Next Tuesday, voters from 31 Wisconsin cities, villages and towns will have the opportunity to register their opinions of the war in Iraq at the ballot box. Troops Home Now referenda will show up on local ballots in Madison, Monona, Mount Horeb and Baraboo, as well as in cities as far away as Hayward and Sister Bay.
Wisconsin voters should vote 'yes' on the Troops Home Now question for a number of reasons. The war has continued for three years now with no end in sight. Of the 2,324 American soldiers that have been killed, 51 of them are from Wisconsin. Iraqi civilian death estimates range from 33,773 to 37,895. The U.S. Congress will have appropriated $251 billion for the Iraq war by March 31. The human and economic costs of the war so far have been enormous.
In contrast, our gains in Iraq are limited, and the Bush administration's promise of a free, safe country with a democratic government is far from being fully realized. The true War on Terror has fallen to the wayside, as our resources and energy continue to be focused on Iraq. Don't forget that Osama bin Laden still hasn't been captured. And what's equally disappointing is that the Final Report 9/11 Commission Recommendations, released in Dec. 2005, yielded a C minus average and 5 Fs.
Peace activists often feel helpless when it comes to the war in Iraq. Up until this year, most of Congress stood strongly behind President Bush and his decision to continue the occupation of the country, despite the mounting violence and death count. As the occupation continues with no end in sight, however, members of Congress are starting to soften their stances. They're listening more to their constituents who are asking how much longer the war will go on. Troops Home Now referenda in Wisconsin and across the country are the perfect tool for peace activists to use to send a strong message to members of Congress that they aren't happy with the way things are going.
A 'yes' vote on Madison's Troops Home Now referendum will carry no legal weight, but it will send a clear message to policymakers who have the power to affect the course of the war in Iraq. Madison residents are lucky to be represented by two particularly outspoken critics of the war, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and Sen. Russ Feingold. Our vote affirming our support for Troops Home Now will send them the message to stay their course in advocating for a definitive timeline for the war. In some other parts of the state, a 'yes' vote will send a message to representatives that their constituents want Congress to act to bring an end into sight.
Your vote on this issue is symbolic, but contributing to the impact of 31 Wisconsin cities, villages and towns around the state voting 'yes' to Troops Home Now is what we stand to gain. Vote 'yes' to Troops Home Now April 4.

Maybe Madison should also have a referendum that says "Should we impeach Bush? Yes or No" or "Should the US give each of us $5? Yes or No" or "Should Madison be the new capital of the country? Yes or No."
If Madison passes this referendum, I personally nominate you to deliver the news to our troops overseas. I'm sure they'll thank you for your "support."
Oh, and you think that this referendum will send a message to Congress? Would more than three representatives will vote for it this time...
Maybe you should start taking a message from Congress, the one that says Cut and Run is the worst option.
Bring the troops home from Germany, Japan and Korea!
The Nazis were killing US troops in Germany for years after the surrender, but we didn't give up and they have a democratically elected government now. We also did not insist that Germany form a new government as fast as we seem to demand in Iraq, strange since Germany actually had some tradition of elections.
A vote of "yes" is the vote of a traitor and an enemy of freedom. A vote of "yes" means you want to abondon the Iraqi people and hand a victory to terrorists. Nobody wants the troops there, but the Bush Administration realizes that the only way to bring democracy to that part of the world is to fight tryanny and terrorism.
There were times during the Second World War when there appeared to be no end, and the Nazi's victory seemed assured. But luckily we had a president with the courage to make the right decision.
Just because things look bad now does not mean we should give up. There is no other choice. Will the world be better off by letting Iraq fall apart in a civil war, or will it be better off if we continue to fight the terrorists there?
How do you expect to end terrorism (i.e. fundamentalist Islam)? You hippies think smoking pot and listening to punk music is going to change the world? Why are people protesting Bush, but nobody is protesting terror? It's because protesting doesn't solve problems. Bush realizes that you have to fight fire with fire.
How do you traitors (hippies, power hungry democrats, liberals) propose to solve the problem? Seriously, I have never heard any better idea. Let's say you were in charge, what would you do? Let Sadam stay in power? Let Iran build nuclear weapons? Let the Taliban rule Afghanistan? You hippies don't live in the real world. You are traitors to this country.
"smoking pot and listening to punk music"
There will be none of that once sharia is the law of the land!
You should make sure you know the definition of words you are using in your article.
A civilian is someone who is not a member of the military or police. Therefore there haven't been 33,773 to 37,895 civilian deaths. There have been that many Iraqis killed, but many of those deaths you are counting are members of the army that were killed.
Yeah, let's pull out right now so the Arab World's vision of us as a "paper tiger" will be confirmed yet again.
The terrorists know that as long as they have people like Liz here in America espousing the "it's a complete disaster, we must cut and run" scenario, they have a chance.
"How do you traitors (hippies, power hungry democrats, liberals) propose to solve the problem?"
Clueless,
Umm Bush created this problem his damn self. You act like America wanted this war. Afghanistan we wanted, Iraq...not so much.
The enemies of the USA are absolutely comforted by the idea that they just have to outlast Bush. The war in Iraq can only be lost in the streets of Madison, not in the streets of Bagdad.
They're waiting for the 'The Last Helicopter'.

Hassan Abbasi has a dream--a helicopter doing an arabesque in cloudy skies to avoid being shot at from the ground. On board are the last of the "fleeing Americans," forced out of the Dar al-Islam (The Abode of Islam) by "the Army of Muhammad."
I could care less about the opinion of the average peace activist hippie, not because opinions are of no value but because the opinion of hippies are built on a lies or a gross naivete of the world they live in. Example one, "We went to war with Iraq over WMD." No matter how many times you ask a hippie to read the war resolution passed by congress the next day the are back to talking about Bush lied about WMD's. Example two They actually believe that Fidel Castro is a great guy because of the literacy rate and free health care in Cuba.
If only the Dead Milkmens song had come true and the thing that only eats hippies had been born in 1966.
