It amazes me that anyone, let alone Lyall, can get a 43 percent raise, especially when the economy is in a recession. But what amazes me even more is that the student radicals, who jump at any opportunity to stage a protest, haven’t done anything about this. Why haven’t they staged a sit-in in Lyall’s office yet? Where’s the protest at Library Mall? Come on, you guys — this directly involves you this time.

Governor McCallum deserves better

What a joke. Jim Doyle, the state’s illustrious attorney general and gubernatorial wanna-be, has nothing better to do than criticize our sitting governor, Scott McCallum, for a picture on his website.

Governor McCallum is dealing with decreasing revenues and a budget shortfall, while Doyle is looking at McCallum’s campaign website with a microscope. Governor McCallum is meeting with leaders from the legislature, business community and labor unions to discuss the future of our state, while Doyle is conjuring up new verses of “On Wisconsin.” Governor McCallum is leading our state, while Doyle is mocking it.

In less than one year we will select the governor who will lead us for at least four years to come. This leader will be required to deal with a declining economy and a shortfall of state revenue. This leader will have to deal with a burdensome tax levy in our state. This leader will need to address growing education expenses and the increasing taxes associated with our state’s schools.

Governor McCallum has already dealt successfully with these issues. The state budget the governor signed into law included the lowest spending in a long time — a refreshing break from increasing spending on frivolous state projects.

Governor McCallum has remained steadfast in his pledge against raising taxes in our state, where we are already among the highest taxed states in the nation. Governor McCallum has begun to rework the state’s education finance system and has said he expects results.

Governor McCallum has shown real leadership in his nine months as governor of our great state. Doyle has shown a penchant for political bickering and dirty politics. Governor McCallum deserves a sign of support and your vote in November 2002.

Humanities right on track

I am totally in agreement with everything that you wrote in your article, “In defense of humanities.” Having been around many people who are science majors (mostly for pre-med), I receive contempt for being in history/political science courses. I usually take the criticism with a grain of salt.

However, your defense of the humanities has awakened the idea that we are no less important than those who are taking science classes. For the first time in quite a while, I have felt really good about not being in a science-related major. Why should I have to think less of myself for not being able to do a reaction chain for a molecule?

Maybe being in the humanities won’t make me “smart” in the eyes of the science majors; but, knowing that there are other humanities majors out there, I think that we should remind the science majors that it is going to be the businessmen, teachers, and blue-collar workers who are going to move and mold the minds and economy of this nation; it is going to be those same businessmen, teachers, and blue-collar workers who are going to pay the wages of those science majors; and it is going to be those same businessmen, teachers, and blue-collar workers who are going to do a majority of the living and dying during these times.

Thank you for the pride.
