After weeks of debate, students won a victory Thursday when Mayor Dave Cieslewicz announced the date of Mifflin Street Block Party is officially April 30.

This year’s block party was nearly a go for two separate weekends with students inevitably set to celebrate April 30 and then again on the “almost official” date of May 7. However, now that the earlier date has been set, preserving the University of Wisconsin study day, students must respect the police presence and refrain from partying May 7.

In recent years, Mifflin has been a relatively peaceful celebration among the thousands that congregate and the police that attempt to regulate the situation. Police have rarely cracked down on those partying responsibly and students have typically been respectful. Despite threats of increased intolerance on the part of the police and hostility from students, we urge both sides to approach this block party as they have in the past. This is necessary to preserve the integrity of the celebration for future years.

City officials and students should also work together in the future to ensure such a mishap does not occur. Academic calendars are released years in advance, making the quick date check simple.

Regardless, a certain amount of praise must be directed toward the campus leaders and select city officials, namely Ald. Mike Verveer, Dist. 4, who lobbied for the earlier date putting studies in mind. Congratulations students for taking a stand and sticking to it. Now, let’s party.

"necessary to preserve the integrity of the celebration for future years"

Here is a thought, why not preserve the integrity of the event and have it on the day it is supposed to be held on and has been for as long as anyone can remember. The first Saturday in May.

If only we would put so much uproar and effort into issues that actually matter.

Funny how the editorial leaves out the fact that ASM was primarily responsible for the date change . . . but that would mean the Herald would be praising ASM on TWO separate occasions this year, and we can't have that, can we?

Anonymous (April 26, 2005 @ 8:54am):

This process was a joke. Since when did students have to get together with the administration and the mayor to coordinate when the party would be held? In the past, students declared when the party was (first weekend in May) and had it. Period. No discussion. No negotiation.

Maybe ASM can serve lemondade on each corner.

...and by the way, Study Day is for suckers.

Anonymous (April 26, 2005 @ 10:16am):

Students don't have to work with the administration as to when the party is. They have to work with the city. And the question is not, "When will the students have a party?" as they can have one whenever they want to. The question is, "When will the city and the police be cooperative?" In case you didn't notice, a lot of minor illegal activity happens at Mifflin, and the cops could bust up the party whenever they want to. Getting the city's official ok on the April 30th date means that we can all go party like always, and not worry about being arrested or tear gassed.

"and not worry about being arrested or tear gassed."

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. And by that, I mean you better hold your breath.

Anonymous (April 26, 2005 @ 11:26am):

Fuck the police. Fuck the city.

Anonymous (April 26, 2005 @ 11:56am):

"Fuck the police. Fuck the city."

And especially fuck the students.

my god you kids are bitches nowadays. the most disgusting thing about the city caving on this issue is not the extra money that having the party on 4/30 will cost, its the extra money that having two parties will cost. unless, that is, anyone with an ounce of common sense thinks that there won't be an assload of college kids getting drunk on the real mifflin st party date.

Anonymous (April 26, 2005 @ 1:28pm):

My favorite part of last years Mifflin party was all the plastic handcuffs. I took a 20 minute walk through the party and saw so many baggies of doobie and flasks on the ground next to the feet of bewildered party goers. How do you dumbells get caught with your doobie? Are you smoking it in front of cops? However, college kids getting drunk is part of being a college kid and it should continue. Also, don't eff the police. You need them and the majority of them would literally take a bullet for you. Lose the angst Junior.

"After weeks of debate, students won a victory Thursday..." with absolutely no help from the chicken-shit Badger Herald, which refused to take a stand. Swine!!!

Anonymous (April 26, 2005 @ 5:03pm):

This whole thing would have been avoided if UW stopped being the only University I've ever heard of that gives exams on Sundays. Why hasn't anyone mentioned this????

Anonymous (April 27, 2005 @ 12:09am):

If the UW wouldn't have started second semeseter so damn early it would have all been avoided. I think it's ridiculous I'm fucking done with school on May 6th. Fuck you UW.
