During Thanksgiving weekend I went into a used bookstore in Tucson. I went to the counter to buy a book, and while I was paying the salesperson put the book in a plastic bag. Considering that a bag for just one book is wasteful, I gave him my standard answer, “No, thanks. I’m trying to stop American dependence on foreign oil. Save a plastic tree.” The salesperson replied, “Well, one plastic bag won’t make a difference.”
Won’t make a difference? I was shocked.
Having traveled abroad in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, I have seen the effects of abusing our environment. When I was in Macedonia, I saw cars and abandoned refrigerators leaking Freon thrown into steams. A half kilometer downriver, there were children swimming in the stream. In Iraq, the stifling summer air would trap all of the fumes from the cars. A permanent brownish-grey cloud hung over Mosul, and breathing was difficult. When the rains finally began in October, rain covered everything outside with a half of a centimeter of filth because of these fumes.
After returning from the other side of the pond, I noticed that American society does not treat our environment much better. We are an incredibly wasteful society. We think nothing about throwing away half of a burrito from Taco Bell if we are no longer hungry. We will take incredibly long showers because we do not have to worry about a shortage of potable water. We will crank up the heat in the winter because of the harsh cold.
We waste an enormous amount of natural resources in the United States. As a result, we have some serious consequences. One of the consequences is the fact that we are increasingly dependent on foreign oil, and a large share of that foreign oil is in unstable regions such as Nigeria, Central Asia and the Middle East. We may have contributed to the instability, but in reality, we need to become less dependent on these foreign natural resources and do our part for the environment.
That is why I was shocked when I went into the bookstore. Does one plastic bag save the world? Of course not, but the position of at least trying to do something to make a difference is what matters. While I am not the prototypical environmental activist (and admittedly, long showers are a guilty pleasure of mine), we can become more cognizant of how wasteful we are.
I have noticed how wasteful I myself am. Last winter, I noticed how much I drive. Besides taking the bus to class, I would drive everywhere. Now, I try to drive less by walking or taking the bus. After going to Woodman’s for groceries, I realized that I had twenty plastic bags lying around. Now I try to not have my groceries double bagged and use the bags I do get as garbage bags. I cannot stand cold weather, and I like to have the heat set at 70 degrees. With the increase in heating prices, I have kept the heat turned down to 67.
Do these small things I do make a difference? I do not know, but if more of us used these measures, maybe we could help the environment and stop our dependence on foreign oil in our own small way. The futile attitude of the salesperson at the bookstore is most definitely not making a difference.
One bag may not make a difference, but a bag every other day totals 182 bags per year. Others may notice and begin to save as well. Changing our attitude towards the environment is necessary before the United States truly has a gas crunch because all of our American natural resources are gone.
I have lived in places where the environment has been nearly destroyed. Our environment truly is precious. While I do not think that the United States can change overnight, we can begin to change the little things in our daily lives to make a change in all of our lives and our environment. Yes, we can make a difference.
Now maybe I should think about taking shorter showers …

Thank you Jimmy Carter, where is your sweater?
Making an effort to be more conservation-oriented will not only help the environment, but it'll save you a little money, too. FYI-if you bring your grocery bags the next time you go shopping, they'll give you money back for re-using them.
Jeff, it sounds like the problem is worse elsewhere. Why don't you go elsewhere and bitch about it? We're sick and tired of whiny liberal assholes like you.
Tired of acid rain? Go to Canada and bitch at them about it. Tired of whales being hunted to the point of near-extinction? Go piss off at Norway and Japan. There really aren't many environmental crises in this world that we Americans are involved in anymore. And if doing our part won't get you to stop harrassing us about it, then why should we even bother. Another thing, how much pollution do you think is caused by setting SUVs on fire, pal? Think you're not violating emission standards by torching one? Go get in someone else's face for a while...a really long while!
"There really aren't any environmental crises in this world that we Americans are involved in anymore"
Americans are the top-consumers of the world. For the above quote, I hope you develop asthma from the ever-increasing levels of air pollution from driving your gas-guzzling SUV, I hope you develop cancer from drinking groundwater polluted by radium, and I hope your children are born with birth defects from bio-magnificated PCB's and methylmercury transferred from fish in most all of Wisconsin's surface waters and the Great Lakes. So the problem's not in America, huh? Guess again. These health risks are real, and Jeff makes a good point in saying that every person should do their part, even if it's as small as not using a bag if you don't need one...
Bring old bags back to the grocery store? lol Shall we bring out own boxes and milk cartons too?
Are you really that lazy you can't reuse grocery bags?
That's pitiful.
You forgot to mention that plastic bags can be recycled. A lot of stores have bins just inside their entrace door for you to deposit your used plastic bags.
Also I'm surprised you get your groceries in a plastic bag. I thought for sure you were a paper bag kind of guy, but apparently it's more important to save a real tree than a paper tree.
Oops meant plastic tree, not paper tree
Yes I am that Lazy. I don't recycle either! Oh Lord send in the PC police! I drive 4 blocks to my friends' house in the winter! I am everything you hate! lol
I don't take long showers though, but next time I think of you I will leave the water running all afternoon.
"I hope you develop asthma from the ever-increasing levels of air pollution from driving your gas-guzzling SUV..."
I don't drive an SUV, idiot. I don't drive at all because the cost of owning a motor vehicle is impossible on my lowly income. From all the other things you said in your post, you are obviously an asshole liberal who wishes the worst on everyone else. You hope someone else's kids grow up deformed? Man, or woman or whatever, are you sick or what?! My kids will grow up in a healthy environment, not the doomsday one you described. It's jerks like you who give Madison a bad reputation.
The things you said clearly indicate that liberals are losers. they take a worthy cause and beat others over the head with it until no one at all cares. And why should they after some moron just got done screaming in their ear at the top of his/her lungs? You stupid liberals are so self-righteous. You think that you're the only ones who care about anything, the only ones who know what it's all about. The only worthwhile point losers like you have ever succeeded in getting across is that you are total idiots who need to be locked up.
Consider this: not a single tree was harmed by writing this post. How many trees were cut down to make all those protest signs you like to foist up in other people's faces? I would really like to hear your explanation for that!
"...and I hope your children are born with birth defects from bio-magnificated PCB's and methylmercury..."
Wow, a liberal who knows where all the pollutants in our environment are coming from! I'm beginning to wonder if liberals themselves are the ones who are doing all the polluting. Maybe in the middle of the night, they sneak out with a barrel of Dark Eco and dump it a lake. They're probably feminists, which explains why all those frogs are turning into hermaphrodites. How kinky!
The more I read shit like the post that the above quote comes from, the more I just want to beat the shit out of a liberal. What a bunch of crybabies.
I drive an SUV and it gets better gas mileage and meets higher emissions standards than most regular passenger vehicles. Four-wheel drive means I don't get stuck in the snow, so I can just whiz right by all you tree-huggers in your compacts, who are stuck in the snow, waiting for one of us to stop and help pull you out. Then again, maybe we won't stop.
What's up with all the liberal bashing? Last time I checked, a lot of republican conservatives enjoy hunting, fishing, and the environment just like a lot of liberals do. (Bush and Cheney also enjoy hunting on their private ranches) So I don't get how the last two posters construed liberal craziness out of this article. Conservatives...conservation...conserving resources?
I also buy triple ply toilet paper.
yeah, because you're so full of crap
You can use that scratchy stuff
Okay liberal. I can see you are fighting a very important issue in the world today. Maybe you could use the plastic bag for a hat to protect your head from snow flakes while you protest the war on the street corner!
Okay liberal. I can see you are fighting a very important issue in the world today. Maybe you could use the plastic bag for a hat to protect your head from snow flakes while you protest the war on the street corner!
Then the liberal might suffocate lol
"Then the liberal might suffocate"
Now THAT'S a step in the right direction, especially if they hope other people's kids die from pollution, as if that were the only cause.
"What's up with all the liberal bashing?"
Well, there are good reasons for it and those who can do! Liberals have been the "cool people" in this town long enough. It's someone else's turn now.
The title of the piece is "Do your part: stop waste".
Yeah, stop wasting my time on liberal causes. I'm gonna worry about me for awhile. I haven't done that in so long.
Hi author, it's me (wasteful guy) here again. I want you to know that I just ate dinner and I took too much spaghetti so I threw most of it away.
I also had a cup of coffee earlier today (no, not that nasty fair trade shit). I buy a 3-exploited nations french roast from Caribou. It is most excellent.
I shall now retire to watch football and drink beer.
P.S. I left all my lights on for you.
I also leave the water running when I brush my teeth...just because I can.
Here's another thought for all you bleeding-heart liberals:
Worried about the environment? Blame it on liberal immigration policies and liberal building codes. That's right. If the local population increases and you don't want high-rises, then builders have to go out instead of up. It's the only way to accomodate the growing population in our nation's cities, which is where most immigrants wind up. This, of course, will lead to a greater need for public services, including garbage removal, which in turn will fill up our landfills at a faster rate.
Instead of forcing these destructive policies down our throats, why don't you join the Army and help force out all the wacko dictators that these immigrants are fleeing so they can stay home? The USA does not have to be the only country worth living in, you know. If you can't handle that, then the only option is to live in squalor. This country is just getting too damn crowded.
Well, the blind conservatives are out in force.
Okay, "patriots." Pay attention, and try, if you can, to be rational.
First of all, it's one world, and whether people are here or there, there are too damn many of them. Let's keep those repressive policies coming, keep encouraging people to have unwanted children ALL OVER THE WORLD.
And let's keep wasting every resource -- especially here in the glorious US of A, and God will no doubt intervene and keep the world from becoming an enormous cesspool.
I try to sympathize with various points of view, but when some people are so incredibly arrogant and short-sighted, I can only point out their stupidity in the hope that others may learn -- since those in question do not seem prone to learning.
Live in your isolated little consumerist bubble, and, when the oil runs out, we of the "bleeding-heart liberal" camp will try to fight back the urge to say "we told you so."
(By the way -- nice use of cliche!)
It's so cool to be conservative nowadays! And it's convenient, because you don't need to be bothered with such hassles as thinking! Or observing scientific data! Or living in the real world!
Thanks you, Bush-lovers, for helping to ruin the world. The sooner it goes to shit, the sooner you might begin to accept the possibility that maybe you've been wrong all along.
If the rich in this country have it good now, so much the worse for them when conveniences like an ozone layer become unavailable. Sorry, you can't buy a new one!
Think, damn you, think!
-Adam Arnold
Are you "Loud and Proud" too Arnold?
Adam Arnold, you are so full of crap! It's liberals and their policies that encourage third-world countries to overpopulate. Set up a planned parenthood in Southeast Asia or Africa and they just kept on screwing. Then they turn to us to help to feed their starving masses that they knew damn well they didn't have enough food for. So they scream at us to send food over there. They think it's okay because we Americans-excuse me, we capitalist pig warmongers-will come riding over the hill to save the day. And we have people in THIS country starving to death.
If this country sucks so much then why are they flocking here? They are always at war with each other regardless of our best efforts to help them. Their economies go belly-up, then they yell at us to bail them out. Sorry, but we have worn out our responsibility as the peacemakers, police department, food pantry and savings and loan of the world. Maybe we should just take their advice and stay out of their business. If the rest of the world is so much older and wiser than us, then why can't they take care of themselves? I think it's about time we just said "F*** you, we're through!"
If all you asshole liberals care so much about them then move overseas, where you can be with the people you truly care about. I'm a college student. I don't have the time or money to give to every single one of your causes, and I sure as hell don't need you up in my face about it. Keep it up and I'll just reach into my purse for my pepper spray and empty the whole can in your damn face. See how YOU like being abused for once.
Hey Adam, ever stop to think about the pollution eco-terrorists create when they torch SUVs or newly-built houses in new neighborhood developments? Ever wonder where all that acid rain in the northeast comes from? Can you say "Quebec"? And those morons are NOT conservatives, they're liberals! A fine example they're setting for the rest of us, eh?
I hope the pepper spray isn't in an aerosol can...lord knows that would ruin his day more than the burning eyes.
You people need to learn the difference between "liberals" "eco-terrorists" and "environmentalists". Not every person who advocates for the environment is a liberal. Not every liberal is an eco-terrorist. Etc, etc. So stop generalizing because your shallow-mindedness and cheap insults are realling pissing me off!
P.S. If you want to waste food, TP, water, electricity, go ahead. Because that's stuff you actually have to pay for, and you'll just end up as an even more broke college student in the end. But, hey, your money, your choice.
"You people need to learn the difference between "liberals" "eco-terrorists" and "environmentalists"."
When it comes to Madison liberals, there is no difference.
"So stop generalizing because your shallow-mindedness and cheap insults are realling pissing me off!"
"Really", not "realling". You liberal assholes are always pissed off! Turnabout is fair play.
Do you think that technology will ever advance to the point of having four-ply toilet paper? We can get four blades on a razor; you'd think we'd be able to get four plys on TP.
I look forward to the days of Four-ply. I think we may have to return to the 15 gallons-per-flush toilet to handle the loads.
P.S. I run my AC in the winter...the noise helps me sleep; yet it gets cold so I must crank up the heat and my 3 electric blankets.
P.P.S. I just got back from STARBUCKS where I specifically asked for non-fair trade coffee.
My car is still running from last night...nothing worse than a cold car.
"Set up a planned parenthood in Southeast Asia or Africa and they just kept on screwing."
I hate to break it to you, but you're not going to stop people from having sex. What you can do is educate them and provide them with a way to prevent conception when they do have sex.
"I hate to break it to you, but you're not going to stop people from having sex. What you can do is educate them and provide them with a way to prevent conception when they do have sex."
Fine. Go ahead and screw your brains out. Just don't come crying to us because we won't send money to help feed your bloated population. Go ahead and overpopulate. Like we're gonna care. That's all we've been doing, and you still can't keep your peckers in your pants! Yeah I know, we're pretty horny over here too. But hey, our population comes first. Sorry, you'll have to wait.
"I hate to break it to you, but you're not going to stop people from having sex. What you can do is educate them and provide them with a way to prevent conception when they do have sex."
Yeah, we keep on educating them and they still keep on fucking. Don't they know how babies are made? Why don't you educate them on what it takes to support a family? Explain to them the burden they'll place on their own country if they can't afford to raise their kids by themselves. Explain to them how fed up the developed world is with liberal assholes twisting their arms to get them to pay child support out of their own pockets because someone halfway around the world decided to have kids they couldn't afford.
Look, we're already paying to support the kids of poor people here at home for the same reasons. Their parents are too stupid to know what they're getting themselves into when they start a family that they don't have the means to support. Most of these shitheads have kids just so they can collect welfare anyway. And all that time they just laugh their butts off at working people because they know nothing will done about it. Everything from job training to taxpayer-supported sterilization has been tried, but the babies keep on coming. I'm already facing the challenge of paying off student loans after I graduate. Why should I be expected to pay for someone else's free ride?
So... providing contraception and family planning makes MORE children? There's one of those "conservative" notions that my tiny "liberal" mind can't wrap itself around.
If anyone else wants to respond angrily to any of my comments, try to think first about who benefits from the policies you endorse. In the short term, it's usually rich, white people. In the long term, absolutely no one. Maybe cockroaches.
Please, respond with more of your thought-provoking insights. I have a sense of humor. And, like "conservatives," I occasionally need to feel better about myself by looking down on other people. Unfortunately, I also have the capacity for pity, which, after having a good laugh, makes me feel terrible for those of you who clearly don't know better.
So sad, so sad.
Incidentally, the connections you attempt to draw between low income and "stupidity" are nauseating, and show an utter lack of understanding of the idea of causality.
-Adam Arnold
Oh, by the way. I don't think I ever suggested violence as a part of any solution. Putting words in my mouth doesn't make your arguments seem any more reasonable. And though it's inane to assume I approve of pollution if it comes from Canada, the US rust belt is to thank for its share of pollution. Neither situation is a good one, and I still don't see how your comment adds anything to the debate.
-Adam Arnold
"If anyone else wants to respond angrily to any of my comments, try to think first about who benefits from the policies you endorse. In the short term, it's usually rich, white people."
Rich white people? Excuse me, but the countries referred are run by rich nonwhites. Rich white people ANYWHERE could not possibly reap any benefit from poor people in underdeveloped countires having babies they can't afford to raise on their own. Blame the rich nonwhite leaders in those countries for the havoc. They are the ones running the show there, the ones who live high on the hog while the rest of the country suffers.
You sound like a typical liberal, blaming the whole world for everything. Tell me something: when do you expect to graduate? Better yet, what is your major? Philosophy? The more you make an idiot of yourself, the less people will listen to you.
Adam Adam, up an' at 'em! ha-ha-ha-haha!
Aw, a little incidental humor never hurt anyone.
"Their parents are too stupid to know what they're getting themselves into when they start a family that they don't have the means to support. Most of these shitheads have kids just so they can collect welfare anyway."
Wow. Someone's angry. If the parents are "too stupid" why do you think that is? Perhaps because they haven't received an adequate education and neither did their parents? Furthermore, do you think poor people are having any more sex than people of other social economic strata? Hardly. People of upper economic status have the means to obtain contraception or to have an abortion much more often than those who are poor.
And your point that poor people are having kids just to get welfare benefits is just plain ignorance. You've bought into the "welfare queen" symbol put out there by Reagan and other conservatives in the 80s to justify cutting of social welfare programs. If you blame the poor for being poor, you relieve the govt of any responsibility. Is it someone's fault to be born into a community where they will recieve a substandard education and where there are no jobs? I know here in America we have the idea that "anyone can get ahead if they work hard enough", but this isn't always the case. And those welfare benefits you speak of are hardly enough to justify having kids for.
"People of upper economic status have the means to obtain contraception or to have an abortion much more often than those who are poor."
Yeah right, so tell me why poor people still fuck like crazy when they know damn well they don't have access to contraceptives. It's because they need to have kids to qualify for welfare. If you are single and poor, you get practically nothing. If you have kids, then they rool out the red carpet, just for the sake of your kids. Try and refute that, Mr. know-it-all liberal.
I don't really understand your idea here that poor people are having all this sex while they're unable to support a family. Do you honestly believe that the poor are having more sex that middle or upper class people? And you've got to know about contraceptives and that they work to know that you should have them. There are plenty of people who don't get that education. And, as much as it would solve a lot of problems, we're never going to stop people who can't support a family from having sex.
Finally, I'm really disturbed that you find it so appalling that people with kids get more welfare than those without kids. Regardless of what you think of the parents, is it really fair to deny their children health care, food, or a place to live?
Is it really fair to make everyone carry the burden of an over-procreative, degenerated few?
Is there a self-described conservative out there above the age of twelve who would like to make a comment? Is there someone with any capacity to see anything beyond his or her tiny, misinformed little sphere of the supremacy of wealth?
Come the Revolution...
"And, as much as it would solve a lot of problems, we're never going to stop people who can't support a family from having sex."
Fine. Let's sterilize the fuck-crazy bastards. They can still fuck their brains out and they won't produce and kids for the rest of us to support. Sound fair enough?
"Blaming the whole world for everything."
What does that mean? Please, please make a cogent argument. There's enough blame for everybody, but maybe a little more for slef-centered, blind, oblivious morons for whom money is the only thing that has meaning.
"There's enough blame for everybody, but maybe a little more for slef-centered, blind, oblivious morons for whom money is the only thing that has meaning."
OK, so if I win a cool million playing the lottery, does that mean I share the blame for all the poor people's problems?
"When I was in Macedonia, I saw cars and abandoned refrigerators leaking Freon thrown into steams. A half kilometer downriver, there were children swimming in the stream."
And all these candy-ass liberals who post here claim that rich white people are to blame for all the environmental problems that exist in those countries? I don't think so.
