Every four years, the summer Olympics serve as a time to celebrate our athletes and their prowess in their chosen field of competition. Nations from around the world send their best to compete and bring their country the prestige that accompanies an Olympic medal. As the first female swimmer from the University of Wisconsin to compete in the Olympics, Carly Piper had already accomplished much. But, having won the gold in the 800-meter freestyle and simultaneously breaking the world-record, Carly has shown that she ranks among the best of what the United States has to offer.
Along with Coach Erik Hansen, the Badger swim team has much to give them pride. Carly’s great victory stands as a symbol of what we all one day hope to achieve: excellence in our field and renown for our endeavors. It is through examples like Carly’s that we all can find the courage to go beyond the pale of what was previously thought possible and set the bar for those who follow. This board would like to extend our congratulations to both Carly Piper for her gold medal and to Coach Erik Hansen for his leadership of the UW swimming team that undeniably helped Carly on her way. Great job Carly, and good luck in October’s upcoming World Championships in Indianapolis!
