We try to mind our own business as much as possible, but we can’t help but speculate about the whereabouts of our cross-campus rival on today’s newsstands. With little adieu, the Cardinal quietly ceased publication Friday.
Since its inception in 1969, the Herald has periodically served as students’ only campus news source, most notably in the 1990s before student government bought — er, loaned money to — the other campus newspaper.
Today, the monopoly apparently returns, with the Herald once again outlasting the competition. In retrospect, today’s turn of events seemed preordained; this semester’s non-savvy ASM just hasn’t been cranking out the press releases — er, “news” content — like they used to.
All semester, we’ve been more than generous with our advice, and we won’t be stingy now: A more economical alternative may be the establishment of a weekly. In any case, it’s something to think about …
