Division of International Studies vice provost and dean finalists include two Badgers

Two University of Wisconsin faculty members and one University of Iowa professor are the finalists for the vice provost and dean of the Division of International Studies.

The finalists were selected by a 12-member board and include Guido Podestá and Bradford Barham from UW and Downing Thomas of the University of Iowa, according to a statement. Podestá has been serving as the interim vice provost and dean since June 2012.

According to the statement, Podestá previously served as associate dean of international studies and liaison to the International Institute and was a professor and former chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Additionally, he served as director of UW’s Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies department.

Barham is a professor and former chair in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at UW. His work has focused on issues of poverty, trade, migration and education outcomes in Latin America, sustainable agriculture and environmental issues. Barham also currently directs Educational Innovation for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Thomas is currently the associate provost and dean of international programs at the University of Iowa and is a professor in the Department of French and Italian, the statement said. He has previously served as associate dean for international programs, director of the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights and chair of his department.

All finalists will give public presentations on campus on April 21, May 1 and May 7.
