As students seeking solid student representation in city government, we feel Jason Stephany is the choice for the District 5 seat.
First and foremost, Stephany is a traditional undergrad, of which there are currently none on council, and we feel this lack of student representation is inconsistent in a city where nearly 20 percent of the population studies full- or part-time.
Stephany’s opponent, Robbie Webber, bills her platform almost exclusively on bringing alternative forms of transportation to Madison. While more bike paths are an important aspect of Madison’s future, a majority of Stephany’s constituents are concerned largely with the present issues facing council.
When it comes to the much-discussed drink-special debate, Stephany brings up a number of strong arguments in defense of drink specials. First, he has vowed to fight any attempted regulation on drink specials in downtown Madison. Stephany cites the lack of data proving the current drink-special law has led to a reduction in crimes that the university and UW police claim are created by drink specials as evidence of the law’s being unsuccessful.
This is promising in a council candidate. Students should not forfeit the opportunity to put their voice at the forefront of city politics. Vote Jason Stephany for District 5.
