those, I really question how much hate that person has for white people.
The poster goes on to say that minorities are being oppressed and this leads to a high poverty rate. I really question the truth of this statement and the causal connection to the high rate of poverty. When do people take responsibility for their circumstances and stop blaming others?
I also would say that whites aren’t receiving “advantages” but minorities are receiving disadvantages. While it is just a change in words, it changes the way we look at the problem. It isn’t the white people are getting special treatment, it is that minorities are being treated unfairly. I don’t think I am advantaged that when I go to a store I am not follwed around by a security guard. Everyone should be able to shop at a store without the assumption that they are going to steal. So in fact, people that are followed are being treated improperly. It isn’t that whites are getting special treatment, it is that all people should get the same treatment that white people get.
“No other race has to deal with the guilt over the advantages they recieve just based on their appearance.”
Does this appearance include only skin color or baggy pants, giant gold chains, and braids?
“Let’s all get together and give the whtie kids a big hug blah-blah-blah”
Uh, OK then, let’s see how you like us when we don’t give a $hit at all about your problem. You wanna be racist yourselves? Fine. You can fight that battle without our help from now on. I’ll just go down to Starbucks and order a frap and kick back and chill. Then I’ll mosey on out to the mall and spend my hard-earned money on some Tommy Hilfiger stuff. And when the weekend comes around, me and my drunken frat buddies will go out and party our guts out, laughing at you poor oppressed souls the whole time.
I’m doin’ alright, gettin’ good grades, my future’s so bright I gotta wear shades!
Whether or not the cartoon is racist, it’s the response to race issues that always amazes me at this school. If anyone makes so much as a peep about something being racist a flood of people jump up to explain that there is no such thing as racism. That white advantage is actually just non-white disadvantage, and there’s nothing that can be done about that. That blacks are treated differently, not because of their skin color, which would be wrong, but rather because of their culture, so it’s okay. That it’s wrong to discriminate against others for being different, so those others should immediately stop being different. That ultimately white people can’t do anything about the incredible advantage they recieve over non-whites, so it would be best not to talk about it at all.
You can rationalize it however you need to, but there is such thing as white privilege in this country, and you don’t have to hate white people to hate the ignorant, insecure chumps working so hard to deny it.
I concur with the 2:11pm post above. I don’t believe Benny actually read any other word in this comic other than “white”. While this comic is pretty much never politically correct, i think this particular strip points out a real problem that we face every day.
If you find reality offensive, perhaps you should stay inside and shut your eyes Ben.
I’m gunna go out and make the best of it.
I know ben personally, and I would just like to point out that he is himself black. The fact that he still finds this comic offensive should tell all his “brothers” that reverse rasism is not right in any form.
